Koh Samui bicycle rental costs about 150-250 THB a day for city and mountain bikes, 250-320 THB for e-bikes. Deposits, checks, flat routes and hills to skip.

A bicycle on Koh Samui costs about 150-250 THB (~4.50-7 USD) a day for a city or mountain bike and 250-320 THB (~7-9 USD) for an e-bike, with weekly rates of roughly 950-1,000 THB. Shops cluster around Bophut, Lamai and Chaweng, and some deliver to your hotel. Bikes suit flat stretches such as Bophut to Maenam, not the hilly Route 4169 ring road. Never leave a passport as a deposit.

Key takeaways

  • City or mountain bike: about 150-200 THB a day, 950 THB a week (Samui Cycle Hire, Lamai, checked 1 Oct 2026). E-bike: from 250 THB a day (E-Revolution, Bophut) or 320 THB (Velib Samui).
  • Deposits run 1,000-5,000 THB cash. Pay cash, keep your passport.
  • Bophut to Maenam is about 7 km, 30-45 minutes at an easy pace, on the flattest and quietest part of the island.
  • Ride before 10:00 or after 16:00. Midday heat and traffic are the real limits.
  • Road bikes are hard to find on Samui: the one road-bike operator we found rents out of Phang Nga, not the island.

Where can you rent a bicycle on Koh Samui?

You can rent from small independent shops, e-bike specialists and a few hotels. Samui Cycle Hire sits in Lamai (169/8 Moo 4), and E-Revolution (also trading as KohCycle) is in Bophut near Fisherman’s Village. Velib Samui lists premium e-bikes. Tour operators run guided mountain-bike and e-bike rides. Bicycles are a small market here, so shops are few and often close on Tuesdays.

Hours are short: both list 09:00-17:00, closed Tuesdays (Tripadvisor for E-Revolution). Searches for “bike rental” mostly return motorbikes: see the scooter rental guide, and getting around Koh Samui for the wider picture.

How much does a city bike cost to rent?

A city bike costs about 150-160 THB (~4.50-4.50 USD) for a day and 950 THB (~27 USD) for a week at Samui Cycle Hire, which lists 7-speed bikes for 2,500 THB (~71 USD) a month. A 12-speed hybrid is listed at 1,000 THB (~29 USD) a week. Lights and a lock are included, and helmets are rented separately (Samui Cycle Hire, checked 1 Oct 2026).

Delivery to your hotel costs 200-400 THB each way and applies to orders above 1,400 THB, so it fits a week better than a day. Frames are listed in 17-19 inches, so shorter riders should ask what is in stock. This matches the range in our getting around guide.

Is a mountain bike worth renting?

For most visitors, only if you plan side roads or want a sturdier frame. Samui Cycle Hire prices its 27-30 speed hydraulic-brake mountain bikes the same as city bikes, 150-160 THB a day and 950 THB a week, so the choice is about comfort, not cost. E-Revolution lists Trek and Specialized mountain bikes from about 7 USD (~245 THB) a day on Tripadvisor.

Guided rides are the other route. Easy Day Samui runs a half-day tour of about 38 km, easy grade, 4 hours with roughly 3 hours riding, starting 08:00, minimum age 12, March to August only. A Viator half-day electric tour to the Big Buddha and temples starts from 133 USD (~4,650 THB), and a full-day village and plantation ride from 104 USD (~3,640 THB), checked 1 Oct 2026. Road bikes: Chilli Cycling lists Merida Scultura 400 at 700 THB a day, but its terminal and delivery zones are in Phang Nga, Phuket and Khao Lak, so treat it as a mainland benchmark only.

Should you rent an e-bike?

An e-bike is worth the extra 100-170 THB a day if you ride in the heat or want to reach gentle hills. E-Revolution lists e-bikes at 250 THB (~7 USD) a day, with helmets, locks, vests and charging cables included, and Velib Samui lists premium e-bikes from 320 THB (~9 USD) a day (listings, checked 1 Oct 2026).

Battery range matters. A Tripadvisor reviewer of E-Revolution noted that a full island circuit may need a top-up at a bar or cafe, and the same listing says steep climbs are limited. Ask the shop how far a charge lasts. E-bike fleets are small, so message a day ahead in high season.

Do hotels lend bicycles?

Some do. A few resorts and guesthouses keep bikes for guests, free or for a small fee, and one Chaweng hotel listing said its guest bikes were off for six months of renovation. We found no island-wide list or price, so ask when booking and check the bike before accepting it.

Hotel bikes are often basic, in one or two sizes, and may lack lights or a good lock. They suit a 10-minute ride to the beach or market; for longer rides a shop bike is a better bet.

Do you have to leave a passport or deposit?

No, and you should not. Deposits are cash: 1,000 THB (~29 USD) at Samui Cycle Hire and 5,000 THB (~143 USD) per bicycle at E-Revolution, which also lists a passport as an alternative. Pay cash. A passport is needed for hotel stays, banks and emergencies, and a lost one costs far more than any deposit.

If a shop insists on a passport, walk away, or offer a photocopy plus cash. Get a receipt listing the deposit and bike, photograph scratches, and return the bike before closing, usually 17:00.

What should you check before you ride?

Check brakes, tyres, lights, lock, saddle height and gears, in that order, before you leave the shop. It takes two minutes.

  • Brakes: levers should stop well before the bar, with no grinding or squealing. Hydraulic or disc brakes cope better with wet roads.
  • Lights: front and rear LED lights, working. Samui Cycle Hire includes them; roads are dark after 18:00.
  • Lock: a chain or cable lock, plus a note of where the shop wants bikes returned.
  • Helmet: rent or bring one. The helmet fine reported for motorbikes does not cover bicycles in the sources we found, but a helmet is sensible on Samui’s traffic.
  • Tyres and bell: firm, uncracked tyres and a working bell.

Which routes are flat and which hills to avoid?

The north coast is the flat part: Bophut to Maenam is about 7 km each way, 30-45 minutes at 12-15 km/h, past Fisherman’s Village and the beach road. Lamai centre is also workable, with short flat stretches along the beach road. Distances are estimates, not measured trips.

Avoid the climbs: the road between Chaweng and Lamai has steep sections and heavy traffic, and the interior roads to temples, waterfalls and viewpoints climb hard. The ring road is about 51 km, 1.5-2 hours by scooter, which is a long day on a bike in the heat. Our getting around guide says a bike is for the beach and the market, not the ring road.

What about heat, rain and the best hours?

Ride in the first hours after sunrise or after about 16:00. Koh Samui stays hot all year, and midday sun with traffic is the main reason people give up on cycling here. The island has two rainy peaks, May and October-November, with November the wettest at about 445 mm over 16 days (Climates to Travel normals, as used in our best time to visit guide).

Wet roads cut braking grip, so choose disc or hydraulic brakes. January to April is the best window. Carry at least 1 litre of water and plan a shaded stop every 30-45 minutes.

How safe is the traffic on Route 4169?

Route 4169 is a two-lane road with narrow or missing shoulders, heavy scooter and truck traffic, and few cycle lanes, which is why we keep bikes to village stretches. Evening traffic is heaviest through central Chaweng and Lamai; the north past Bophut and Maenam is quieter and better paved.

Ride single file, keep left, and use lights at dusk. Do not ride at night or on the Chaweng-Lamai climb.

Can you combine a bike with a songthaew?

Yes, loosely. Ride the flat leg, then take a songthaew or Grab for the hilly or dark leg, but we found no source saying songthaews carry bicycles, so plan to leave the bike at a shop or hotel. A shop that delivers and collects (200-400 THB each way at Samui Cycle Hire) makes one-way rides practical.

If you want a motor for the hills, a rental scooter needs a motorcycle licence and an International Driving Permit, as set out in the scooter rental guide.

FAQ

How much does it cost to rent a bicycle on Koh Samui?

A city or mountain bike costs about 150-200 THB (~4.50-5.50 USD) a day, or 950-1,000 THB (~27-29 USD) a week. E-bikes cost 250-320 THB (~7-9 USD) a day. Prices are from operator pages checked 1 Oct 2026 and move with the season.

Do I need to leave my passport to rent a bike?

No. Pay a cash deposit, which ranges from 1,000 to 5,000 THB, and keep your passport. Some shops accept a passport as an alternative, but a lost or held passport causes far more trouble than a cash deposit does.

Can I rent a road bike on Koh Samui?

We found no Samui road-bike rental. Chilli Cycling lists Merida road bikes at 700 THB a day, but from Phang Nga with delivery around Phuket and Khao Lak, not Samui. Ask a local shop or tour operator whether they hold one.

Is a bike or a scooter better on Koh Samui?

A bike is cheaper and needs no licence, but only for flat, short rides. A scooter covers the ring road and hills, and needs a motorcycle licence plus an International Driving Permit for most visitors. See the scooter rental guide.

Checklist

Before you go

Three things worth checking for this journey, each with the guide that covers it.

  1. Wear the helmet on every ride

Helmets are the law for rider and passenger, with fines up to 2,000 THB each. Ask for one that fits and has a working strap.

    Scooter rental guide
  2. Have a rain plan

Most rain is a short afternoon squall, but multi-day rain can flood low stretches of the east coast road. Wet roads hit bikes hardest, so keep a backup way to get there.

    Rainy season
  3. Plan the ride home after dark

Shared songthaews thin out after dark and quotes rise towards taxi prices. Grab is thinner late at night too, so arrange the ride back before you go out.
