No direct flight from Australia to Koh Samui. Best routes via Singapore or Bangkok from Perth, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane: 10-14 hours, from AU$473 return.

No airline flies direct from Australia to Koh Samui, so every trip has one change of plane. The two practical routes are via Singapore (Australia to Changi, then Scoot to Samui in about 2 hours) and via Bangkok (a nonstop to Suvarnabhumi, then Bangkok Airways in 75-95 minutes). Door to door that is roughly 10-11 hours from Perth and 12-14 hours from Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane. Return fares start near AU$473 (~310 USD) from Perth with Scoot and AU$900-1,500 (~585-975 USD) from the east coast.

Key takeaways (checked 1 October 2026)

  • Perth is the closest city: about 5 hours to Singapore, then about 2 hours to Samui.
  • Scoot flies Singapore to Samui 4 times a day (28 a week). Bangkok Airways also flies it, but pauses Singapore from 25 October 2026 to 28 March 2027.
  • Bangkok is the other hub: Thai Airways, Qantas and Jetstar fly nonstop from Australia, then Bangkok Airways covers the last 75-95 minutes.
  • One booking protects you if a flight is late and checks your bag through. Separate tickets save money but add 1-2 hours and some risk.
  • Australians enter visa-free for 30 days from 15 September 2026 and must file the Thailand Digital Arrival Card first.

Is There a Direct Flight from Australia to Koh Samui?

No. Samui Airport (USM) has a 2,100 m runway that takes only narrow-body jets and turboprops, so no widebody from Australia can land there (see Koh Samui Airport). Any site selling a “direct” Perth or Sydney to Samui fare is selling a connection. The answer for the common search “perth to koh samui direct flights” is therefore no, as it is for Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.

Route Australia leg Samui leg Total (my estimate)
Via Singapore 5h15 Perth, ~8h Sydney/Melbourne/Brisbane Scoot ~2 h 10-14 h
Via Bangkok 7 h Perth, 9-9.5 h east coast Bangkok Airways 75-95 min 11-14 h
Via Kuala Lumpur ~5h35 Perth KL to Bangkok, then Samui 13-16 h

Totals add a 2-3 hour connection. Flight times come from the aggregator listings cited in each section below. The complete network of Samui routes is in direct flights to Koh Samui.

Is Singapore the Best Way to Fly to Koh Samui from Australia?

For most Australians, yes. Singapore has nonstop flights from every major Australian city, and Scoot’s Singapore to Samui service runs 4 times a day, 28 a week, on a 112-seat Embraer E190-E2, about 2 hours (Mainly Miles, May 2025; Scoot says “about 2 hours”). Departures from Changi were 07:00, 10:00, 16:00 and 17:35 in the 2025 schedule, so check your dates.

Bangkok Airways flies the same sector on an A319, about 14 weekly until 24 October 2026. It then suspends Singapore to Samui from 25 October 2026 to 28 March 2027 (AeroRoutes, 21 April 2026; aeroTELEGRAPH, 3 June 2026). Outside that window you can pick either. Inside it, Scoot is the only airline on the route, so the Qantas and Bangkok Airways codeshare that used to cover Singapore to Samui does not apply in winter.

Scoot’s Basic fare has no checked bag, and seats and food cost extra. Value and Flex fares add 20 kg. Compare the total with your bag, as covered in international flights to Koh Samui.

Changi is the usual connecting hub for Scoot to Samui

Time zones help here. Perth and Singapore share UTC+8, so a flight that leaves Perth at night lands in the early morning with no clock shift. Samui is 1 hour behind, so a 2-hour flight shows as 1 hour on the clock.

Should You Connect in Bangkok to Reach Koh Samui?

Connect in Bangkok when you want a full-service carrier the whole way, or when Singapore prices are high. Thai Airways, Qantas and Jetstar fly nonstop from Australia to Suvarnabhumi (BKK), then Bangkok Airways runs about 21 daily flights to Samui in 75-95 minutes for 2,300-6,600 THB (~66-189 USD) one-way on its own (see flights to Koh Samui).

Bangkok is the better hub for single-ticket buyers. Qantas has sold Bangkok Airways seats since a codeshare agreement that lets Qantas customers “fly direct with Qantas between Australia and Bangkok, connecting to or from Qantas codeshare flights operated by Bangkok Airways” (Qantas newsroom). Thai Airways puts its TG code on Bangkok Airways flights between Bangkok and Samui, for example TG5926 (AeroRoutes, January 2023), and sells Sydney to Samui as one itinerary, from AU$1,447 (~940 USD) return on its site in this search.

Minimum connection time is the catch. Bangkok Airways’ minimum at Suvarnabhumi is generally quoted at 75 minutes on a through ticket (third-party airport guides; confirm with your airline). With your bag checked through you transit via a separate immigration area to the domestic gates, which takes 10-30 minutes. Plan 2-3 hours. Landing in Bangkok late can mean an overnight, so a morning arrival from Perth or an early arrival from the east coast works best.

Does Kuala Lumpur or Bali Help?

Rarely. Perth to Kuala Lumpur is nonstop in about 5h35-5h53 on Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia and Batik Air (FlightConnections via search, 2026), but there is no scheduled Kuala Lumpur to Samui flight confirmed, so you would still change again in Bangkok or Singapore. The only direct option is Berjaya Air’s all-business charter from Subang, 3 a week from 22 April 2026, at RM3,996 return (about 32,000 THB, ~914 USD; Berjaya press release, 11 March 2026). It suits few travellers.

Bali has no scheduled flight to Samui in the airline dataset used for this site, so it only fits if you want a Bali stop on the way. It adds a connection rather than removing one. Use it only if the fare is far lower and you accept a longer trip.

Should You Buy One Through Ticket or Separate Tickets?

Buy one through ticket if you are tight on time or carry a checked bag. A single booking checks your bag to Samui, keeps you airside in Bangkok or Singapore, and gets you rebooked free if the first flight is late. Separate tickets can cut the fare but you must collect bags, clear immigration and check in again.

At Changi that process is spelled out: Scoot does not check bags through on separate tickets, so you collect them, clear immigration and customs, and re-check in; through check-in applies to itineraries on the same booking (Scoot and Singapore Airlines guidance, as reported by Tripadvisor and Quora threads). Leave 3-4 hours on separate tickets.

Which airlines can sell the whole trip on one ticket? Qantas (codeshare on Bangkok Airways via Bangkok, and via Singapore outside the winter suspension) and Thai Airways (TG-coded Bangkok Airways flights). Wikipedia’s summary of Bangkok Airways also lists Emirates, Etihad, British Airways, Lufthansa Group and EVA Air among codeshare partners, with 70-plus interline agreements. I did not find a published interline between Jetstar or Scoot and Bangkok Airways, so treat those combinations as separate tickets unless your booking site shows one booking reference.

How Do You Fly from Perth to Koh Samui?

The best route from Perth is Scoot via Singapore: about 10-11 hours elapsed and the cheapest, from AU$473 (~310 USD) return (Scoot fare listing, Oct 2026). Perth to Singapore is nonstop on Qantas, Singapore Airlines, Scoot and Jetstar at about 5h15 (Trip.com; FlightConnections). Rome2rio lists Perth to Samui with Scoot at about 10h45.

Via Bangkok, Thai Airways and Jetstar each fly Perth to Suvarnabhumi about 7 times a week in about 7 hours (FlightConnections via search), then Bangkok Airways to Samui. Total elapsed is about 10h30-11h30. Perth has the strongest argument for Singapore: the Scoot flights from Changi to Samui are frequent, and Perth shares Singapore’s time zone.

One aggregator example shows 14h15 outbound with 1 stop, a long layover, so pick connections under 3 hours. See Samui Airport for arrival.

How Do You Fly from Sydney to Koh Samui?

Fly Sydney to Singapore with Qantas, Singapore Airlines or Scoot (about 8h25 on average, Trip.com), then Scoot to Samui: about 12-13 hours elapsed. Or fly nonstop to Bangkok with Thai Airways (14 a week) or Qantas (about 6 a week) in 9h20-9h50 (FlightConnections via search), then Bangkok Airways: about 13-14 hours.

Sydney to Samui fares run from about AU$623 (~405 USD) return on Scoot (Skyscanner AU, Oct 2026) to AU$1,447 (~940 USD) on Thai Airways through to Samui. Bangkok is 3 hours behind Sydney in standard time and 4 hours behind during daylight saving, which starts 4 October 2026.

How Do You Fly from Melbourne to Koh Samui?

From Melbourne the shortest elapsed time is via Singapore: about 8 hours to Changi, then Scoot, 12-13 hours total. Or Thai Airways (14 a week) and Jetstar (5 a week, JQ29) fly nonstop to Bangkok in about 9h30, then Bangkok Airways, 13-14 hours (FlightsFrom via search, 2026).

Scoot is the cheapest, from AU$678 (~440 USD) return; Qantas from about AU$1,073 (~700 USD) and Singapore Airlines from AU$1,145 (~745 USD), per Cheapflights and Kayak listings. November was the cheapest month in Kayak’s data, at about AU$780 (~505 USD) return on average.

How Do You Fly from Brisbane to Koh Samui?

Brisbane has no Scoot nonstop to Singapore, so you fly Qantas or Singapore Airlines to Changi (about 8h20) and connect onto Scoot or, outside the winter pause, Bangkok Airways: 12-13 hours. The alternative is Jetstar nonstop to Bangkok, 3 a week since 13 December 2024 (Jetstar newsroom), at 8 to 9 hours, with Thai Airways also listing Brisbane to Bangkok.

Fares are higher. Trip.com listed returns from AU$902 (~585 USD) with Jetstar via Bangkok, Qantas from about AU$1,026 (~665 USD) and Singapore Airlines from AU$1,147 (~745 USD). Singapore appears on 97 percent of one-stop itineraries on Cheapflights.

What About Adelaide and Darwin?

Adelaide has only Singapore Airlines nonstop to Singapore, about 10 flights a week (FlightConnections via search, June 2026), and Darwin has Qantas and Singapore Airlines nonstop, also about 10 a week (August 2026). Neither city has Scoot or Jetstar nonstops to Singapore, so go via Singapore with Singapore Airlines or connect in Perth or Sydney.

How Much Do Flights Cost and When Are They Cheapest?

Expect AU$470-700 (~305-455 USD) return on Scoot via Singapore and AU$1,000-1,500 (~650-975 USD) on full-service carriers. These are aggregator from-fares seen on 1 October 2026, not guarantees. AUD is converted at roughly 0.65 USD.

From Cheapest seen (return) Fuller-service seen (return)
Perth AU$473 (~310 USD) Scoot AU$900-1,100
Sydney AU$623 (~405 USD) Scoot AU$1,447 (~940 USD) Thai
Melbourne AU$678 (~440 USD) Scoot AU$1,073-1,145
Brisbane AU$902 (~585 USD) Jetstar via BKK AU$1,026-1,147

By season, Kayak’s data put November as the cheapest month from Melbourne (about AU$780 return) and August the cheapest from Brisbane (about AU$1,182). Expect higher fares in the December to January Australian school holidays than in these low months. For when to buy, see when to book and seasonal flights. The Thai leg is about 2,300-6,600 THB (~66-189 USD) one-way alone.

Do Australians Need a Visa for Koh Samui?

No, for a tourist stay. Australian passport holders can enter Thailand visa-free for up to 30 days from 15 September 2026, down from 60, for tourism only (VisasNews, Thaiger). Every visitor must also file the free Thailand Digital Arrival Card at tdac.immigration.go.th within 72 hours before arrival. Your passport needs at least 6 months’ validity. Full details are in the visa guide.

Where you clear immigration depends on the ticket. A Singapore flight lands at the Samui international terminal and you clear there. A through ticket via Bangkok usually clears in Bangkok, with bags checked through. After landing, taxis to Chaweng and Bophut are about 500 THB (~14 USD); see airport to Chaweng.

FAQ

Is there a direct flight from Perth to Koh Samui?

No. Perth to Samui always needs one change. The shortest option is Scoot via Singapore (Perth to Singapore about 5h15, then about 2 hours), about 10-11 hours elapsed. Thai Airways and Jetstar fly nonstop to Bangkok in about 7 hours, then Bangkok Airways.

How long does it take to fly from Sydney to Koh Samui?

About 12-14 hours of elapsed travel including a 2-3 hour connection. Via Singapore: about 8h25 plus the Scoot leg of about 2 hours. Via Bangkok: 9h20-9h50 nonstop plus 75-95 minutes to Samui. These are my own sums from aggregator times.

Does Bangkok Airways fly from Singapore to Koh Samui in winter 2026/27?

No. Bangkok Airways suspends Singapore to Samui from 25 October 2026 to 28 March 2027 (aeroTELEGRAPH, 3 June 2026). Scoot continues with 4 daily flights, 28 a week, so Singapore remains workable. If you need Bangkok Airways connections, route via Bangkok instead.

Should I book Australia to Koh Samui on one ticket?

Yes if you have a checked bag or a short connection. One booking checks your bag through and protects a missed connection. Qantas and Thai Airways both sell Bangkok Airways flights on their own tickets. Separate tickets need 3-4 hours and you re-check in. Compare the savings against that risk.

What is the minimum connection time in Bangkok for Samui?

Bangkok Airways’ minimum at Suvarnabhumi is generally quoted at 75 minutes on a through ticket, but plan 2-3 hours. Separate tickets need 3-4 hours as you must collect bags and clear immigration. Confirm the minimum for your exact itinerary with the airline.

Checklist

Before you go

Three things worth checking for this journey, each with the guide that covers it.

  1. Book ahead for peak dates

Seats rarely sell out outside Christmas, New Year and Songkran, but the cheap fares go first. Book flights and peak-season boats well ahead.

    When to book
  2. Leave time for a self-transfer

On separate tickets a late first flight is your problem, not the airline's. Allow three to four hours in Bangkok.

    International connections
  3. Check the bag allowance

Budget airlines usually charge extra for checked bags, while Bangkok Airways economy includes 20 kg. Compare the final price with bags.
