No ferry sails from Bangkok to Koh Samui on a schedule. Bus or train plus boat takes 11-17 hours and costs 620-1,900 THB. Compare 4 overland routes, 2026.

There is no scheduled ferry from Bangkok to Koh Samui. Every “Bangkok to Samui ferry” ticket sold on a regular day is a bus or train to the Gulf coast plus a boat from Chumphon or Donsak. The overland trip takes 11-17 hours and costs about 620-1,900 THB (~18-54 USD) per person, depending on the route. The cheapest is the government bus, the most comfortable is the sleeper train, and the quickest is Lomprayah’s bus plus catamaran ticket.

Key takeaways

  • Lomprayah joint ticket: 11.5-14.25 hours, 1,250-1,750 THB, one booking from Bangkok to Samui via Chumphon.
  • Night train + ferry: train 85 leaves at 19:50, reaches Surat Thani at 06:23, Samui by late morning. About 1,100-1,900 THB.
  • Government bus + ferry: cheapest, 620-960 THB at the counter, 11-16 hours, lands at Nathon.
  • Khao San buses: 850-1,500 THB, the most complaints about stolen items. Keep valuables on your lap.
  • One real ferry exists: the Seahorse overnight cruise, 22-24 hours, only on announced dates. See below.

Is there a ferry from Bangkok to Koh Samui?

Not on a regular timetable. Direct Ferries states that no ferry currently sails Bangkok to Koh Samui (Mae Nam Pier) and points travellers to the Lomprayah bus-and-boat combination instead (checked October 2026). The only exception is the Seahorse Ferry, a cruise-style ship that sails from a Bangkok pier to Nathon on announced dates, covered further down.

The sea part of any other trip starts at Chumphon (Lomprayah catamaran) or Donsak near Surat Thani (Raja Ferry, Seatran, Lomprayah catamaran). Ferry fares and timetables for that leg are on the Surat Thani to Koh Samui page, which this guide does not repeat. For all ways to reach the island, including flights, see how to get to Koh Samui.

How do the four overland routes compare?

Door to door, the four overland routes take 11-17 hours. They differ in price, comfort and how many separate tickets you handle. Prices below are one-way per person from operator and agent listings checked in September and October 2026; agents add a markup.

Route Time Price (THB) Best for
Lomprayah bus + catamaran via Chumphon 11.5-14.25 h 1,250-1,750 One ticket, fast boat
Night train 85 + bus + ferry 14-17 h 1,100-1,900 A bed, a daytime arrival
Government bus + ferry 11-16 h 620-960 (counter) Lowest price
Khao San tourist bus + ferry 11-15 h 850-1,500 Pickup in the backpacker area

For comparison, flying nonstop takes about 1 hour 15 minutes from roughly 2,300 THB; see flights from Bangkok to Koh Samui.

How does the Lomprayah joint ticket via Chumphon work?

Lomprayah sells one ticket for an air-conditioned coach from Bangkok to Chumphon and a high-speed catamaran on to Koh Samui. Listings in 2026 show 1,450 THB for a standard bus and 1,750 THB for a VIP bus, with the total trip at 11.5-14.25 hours. It is the fastest of the overland routes because the boat crosses the Gulf in one leg.

  1. Buy the joint ticket online or at the Lomprayah Bangkok office. Ticket2Attraction reports that the office moved from Khao San Road to the former Southern Bus Terminal area in Pinklao on 21 November 2024. Some agent pages still say Khao San, so read the pickup point on your voucher.
  2. Board a day coach (about 06:00) or an overnight coach (about 21:00). Departures run roughly 06:00-22:00 (Ticket2Attraction, Siam Tickets, 2026).
  3. Change at Chumphon to the Lomprayah bus or shuttle to Thung Makham pier, about 35 minutes (Black Turtle Dive).
  4. Take the catamaran. A 06:00 departure reaches Samui around 17:30, and a 21:00 departure about 11:30 the next morning (agent listings, 2026).
  5. Land at Maenam pier on Samui’s north coast (project ferry data), close to Maenam Beach. One agent lists Bang Rak instead, so confirm the pier on your ticket.

The Chumphon to Samui catamaran does not run every day. Direct Ferries lists two departures (08:00 and 12:30) about 14 times a week, and the project data notes lower frequency outside June-September. A ticket sold for a given date already accounts for this, which is the argument for buying the joint ticket rather than turning up at Chumphon. Official timetables are at lomprayah.com.

How does the night train plus ferry work?

The sleeper train 85 leaves Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal at 19:50 and reaches Surat Thani at 06:23, according to Siam Tickets and Visit Thailand Today (September 2026). A van-and-ferry ticket then gets you to Samui by late morning. Total cost is about 1,100-1,900 THB and the door-to-door time is 14-17 hours.

  1. Book a seat at railway.co.th or through an agent. SRT opens sales 90 days ahead, and lower berths go first in high season.
  2. Choose a berth. A 2nd class air-conditioned sleeper is about 820-1,100 THB (Siam Tickets lists 820-900, a booking site lists 1,004-1,104), 1st class about 1,300-1,900 THB.
  3. Board at Krung Thep Aphiwat, the big terminal at Bang Sue that replaced Hua Lamphong for long-distance trains in 2023.
  4. Step off at Surat Thani (Phun Phin) station at 06:23. Combined van-and-ferry tickets are sold at the station, 490-558 THB with Raja Ferry or about 750 THB with Lomprayah (see Surat Thani to Koh Samui).
  5. Cross from Donsak to Nathon or Lipa Noi and reach your hotel around midday.

The Chumphon variant. Train 85 also stops at Chumphon, reported at about 03:43 (thailandtrains.com). Lomprayah runs a shuttle for it to the pier, and the catamaran to Koh Tao leaves at about 07:30. Samui-bound sailings on this leg are fewer, so this only works on days the Chumphon to Samui boat runs. Check before you commit.

The train is the best sleeper option, with a bed and a restaurant car. It is also the route most likely to fill, so book early. The 06:23 arrival leaves time to catch the morning boats, which is why backpackers have used it for years.

How does the government bus plus ferry via Surat Thani work?

The government-licensed VIP coaches run by Transport Co. leave Bangkok’s Southern Bus Terminal (Sai Tai Mai). The bus to Surat Thani is about 12 hours, with VIP 24 fares of roughly 920-970 THB and Express 36 at about 620 THB (Siam Tickets, 2026). A combined bus-and-Seatran ticket is quoted at 620-960 THB at the counter and 1,130-1,530 THB online (Visit Thailand Today, 29 September 2026).

  1. Go to Sai Tai Mai (Borommaratchachonni Road, Taling Chan). VIP buses leave around 17:00-21:00, with one at 06:00.
  2. Buy at the counter if you can. Online agents charge a markup.
  3. Ride the coach down Highway 41 to the Surat Thani area, then on to Donsak Pier.
  4. Cross on Seatran to Nathon or on Raja Ferry to Lipa Noi: 80-100 minutes, 180 THB and 120-210 THB walk-up respectively (project ferry data, October 2026).
  5. Take a taxi or songthaew from Nathon or Lipa Noi to your beach.

Phantip and other operators also sell combined bus-and-ferry tickets on the Surat Thani side. That matters if you break the trip in Surat Thani or buy a through ticket there. Overall the route takes 11-16 hours, the spread coming from how well the bus meets the ferry. Allow a buffer on the Donsak side and do not plan a tight onward connection.

Are Khao San Road tourist buses worth it?

They are the easiest to find and the most criticised. Khao San agents sell bus-and-ferry packages for 850-1,500 THB, with departures around 18:45-22:00 (Siam Tickets, Visit Thailand Today, 2026). The price is higher than the government bus and the quality varies by operator, so they suit people who want a pickup in the backpacker area and accept the risk.

Complaints about stolen items on these buses are documented. In July 2018 Nation Thailand reported a French tourist who said 350 euros went missing from her bag on a Khao San to Koh Phangan bus run by Monthanathip Travel. She told police she saw a bus worker go through bags while most passengers slept. Travelfish forum threads and a Koh Tao Tripadvisor thread carry similar reports. These are individual accounts, not a measured rate, and we found no 2026 incident report. The government buses are not immune, but the pattern of complaints points at the budget tourist coaches.

What helps:

  • Keep passport, phone, cash and cards in a small bag on your seat, not in the hold.
  • Lock the zips on your main bag.
  • Ask the agent for the operator name and the exact pickup point, and take a photo of the bus plate.
  • Compare the price with the government bus: it is usually lower for the same road.

What is the Seahorse overnight ferry?

It is the one sea route that really starts in Bangkok. The Seahorse Ferry is a cruise-style ship carrying about 400 passengers and 200 cars, sailing from the Saeng Thong pier in Rat Burana to Nathon in 22-24 hours on announced dates (Visit Thailand Today, September 2026; Seahorse Ferry, January-May 2026 schedule). Reported fares run from 1,500 THB for a recliner seat to 3,500 THB for a capsule and up to 22,500 THB for a suite.

Sources disagree on the departure time (around 14:00-15:30) and on arrival (about 11:00-15:00 the next day). One 2026 review says it runs April to October only. Treat it as a trip in its own right, not a fast or cheap transfer: a flight is faster, and the government bus is cheaper than any cabin. A reviewer in January 2026 called the capsule cabin and rooftop deck a highlight, and put a taxi from Nathon to Chaweng at 800 THB. Check dates and prices on theseahorseferry.com before you plan around it.

Which route is best for which traveller?

Pick by what you are saving. The government bus saves the most money, the train saves a hotel night and gives a proper bed, and the Lomprayah joint ticket saves the most time overland. Flying remains quicker than all of them.

You are Take Why
On a tight budget Government bus + Seatran 620-960 THB, counter fares
Wanting a bed Night train 85 Sleeper berth, restaurant car
After the fastest overland trip Lomprayah joint ticket 11.5-14.25 h, one booking
Travelling with luggage or kids Night train or Lomprayah VIP Less hold handling
Short on time Fly About 1 h 15 min nonstop

How do you get back from Koh Samui to Bangkok?

Reverse the same routes. Lomprayah’s catamaran leaves Nathon at about 08:30 and 11:45, and its speedboat leaves Maenam at about 08:30 (SiamTickets, October 2026), connecting to buses toward Bangkok. Car ferries leave Nathon (Seatran) and Lipa Noi (Raja Ferry) through the day, per the project ferry data.

For the sleeper train, leave Samui by early afternoon so you reach Surat Thani with time to spare, and check the Surat Thani to Bangkok timetable on the SRT site, since we did not confirm the current departure time. For a flight home from Surat Thani airport, reach Donsak at least 3 hours before departure. Details of the Surat Thani side are in Surat Thani to Koh Samui, which covers the return leg.

What goes wrong on the overland trip?

Most problems come from connections, not the vehicles. Overnight buses run late, the first morning boat does not wait, and a separate ticket for each leg gives you nobody to rebook you.

  • Missed boat: buy a through ticket and leave a buffer of at least 90 minutes on the Donsak side.
  • Wrong pier: Raja Ferry lands at Lipa Noi, Seatran at Nathon, and the Lomprayah catamaran from Chumphon at Maenam. Check the pier on your voucher before you book a taxi. See the ferry piers guide.
  • Rough seas: from roughly September to November the Gulf is choppier, and the catamarans are cancelled more often than the car ferries.
  • Pickup confusion: several agents sell the same coach. Confirm in writing whether the pickup is Khao San, Mo Chit or Pinklao.
  • Cold bus: the air conditioning is strong. Bring a layer.

Once you land, getting around Koh Samui covers taxis and scooters, and Chaweng is the usual first base.

FAQ

Is there a direct ferry from Bangkok to Koh Samui?

Not on a regular timetable. The Seahorse Ferry sails from Bangkok to Nathon on announced dates (check its schedule), taking 22-24 hours from about 1,500 THB (~43 USD). Every other “ferry” ticket combines a bus or train with a boat from Chumphon or Donsak.

What is the cheapest way from Bangkok to Koh Samui without flying?

The government bus plus Seatran or Raja ferry. A combined ticket is 620-960 THB (~18-27 USD) at the counter, as of September 2026, and takes 11-16 hours. Online agents list 1,130-1,530 THB for the same trip. The train is dearer, but includes a bed.

How long does the Bangkok to Koh Samui train and ferry take?

About 14-17 hours door to door. Train 85 leaves Krung Thep Aphiwat at 19:50 and reaches Surat Thani at 06:23. The van and ferry add 3-5 hours, so most travellers reach Samui late in the morning.

Is Lomprayah’s Bangkok to Koh Samui ticket one booking?

Yes. It covers a coach to Chumphon and the catamaran to Samui for 1,450 THB (standard) or 1,750 THB (VIP), taking 11.5-14.25 hours. The Bangkok office moved from Khao San to Pinklao in November 2024, so check the pickup point on your voucher.

Are Khao San Road buses to Koh Samui safe?

Mostly they arrive, but theft from the luggage hold is the recurring complaint, for example a 2018 Nation Thailand report on a Khao San to Koh Phangan bus. Keep valuables in a bag you hold, lock your zips, and consider the government bus from Sai Tai Mai.

Can I do the trip in one day?

Yes, with the Lomprayah 06:00 bus, which reaches Samui around 17:30 per agent listings. Other routes are overnight. Leaving in the morning avoids sleeping on the coach but arrives after dark in the busier months, so book your first night’s stay in advance.

Checklist

Before you go

Three things worth checking for this journey, each with the guide that covers it.

  1. Buy one ticket, not three

A joint ticket covers bus and boat in one booking, so someone can rebook you if a leg runs late. With separate tickets you are on your own.

  2. Book ahead for peak dates

Seats rarely sell out outside Christmas, New Year and Songkran, but the cheap fares go first. Book flights and peak-season boats well ahead.

    When to book
  3. Know the last boat

Boats stop by early evening and some leave only in the morning. A late flight or bus can leave you on the mainland overnight.
