8 companies ranked from 648 reviews read, checked October 2026

Samui Cars Group scores 8.9 of 10, Drive 8.1, ASAP 7.8. 648 reviews read across 8 car rental companies: deposits, insurance, damage claims, prices.

The best-rated car rental company on Koh Samui is Samui Cars Group (8.9 out of 10), a delivery company that brings the car to your hotel for a cash deposit of 5,000-6,000 THB (~143-171 USD). Drive Car Rental (8.1) is the best airport desk and sells zero-excess cover, and ASAP Car Rentals (7.8) has the newest cars on a 6,000 THB card hold. The five international and national brands at the airport score 5.7-6.8, mostly on thinner evidence.

We read 648 renter reviews across 8 companies, from Google, Trip.com, Qeeq, DiscoverCars and a Tripadvisor forum thread, checked October 2026. Scores come from what reviews report, not from rentals by us. For how to rent, which licence and what a day costs, see the car rental guide; this page ranks the companies.

Key takeaways

  • Top 3: Samui Cars Group 8.9 (hotel delivery, no card needed), Drive Car Rental 8.1 (airport desk, zero excess), ASAP Car Rentals 7.8 (new cars, card only).
  • Island median is 850-1,050 THB a day for an economy car, 1,100-1,400 THB for a compact and 1,500-2,200 THB for an SUV. Airport brands advertise 700-950 THB, but the cheap rate does not mean a good deal: Sixt is cheapest and scores 6.5.
  • Deposits split in two: cash 5,000-6,000 THB with the local company, or a card hold of 6,000-8,000 THB at the airport. No company in the sample was reported holding a passport.
  • Even “full cover” in these reviews excludes lost keys and plates. Four of the eight companies are small-sample (under 80 reviews read).

How Did We Rate the Car Rental Companies?

Each company gets 10 category scores from 0 to 10: vehicle condition, price against the island median, quoted price versus paid price, deposit terms, insurance and excess, damage-claim fairness, delivery and pickup, staff and English, breakdown help, and booking ease. The overall is a weighted mean, with price and damage claims weighted highest (1.2 each) and booking ease lowest (0.4). Full anchors are in the score tables below each company.

We read Google reviews of each company’s Samui listing one by one, then added Tripadvisor forum threads, Qeeq, Trip.com and DiscoverCars reviews where the company has them. Counts such as “22 of 186 reviews” mean reviews we read, not the platform total. A complaint the company answered and fixed weighs half. Company claims from a website count only when renters or a third party confirm them.

Companies with fewer than 80 reviews read (Europcar, Sixt, Hertz and Budget) carry a small-sample label, and their scores are indicative. Where a category has no evidence, it sits at 6.0 and the note says “little data”. No company paid to be listed and nobody gave us a free rental: this site is non-commercial and earns nothing from any of them. Thrifty Koh Samui was left out because its reviews were mostly jokes.

Samui Cars Group

Samui Cars Group is the island’s top-rated car company at 8.9, and the only one that delivers to hotels, villas, the airport and the piers as the core service. Of 186 reviews read, 60 praise the delivery and pickup, 100 praise the staff (two named people come up in dozens), and 22 mention the deposit being returned on the spot. Fleet is mostly 2022-2024 Yaris Ativ, Vios, Jazz, Corolla Cross and Fortuner.

The deposit is cash, 5,000-6,000 THB, with no passport and no card. Quotes are fixed on WhatsApp and the daily rate runs 850-1,000 THB with insurance included, level with the median. Nine renters report help within the hour for a flat tyre, a dead battery, an accident or a scratch. The watch-outs: no instant online booking, no card option, three reports of mechanical faults, and one June 2025 renter reports an engine failing hours into the rental and a damage demand afterwards.

It suits anyone without a credit card, anyone who wants the car at the hotel door, and multi-week renters. It is less suited to people who want to book and pay in a form online, or a car that is new every time.

Drive Car Rental

Drive Car Rental scores 8.1 and is the best-read airport desk, with 157 reviews read from a pool of over 800 across Google, Trip.com and Qeeq. The desk is about 100 metres from the terminal, and reviews describe handover and return taking minutes. Fleet is Nissan Almera, Kicks e-POWER hybrid, Hilux and SUVs, mostly under two years old by renter reports: 30 of 157 reviews praise the cars and one reports an oil light and a leaking tyre.

Three renters call it the only airport company selling zero-excess full cover, and several confirm it. The catch is the deposit, with one renter reporting about 15,000 THB for a lost key or plate even on full cover; a card deposit refunded the same day is also reported. Five renters say staff drove them to the departures gate after return. Rates run 700-900 THB for an economy car, under the median. Reports of a booked four-door swapped for a two-door with no refund (August 2026) and four slow replies are the blemishes.

It suits arrivals who want one desk, zero excess and a newer car. Check the key and plate deposit before you pay for cover.

ASAP Car Rentals

ASAP Car Rentals scores 7.8 on 84 reviews, and ranks first among the airport brands on fleet and service. A Thai chain with a counter a short walk from customs, it shows 38 of 84 reviews praising the cars (mostly new Yaris Ativ, Veloz and hybrids) and 55 praising staff. Fourteen renters say staff waited for a late flight or drove them to departures.

The deposit is a 6,000 THB (~171 USD) card hold returned at drop-off, and cash is not accepted. Rates run 650-950 THB for an economy car, under the median. One renter reports full cover with no deductible included in the price, but a 2025 forum post describes a 3,210 THB charge for a lost plate despite full cover and phones that went unanswered. Breakdown help has almost no data: no breakdowns reported, one forum complaint about unanswered lines.

It suits card holders arriving at the airport who want a new car at a low rate. It does not offer hotel delivery and does not take cash.

Europcar Koh Samui

Europcar Koh Samui scores 6.8 on 28 reviews read, so treat it as indicative. The counter is inside the airport and returns are met outside arrivals via WhatsApp. Sixteen of 28 reviews praise the staff, and a Yaris is quoted about 700-800 THB a day through aggregators, under the median.

The fleet is the weak point: one renter reports a 140,000 km Honda with more than 40 dents and weak brakes, and another a new car. One renter reports a 900 THB refuel service fee, and two older reports mention fuel markups. The full cover explained by one renter excludes only keys and plates, which is the usual pattern, but one renter felt pushed to buy it. The aggregator excess of 9,630-20,000 THB is a company claim and the deposit form was not found.

It suits airport pickups when you have photographed the car in detail.

Sixt Koh Samui

Sixt Koh Samui scores 6.5 on 55 reviews: the cheapest in the sample (700-750 THB for a Yaris) and the weakest on cars. On the cars, 16 mentions are negative (dented, dirty or worn) and 8 positive, though 2023 reviews say the cars were new. Eight renters report an unmanned desk at pickup or return, and a few report no replies after a breakdown, with one battery fix in 45 minutes the best case.

The deposit is an 8,000 THB card hold, credit card only, and three renters report waiting 15 days or more for release. The excess is 8,000 THB and tyres and glass may be excluded. Pickup scratches are documented and no damage claims turned up in the sample, which is a point in its favour.

Prepay online, aim for a daytime arrival when the desk is staffed, and keep a copy of the key box instructions. It suits budget renters with a card and no tight flight connection.

Hertz Koh Samui

Hertz Koh Samui scores 6.4 on only 27 reviews, with most categories at the 6.0 little-data default, so this is the least certain score on the board. What reviews report is friendly staff who meet renters at arrivals, a valet-style return and about three-year-old cars with dings. Two renters call the location hard to find because the Google pin is wrong, and one says the phone number is dead.

There are no usable deposit or insurance terms in the reviews, and no breakdown data. One-way rentals from Bangkok are reported working. It suits renters who book a one-way rental and can sort out the terms by email before arrival.

Budget Koh Samui

Budget Koh Samui scores 5.9 on 19 reviews read, the thinnest sample on the board. Clean, good-condition cars are reported most often and walk-in cars were available when others were sold out. The only serious signal is negative: one renter reports no phone answer for two hours after an accident, and another waited an hour at return.

Comprehensive cover is sold at the desk for about 7 USD a day (~245 THB) per a renter report, and no deposit terms were found. The rate runs 700-900 THB. It suits a last-minute airport rental on a short trip where you do not expect to need roadside support, and not much else on this evidence.

Thai Rent A Car

Thai Rent A Car scores 5.7 on 92 reviews, the lowest on the board. The airport counter is easy to find, 37 of 92 reviews praise staff and rates of 750-950 THB are near or under the median. The problems are in the contract: a credit card is required, and one March 2026 renter without one was turned away at the counter after paying through Booking.com.

Six of 92 reviews describe deposit or scratch deductions, including 5,000 THB for a scratch described as polishable, and two renters wait 6 weeks and 7 months for refunds. Two renters report cars at 150,000 km or more, one with engine cut-outs. One renter on a full-cover rate was told the scratches were theirs. Qeeq reviewers score it 9.4 out of 10, so the scores split by source. There is no hotel delivery.

It suits card holders who photograph everything. It is a poor fit for cash renters and anyone who dreads scratch claims.

Airport Desk or Delivery Company: Which Should You Pick?

An airport desk is faster on arrival and easier to find; a delivery company saves the walk and the card. In this sample the delivery company scores highest and the biggest-name brands score lowest. Airport desks (Drive, ASAP, Thai Rent A Car, Sixt, Hertz, Budget, Europcar) ASAP, Sixt and Thai Rent A Car need a credit card, Drive takes card or cash, and none of them delivers to hotels.

Option Typical deposit Suits
Airport desk Card hold 6,000-8,000 THB Card holders, short stays
Delivery company (Samui Cars Group) Cash 5,000-6,000 THB No card, hotel pickup, long stays
Private driver instead None No licence, see private drivers

Delivery companies work through WhatsApp, which is fast but means no instant online confirmation. Airport desks have fixed hours, with several closing by 19:00-20:00, and Sixt and Hertz reviews describe empty desks. If you land late or in a rush, airport transfers cover the first night and you can collect a delivered car the next morning.

Credit Card Holds or Cash Deposits?

Cards and cash both appear, and neither is worse if the refund is on time. The card hold (ASAP 6,000 THB, Sixt 8,000 THB) is released by the bank, and the cash deposit (Samui Cars Group 5,000-6,000 THB) is returned at handback. Reviews report the cash version returned on the spot far more often. The slow cases are on card holds: Sixt renters wait 15 days or more, and Thai Rent A Car renters report 6 weeks and 7 months.

Ask for the release timeline in writing, use a card with a high limit, and keep the receipt. A passport should not be left as security: no company in this sample was reported holding one, and the driving guide explains why. Cash renters should confirm before travel, since Thai Rent A Car and ASAP refuse cash.

What Does “Full Cover” Still Not Cover?

Full cover, or zero excess, covers the car body and theft in these reviews, but it does not cover keys, number plates, tyres or glass, and the companies say so in different words. The same exclusions come up at Drive (about 15,000 THB for a lost key or plate), ASAP (a 3,210 THB plate charge), Europcar (keys and plate only) and Sixt (tyres, glass, underbody may be excluded).

  • Zero excess: Drive Car Rental sells it, and three renters call it unique at the airport.
  • Included: Samui Cars Group includes full cover in the quote, and the excess equals the deposit per one renter.
  • Excess figures: Sixt 8,000 THB, Europcar 9,630-20,000 THB per an aggregator, Thai Rent A Car 10,000-20,000 THB (unconfirmed search snippet).

Read the paper: it should name the excess, who pays for a flat tyre and what happens at the police report. Third-party and medical cover is separate, and your travel policy may exclude driving. The car rental guide explains typical Samui excess ranges.

Licence and IDP: What Do Rental Desks Ask For?

You need your home car licence plus an International Driving Permit with the car category, carried together, and Thailand recognises IDPs under the 1949 Geneva and 1968 Vienna conventions (The Thaiger, March 2026; the US Embassy in Thailand also asks for an IDP). Some desks do not check, but an insurer can refuse a claim without them. Visitors may drive on a home licence plus IDP for about 90 days per entry. Full rules are on the driving guide.

The IDP must be bought at home; Thailand does not issue it to tourists. A car IDP does not cover a scooter: the scooter rental guide has the motorcycle licence facts, and the scooter shop ratings rank the shops if you ride instead.

How Do You Avoid a Damage Claim?

Document the car before you drive it. Take a video of every panel, wheels, windscreen, roof, interior and the fuel gauge, with the staff member present and the date visible, and keep it until the deposit is back. Of the eight companies, scratch and damage disputes show up most at Thai Rent A Car (6 of 92 reviews describe deductions) and as scattered single cases at Drive, Samui Cars Group and Europcar.

  • Mark every existing scratch on the company’s diagram and get a photo of the signed sheet.
  • Photograph the odometer and fuel at pickup and at return.
  • Return at the desk when staffed; otherwise film the car at the key box.
  • Report any accident to the police (191 or Tourist Police 1155) and then the company.

What Should You Check Before You Drive Away?

Check tyres (including tread and the spare), the air conditioning, lights, brakes and wipers, and ask for the emergency number on the contract. Older cars come up in the reports: 150,000 km Thai Rent A Car cars and a 140,000 km Europcar car, so a quick test drive on the first road is worthwhile. Steep hills on Route 4170 punish weak brakes.

Confirm the fuel policy (usually same-to-same), the return time and the hotel or pier drop if you pay for delivery. The driving guide has parking notes for Chaweng and fuel stops; Lamai is the other busy parking spot, and consider a private driver for nights out.

How Much Does a Rental Cost in Peak Season?

Expect the island median of 850 THB a day (~24 USD) for an economy car in low season and 1,050 THB (~30 USD) in high season, 1,100-1,400 THB (~31-40 USD) for a compact and 1,500-2,200 THB (~43-63 USD) for an SUV. Median figures use aggregator and company price lists checked October 2026, and weekly rates are lower. The cheapest advertised rates here are Sixt at 700-750 THB and ASAP at 650-950 THB.

A cheap quote can climb at the desk: cover about 245 THB a day at Budget, a refuel fee at Europcar, or a delivery fee at the airport. Price the whole bill, including excess, before comparing.

Booking Tips

  • Book in November-March a week or more ahead; delivery companies fill first.
  • Prefer a company with a named WhatsApp contact and keep the chat.
  • Confirm the pickup place for Hertz, Europcar and Sixt, where renters report wrong pins and empty desks.
  • Send the licence and IDP photo ahead if the company asks.
  • Pay by a card with chargeback protection where the company takes one.

FAQ

What is the best car rental company on Koh Samui?

Samui Cars Group scores highest at 8.9 of 10 on 186 reviews read, with free hotel delivery and a cash deposit. For an airport desk, Drive Car Rental scores 8.1 and ASAP Car Rentals 7.8. Rankings come from reviews, checked October 2026.

Which company has the cheapest cars?

Sixt (700-750 THB) and ASAP (650-950 THB) advertise the lowest economy rates, against an island median of 850-1,050 THB. Sixt reviews report dented cars and unmanned desks, so the cheapest is not the best value here.

Do I need a credit card to rent a car on Koh Samui?

Not always. Samui Cars Group takes a 5,000-6,000 THB cash deposit, and Drive accepts cash or card. ASAP, Sixt and Thai Rent A Car need a credit card, and one renter was turned away without one.

Is full cover really full cover?

Mostly, with exclusions. Reviews report that keys, plates, tyres and glass stay on the renter, for example 15,000 THB for a lost key or plate at Drive and a 3,210 THB plate charge at ASAP. Ask for a written list.

Is it better to rent at the airport or have the car delivered?

The airport saves time on arrival, while delivery saves a trip and works without a card. Samui Cars Group delivers to hotels and piers, and the airport brands only hand over at the desk.

Can I rent a car with a licence and no IDP?

Some desks hand over keys on a home licence alone, but Thai law needs an IDP with the car category, and insurers can reject a claim without it. The driving guide has the details.

Checklist

Before you go

Three things worth checking for this journey, each with the guide that covers it.

  1. Carry the right licence

Your home licence plus an International Driving Permit with the right category. Police checkpoints ask for both, and insurers ask after a crash.

  2. Keep your passport

Many shops ask to hold it as a deposit. Offer cash and a passport copy instead, and try the next shop if they refuse.

  3. Check what your insurance covers

Many travel policies exclude or limit motorbike accidents, and a crash without the right licence can void a claim. Read yours before you ride or drive.
