No nonstop to Koh Samui: Frankfurt to Samui takes about 15-17 h via Bangkok, from about 380 EUR one-way. Routes, one-ticket partners and fares for 2026.

No airline flies from Europe to Koh Samui nonstop, so every trip is two flights: a long-haul to Bangkok, then a 1h05-1h25 Bangkok Airways hop to Samui. From Frankfurt expect about 15-17 hours door to gate, and fares from about 380 EUR (~412 USD) one-way (Skyscanner, checked 1 October 2026). Nonstops to Bangkok leave from Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich and Vienna.

Key takeaways (checked 1 October 2026)

  • Samui’s 2,100 m runway takes only narrow-body jets and turboprops, so there is no long-haul nonstop.
  • Munich, Zurich, Vienna and Frankfurt have nonstops to Bangkok. Berlin, Hamburg, Dusseldorf, Madrid and Barcelona do not (Madrid: see Spain below).
  • Lufthansa, SWISS and Emirates codeshare with Bangkok Airways, so one ticket and bags checked through to Samui (USM) are possible.
  • Plan 2-3 hours for the Bangkok change; the quoted minimum is about 75 minutes.
  • Thai Airways is adding Paris, Munich and Zurich flights this winter.

What Is the Fastest Way From Frankfurt to Koh Samui?

The fastest way is a nonstop to Bangkok (Suvarnabhumi, BKK), then Bangkok Airways to Samui. The nonstop takes 10h40-11h20 (aggregator schedules, 2026), the Samui hop 1h05-1h25, plus a 2-3 hour change: roughly 15-17 hours total. Gulf, Istanbul and Helsinki routings add hours but sometimes cost less.

Route from Frankfurt Air time (approx.) Total with change
Nonstop to Bangkok, Bangkok Airways on 12-13 h 15-17 h
Via Istanbul (Turkish) 13-14 h 18-22 h
Via Doha or Dubai 15-16 h 19-24 h

Air times add the nonstop or hub legs and the Samui hop; totals are my estimate with typical layovers, since airlines publish no through-times. Bangkok to Samui fares run 2,300-6,600 THB (~66-189 USD) one-way when bought alone (OutThailand, 2026).

Is a Nonstop to Bangkok Plus Bangkok Airways the Best Route?

Yes for most travellers: one change, the shortest total time and the most schedule choice. Thai Airways, Lufthansa (Munich), SWISS, Austrian and Condor fly nonstop to Bangkok. Then Bangkok Airways flies about 21 times a day to Samui (see flights from Bangkok).

Nonstop carriers, as listed by aggregators in 2026:

  • Frankfurt: Thai Airways (14 a week) and Condor (7 a week), per FlightConnections. Lufthansa has no Frankfurt nonstop to Bangkok in the schedules I found.
  • Munich: Lufthansa LH772 daily, 22:20 to 13:45, 10h25 (Flightradar24 listings, 2026); Thai Airways to 10 a week from 16 December 2026 (Skift, 17 September 2026).
  • Zurich: SWISS about 12 a week (July 2026 listing); Thai to 11 a week from 16 January 2027.
  • Vienna: Austrian about 9 a week, 10h15; EVA Air also flies it.

Condor lists fares from 199.99 EUR (~217 USD) one-way as part of a round trip (Condor, 1 October 2026). Thai one-way fares from Frankfurt start near 554 USD (~510 EUR) on aggregators. Bangkok Airways is the only Samui operator; see Bangkok Airways to Koh Samui.

When Does a Gulf Hub Make Sense?

A Gulf hub makes sense when you fly from a city with no Bangkok nonstop, or want a lower fare and accept 4-8 hours more. Qatar Airways (Doha), Emirates (Dubai) and Etihad (Abu Dhabi) all serve Bangkok many times daily. Emirates has a codeshare on Bangkok Airways flights to Samui.

Doha to Frankfurt is 6h40 and Doha to Bangkok 6h55 (Trip.com, 2026), so air time is about 13h35 before the layover. Emirates announced its codeshare with Bangkok Airways on 19 Southeast Asia routes including Samui; it lets you book Europe to Samui on one Emirates ticket (Emirates, accessed 1 October 2026). Qatar and Etihad are listed as partners on Wikipedia and traveller forums report bag check-through to Samui, but I could not confirm a current codeshare on their sites: ask for the Samui tag at check-in.

Is Istanbul a Good Stop on the Way?

Istanbul suits travellers from Spain and smaller German airports: Turkish Airlines flies to Bangkok from Istanbul in about 9h10 (Trip.com, 2026) and connects from most European cities. Total air time from Frankfurt is about 12-13 hours, with layovers usually 1-3 hours.

I found no Turkish and Bangkok Airways codeshare for Samui. Wikipedia lists Turkish among partners, but treat that as unconfirmed. Two options: buy Turkish to Bangkok and a separate Bangkok Airways ticket, or have an agent price it as one itinerary. On separate tickets, your bag stops in Bangkok (see below).

What About Helsinki?

Helsinki works if you are flying Nordic-style routings or want a daytime-friendly connection. Finnair adds a fourth daily Helsinki to Bangkok flight this winter, with 25 weekly Thailand flights in total (Scandasia, 2026), and Bangkok Airways codeshares with Finnair (AeroRoutes, October 2022).

Finnair also restores Krabi on Mondays and Thursdays. From Krabi you can reach Samui by Bangkok Airways, but flights are limited; see Phuket and Krabi to Koh Samui. From Germany the Helsinki detour is rarely faster than a Bangkok nonstop.

Can I Buy One Ticket With Bags Through to Samui?

Yes, with Lufthansa Group airlines and Emirates. Lufthansa started its Bangkok Airways codeshare in June 2024 and SWISS on 3 July 2024; both cover Bangkok to Samui (AeroRoutes, SWISS; AeroRoutes, Lufthansa, 2024). Austrian lists a Bangkok Airways partnership on its own site, and Finnair has one too. On one ticket, bags are normally tagged to USM.

Book on the European airline’s site and the Samui flight appears as a normal connection. Bangkok Airways’ own site says only single tickets with the onward segment qualify for check-through (reported on FlyerTalk). Separate tickets mean you collect bags, clear immigration and re-check. Whether you clear immigration in Bangkok or Samui on a through ticket varies, so ask the check-in agent.

One warning if you connect through Singapore instead: Bangkok Airways pauses its Singapore to Samui flights from 25 October 2026 to 28 March 2027 (aeroTELEGRAPH, 3 June 2026). See international flights to Koh Samui. Departing from Britain? See flights from the UK to Koh Samui.

How Long Should the Connection in Bangkok Be?

Allow 2-3 hours on one ticket. Third-party guides quote a Bangkok Airways minimum of 75 minutes for international to domestic, and the IATA standard at BKK is 120 minutes (2026 connection guides). Long-haul flights often land 20-40 minutes late, so 75 minutes is a gamble.

On separate tickets leave 3-4 hours: you pass immigration, collect bags, then check in again. Late long-haul arrivals can leave you without a same-day Samui seat, so check the last Bangkok Airways departure. More on the airport: Koh Samui airport.

What Is the Best Route From Germany?

From Germany, fly nonstop to Bangkok from Frankfurt (Thai, Condor) or Munich (Lufthansa, Thai), then on to Samui. Munich is the strongest nonstop hub for a through ticket with Lufthansa. Berlin, Hamburg and Dusseldorf have no Bangkok nonstop in the sources I found.

Condor sells Bangkok from Berlin, Hamburg, Dusseldorf and other airports (Condor, 1 October 2026), and Lufthansa Group reaches Munich or Frankfurt first. Expect one extra change and 2-4 more hours. Skyscanner shows Frankfurt to Samui from about 412 USD (~380 EUR) one-way, with November the cheapest month.

What Is the Best Route From Austria?

From Vienna, Austrian flies nonstop to Bangkok about 9 times a week, around 10h15 (aggregators, 2026). Austrian lists a Bangkok Airways partnership and belongs to the Lufthansa Group, whose codeshare covers Bangkok to Samui; confirm Samui on your booking. Total time to Samui is about 14-16 hours.

What Is the Best Route From Switzerland?

From Zurich, SWISS flies about 12 times a week to Bangkok in around 10h55, and Thai Airways adds more from 16 January 2027. SWISS codeshares on Bangkok Airways to Samui since 3 July 2024, so a single SWISS ticket is possible. Total: about 14-16 hours.

What Is the Best Route From Spain?

From Madrid and Barcelona there is no confirmed current nonstop, so connect via Doha, Dubai or Istanbul. Via Dubai is about 15h40, Istanbul 16h20 and Doha 17h to Bangkok (aggregator listings, 2026), plus the Samui hop and layovers: expect 20-24 hours.

Iberojet launched Madrid to Bangkok on 30 May 2024 (Ladevi), but its booking page showed no fares on 1 October 2026, so check it first. Emirates’ codeshare gives a one-ticket route to Samui via Dubai; Qatar and Turkish are separate-ticket options unless you confirm otherwise.

What About Paris and Amsterdam?

Both have Thai Airways nonstops. Paris goes to 14 flights a week from 1 December 2026 and Amsterdam stays at 7 a week (Skift, 17 September 2026). Connect to Bangkok Airways the same way as from Germany; Paris to Samui is about 15-17 hours.

When Are Fares Cheapest?

November is the cheapest month on Skyscanner for Frankfurt to Samui, from about 412 USD (~380 EUR) one-way, and summer holidays push fares up (Trip.com, 2026). December to January and Easter cost more. These are aggregator lows; real prices vary by date. Samui seasons: seasonal flights.

Season Fare level (my estimate)
November, February-March Lowest
July-August High (summer holidays)
20 December-6 January Highest

Typical return fares from Germany to Samui run roughly 650-1,300 EUR (~707-1,413 USD): an estimate, not a quoted fare. All timetables change each season; flight-routes list: Koh Samui flight routes.

Do I Need a Visa?

German, Austrian, Swiss and Spanish passport holders can enter visa-free for tourism. Since 15 September 2026 the visa-exempt stay is 30 days, and you must file the free Thailand Digital Arrival Card online within 3 days before arrival. Details and updates: Thailand visa guide. Passports need 6 months’ validity.

After landing, taxis to Chaweng or Bophut are quick; see how to get to Koh Samui for other routes.

FAQ

Is there a direct flight from Germany to Koh Samui?

No. Samui’s runway takes only narrow-body aircraft, so flights from Germany go via Bangkok, a Gulf hub or Istanbul. The usual routing is a nonstop to Bangkok from Frankfurt or Munich, then a 1h05-1h25 Bangkok Airways flight. Total time is about 15-17 hours.

How long is the flight from Frankfurt to Koh Samui?

About 15-17 hours in total: 10h40-11h20 to Bangkok, a 2-3 hour change and 1h05-1h25 to Samui. Via Doha, Dubai or Istanbul expect 18-24 hours. Airlines do not publish through-times, so these totals are my estimates from the leg times.

Which airlines fly from Vienna or Zurich to Koh Samui?

None directly. Austrian flies Vienna to Bangkok and SWISS flies Zurich to Bangkok, both nonstop; Bangkok Airways then flies to Samui. SWISS has had a codeshare with Bangkok Airways since 3 July 2024, so one ticket is possible. Check Austrian’s Samui listing when booking.

Will my bag go through to Samui?

On a single ticket, yes, normally to USM. Lufthansa, SWISS and Emirates codeshare with Bangkok Airways. On separate tickets you collect the bag in Bangkok, clear immigration and check in again, so leave 3-4 hours. Confirm the tag at check-in.

Is it cheaper to fly to Bangkok and book Samui separately?

Sometimes, but you lose bag check-through and protection if the first flight is late. Bangkok to Samui is 2,300-6,600 THB (~66-189 USD) bought alone (OutThailand, 2026). Compare the through price with the two-ticket total.

Checklist

Before you go

Three things worth checking for this journey, each with the guide that covers it.

  1. Book ahead for peak dates

Seats rarely sell out outside Christmas, New Year and Songkran, but the cheap fares go first. Book flights and peak-season boats well ahead.

    When to book
  2. Leave time for a self-transfer

On separate tickets a late first flight is your problem, not the airline's. Allow three to four hours in Bangkok.

    International connections
  3. Check the bag allowance

Budget airlines usually charge extra for checked bags, while Bangkok Airways economy includes 20 kg. Compare the final price with bags.
