Yes, Grab works on Koh Samui: airport to Chaweng is about 300 THB, 20-30% under a taxi. Coverage, GrabCar vs GrabBike, payment, pickup point, first ride.

Yes, Grab works on Koh Samui, with limits. A GrabCar from the airport to Chaweng costs about 300 THB (~8.50 USD) in 10-20 minutes, roughly 20-30% under the 500 THB taxi counter. Coverage is good in Chaweng, Bophut and Lamai, thin on the west coast and late at night, and the driver meets you outside the terminal, not at the kerb. Prices checked 1 October 2026.

Key takeaways

  • Grab is the main ride-hailing app on Samui. Uber does not operate here.
  • Airport to Chaweng: about 300 THB by Grab, 500 THB at the counter.
  • Pickup is outside the terminal on the public road: follow the in-app pin.
  • Cash and in-app card both work, but some drivers prefer cash.
  • After about 10 PM and on the west coast, expect long waits or no car.

This page covers how Grab behaves on the island. For all three apps and street taxis side by side, see the taxi, Grab and Bolt overview; for the arrival decision see Samui airport transfers.

Does Grab work on Koh Samui?

Yes. Grab operates island-wide and shows a fixed fare before you confirm, so there is no haggling. Inside Samui (2026) calls coverage “good in Chaweng, Bophut, around the airport; less reliable in remote areas”. The island is small, so driver numbers are far lower than in Bangkok or Phuket. Uber is not available.

Option Airport to Chaweng Verdict
GrabCar ~250-350 THB Default, fixed fare
GrabTaxi not confirmed on Samui Skip, use GrabCar
Street taxi or counter 300-500 THB Fallback, negotiate or prepay
Bolt similar to Grab Barely operates, use Grab

GrabCar: the default choice

GrabCar is a private car with a fixed price shown upfront. Grab’s own Samui airport page lists JustGrab (nearest car or taxi), GrabCar and GrabCar Premium at the airport, with about 200-350 THB (~5.50-10 USD) for a short hop of 5 km and 15 minutes. Other 2026 guides quote 150-200 THB to Chaweng; this site uses about 300 THB as a planning number, because the low quotes tend to be off-peak or from hotels.

Is GrabTaxi available on Koh Samui?

Not confirmed. No source shows a separate GrabTaxi (metered taxi) product on Samui, and Samui taxis are largely unmetered anyway. JustGrab, which Grab lists at the airport, picks the nearest car or taxi, so you may get a licensed taxi through it. Treat GrabCar or JustGrab as the product to pick.

What about GrabBike?

GrabBike on Samui is unconfirmed. Grab lists GrabBike (Win) at Samui airport and one Tripadvisor poster quoted 63 THB for 5.2 km, but a Reddit thread says there are no Grab scooter taxis on the island. No fares are published; open the app to see whether the bike option appears. For vest riders see the motorbike taxi guide. If it appears, expect a cheaper but exposed ride on the busy Route 4169, with no luggage space. Bikes suit one person with a small bag; see scooter rental for riding yourself.

Grab vs street taxi: real fares

Street taxis are unmetered, so Grab usually sits at the low end of each range in the site’s fare data. Figures below are THB per car, one way; the Grab column is an estimate of 20-30% under the taxi range, not a quoted fare, so check the app.

Route Time Taxi (negotiated or counter) Grab (estimate)
Airport to Chaweng 10-20 min 300-500 THB (~8.50-14 USD) ~300 THB (~8.50 USD)
Chaweng to Lamai 20-30 min 250-400 THB (~7-11 USD) ~200-300 THB
Bophut to Chaweng 15-25 min 200-400 THB (~5.50-11 USD) ~150-300 THB

Surge applies. Rain and the early-evening peak, roughly 5-7 PM, push Grab fares up, sometimes past a negotiated taxi price. Check the taxi quote before you accept a surged fare. Late-night trips cost more by any method.

Bolt and inDrive as backups

Bolt barely operates on Koh Samui: its own city list shows Surat Thani but not Samui (checked 1 Oct 2026), and travellers report few or no drivers; use Grab or a taxi. inDrive lets you propose the fare and one 2026 local guide calls it cheap but cash only. When Grab shows no cars, try inDrive or a taxi. Details for Bolt are in the Bolt guide.

Where is the Grab pickup at Samui Airport?

Outside the terminal, on the public road. Only licensed taxis may collect on airport grounds, so Grab cars wait beyond the forecourt. Grab’s page names the pickup as the “Arrival Entrance”, while most guides report a walk to the road: follow the pin in the app, not the name. Book while you collect bags, as driver supply on landing is not guaranteed. The prepaid counter stays the fallback; see Samui airport transfers and the airport guide. The return trip from a hotel has no such limit.

Where and when is Grab thin?

Thin spots: the west coast (Nathon, Lipa Noi, Taling Ngam), the interior and hills, and after about 10 PM. Things To Do in Samui (2026) says availability “thins after midnight in quieter areas”. Songthaews stop by 9-10 PM, so for late dinners in Chaweng or Bophut book a car early or arrange a return ride with your restaurant.

How do you pay for Grab on Koh Samui?

Cash or card in the app, chosen before booking. Grab’s page lists cash plus cashless options including WeChat Pay and Alipay. Inside Samui says payment depends on the driver. A foreign card should be added to the app before you land; carry 300-500 THB in small notes as a fallback, since some drivers cancel card-only rides.

Do local taxis block Grab?

Partly, in practice, though no official source documents a ban. A Tripadvisor forum poster describes a “fairly strong taxi mafia-style cartel” and says Grab users are “usually directed to a specific area away from the normal taxis”. Treat this as forum reports, not policy. Practical steps: meet the car where the app says, walk 100 m from a taxi rank, and do not start the ride from a hotel forecourt if a driver objects. Drivers sometimes also claim meters are broken on the street, a reason to use fixed-fare Grab.

Your first Grab ride, step by step

  1. Install Grab and add your phone number and payment method before you fly.
  2. Open the app, set your destination and pick GrabCar or JustGrab.
  3. Check the fixed fare and the pickup pin. Move the pin to the public road if it sits inside a gate.
  4. Confirm. Note the plate, driver name and photo.
  5. Use in-app chat (it auto-translates) if you cannot find the car.
  6. Match the plate before you get in, then share your trip.
  7. Pay by card or cash as selected. Rate the driver.

Is Grab safe on Koh Samui?

Grab shows real-time trip monitoring and live location sharing, per its airport page. Check the plate, sit behind the driver at night and share your trip link. These apply anywhere, and they beat flagging a street taxi in an unlit area, as Things To Do in Samui advises.

FAQ

Is there Grab in Koh Samui?

Yes. Grab works island-wide with a fixed fare shown before you book. Coverage is best in Chaweng, Bophut, Bang Rak and Lamai, and thin on the west coast and after about 10 PM. It cannot collect inside the airport, so arrivals meet the driver on the public road outside.

Does Koh Samui have Uber?

No. Uber does not operate on Koh Samui. The apps travellers use are Grab and inDrive, where you propose your own fare. Otherwise use street taxis, songthaews or a pre-booked driver.

How much is Grab from the airport to Chaweng?

About 300 THB (~8.50 USD) for a GrabCar, with Grab quoting 200-350 THB for a short airport hop and some guides lower. The prepaid counter charges 500 THB, so Grab is cheaper by roughly 20-30%, but you must walk to the road.

Can I pay Grab with a foreign card in Koh Samui?

Usually yes: add a card in the app before arriving and choose it at booking. Cash is also accepted, and Grab lists WeChat Pay and Alipay too. Some drivers prefer cash, so keep 300-500 THB in small notes in case a booking is cancelled.

Checklist

Before you go

Three things worth checking for this journey, each with the guide that covers it.

  1. Keep small notes for the ride

Cash and in-app card both work, but some drivers prefer cash. Small notes help with change or a cancelled booking.

  2. Agree the fare before you get in

Taxis have no meters, so settle the price for the whole car first. Book through Grab and the price is fixed before you ride.

    Taxi, Grab and Bolt
  3. Have a rain plan

Most rain is a short afternoon squall, but multi-day rain can flood low stretches of the east coast road. Wet roads hit bikes hardest, so keep a backup way to get there.
