Koh Samui motorbike taxis in orange or blue vests charge about 50-100 THB a short hop. Where to find them, helmet fines, luggage and alternatives.

A motorbike taxi on Koh Samui costs about 50-100 THB (~1.50-3 USD) for a short hop in Chaweng or Lamai, and 200 THB (~5.50 USD) or more for longer rides. Riders wear orange or blue numbered vests, wait at ranks and take one passenger with a small bag. Agree the price before you get on, and wear a helmet: the fine is up to 2,000 THB per person.

Key takeaways

  • Short hop: 50-100 THB; longer: 200 THB and up. No meters, the price is negotiated each time (Explore Samui, checked Oct 2026).
  • Look for vests with a number and “TAXI” on the back, at junctions, markets and the centres of Chaweng and Lamai.
  • Helmet fine since 1 Jun 2025: up to 2,000 THB per unhelmeted person.
  • One passenger, small bag only. For luggage, groups or late nights use a taxi or Grab.
  • No public tuk-tuks on Samui.

How Do You Spot and Hire a Motorbike Taxi?

Look for riders in orange or blue vests with a licence number, with “TAXI” and their rank written on the back. They wait at junctions, outside markets and around the centres of Chaweng and Lamai, and a wave flags one down. Ask the rank name and your destination, then agree the fare out loud before you climb on.

A Tripadvisor destination expert noted that Chaweng has a handful of riders, but fewer along the main beach road than before. Reddit posters say many Samui riders work informally and do not use apps, so expect cash only.

Typical prices, all negotiated: short hops 50-100 THB, longer rides 200 THB or more (Explore Samui, checked 1 Oct 2026). A Tripadvisor thread guessed “perhaps 50 baht” for a town hop, but that post is several years old. Treat 50 THB as the floor, not the rule.

Is a Songthaew Better Than a Motorbike Taxi?

On price per person, yes. A songthaew costs about 30-60 THB per person for a short in-town hop, runs along the ring road and takes several passengers. The motorbike taxi wins when you are alone, in a hurry or off the road the trucks drive, since a rider can leave the ring road.

See the songthaew guide for routes and fares. Songthaews have no timetable and are scarce after about 8-10 PM (getting around guide, Oct 2026).

Is Grab Better Than a Motorbike Taxi?

For comfort, luggage and night rides, yes. Grab shows the fare upfront and typically costs 150-450 THB (~4.50-13 USD) for a car across the island, more than a rider. GrabBike (the motorbike option) is unconfirmed: one Tripadvisor forum poster quoted 63 THB for a 5.2 km ride, but a Reddit thread says Samui has no Grab scooter taxis.

Do not count on GrabBike; open the app to check. Grab cannot pick up inside the airport terminal. Details: Grab, Bolt and taxi guide.

Option Short hop Luggage Night
Motorbike taxi 50-100 THB Small bag Some riders, ask
Songthaew 30-60 THB per person Backpack Scarce after 8-10 PM
Grab (car) 150-450 THB Yes Yes, fewer drivers late

Are Motorbike Taxis Safe? Helmets and Insurance

A helmet is required for rider and passenger, and since 1 June 2025 the fine is up to 2,000 THB (~57 USD) per unhelmeted person, up from 500 THB. Reports say a rider carrying an unhelmeted passenger can be charged as well, 4,000 THB in total (Bangkok Post, June 2025). The same rule is in our scooter rental guide.

Ask for a helmet before you start. Pattaya riders told The Thaiger that tourists often refuse shared helmets, so if none is offered, walk away.

Insurance: a Tripadvisor poster warned that some travel policies specifically exclude any travel by motorcycle, and the Grab Bike option falls under that. Whether your own policy covers a pillion ride is not verified here, so read your policy wording first.

What About Luggage, Night Rides and Etiquette?

Take one passenger and a small bag on your lap or back, nothing larger. Night rides exist near Chaweng and Lamai nightlife, but fewer riders work late and visibility drops, so a taxi or Grab is the safer pick. Agree the price first, hold on to the grab rail or the rider, lean with the bike and keep your feet clear of the exhaust.

Are There Tuk-Tuks on Koh Samui?

Not as public transport. Guides say tuk-tuks as in Bangkok are not part of Samui, and a few hotels keep one as decoration or for their own guests. Songthaews fill that role, and Getting around Koh Samui covers every option. For riding yourself, see the scooter rental guide and motorbike culture.

Not confirmed. One Tripadvisor poster quoted 63 THB for a 5.2 km GrabBike ride, but a Reddit thread says there are no Grab scooter taxis on Samui. Open the Grab app at your hotel to see if the bike option appears, and fall back on a vest rider or a songthaew.

Checklist

Before you go

Three things worth checking for this journey, each with the guide that covers it.

  1. Wear the helmet on every ride

Helmets are the law for rider and passenger, with fines up to 2,000 THB each. Ask for one that fits and has a working strap.

  2. Agree the fare before you get in

Taxis have no meters, so settle the price for the whole car first. Book through Grab and the price is fixed before you ride.

    Taxi, Grab and Bolt
  3. Check what your insurance covers

Many travel policies exclude or limit motorbike accidents, and a crash without the right licence can void a claim. Read yours before you ride or drive.
