Bolt barely works on Koh Samui: Grab is the app here. Chaweng to Lamai costs about 250-400 THB by app or taxi. Night, airport and no-driver fixes.

Bolt barely operates on Koh Samui, so do not plan a trip around it. Bolt’s own Thailand city list names Surat Thani but not the island, and 2026 sources call it patchy. Grab is the app that works here. Chaweng to Lamai (about 20-30 minutes) costs roughly 250-400 THB (~7-11 USD) by app or taxi.

Key takeaways

  • Install Grab first. Bolt may show cars in the app, but many drivers never accept an island ride.
  • A Bolt fare, when it works, is reported 10-25% under Grab on Thai routes, so Chaweng to Lamai would be about 200-350 THB (an estimate, not a published tariff).
  • Neither app picks up at the airport terminal. Use the taxi counter on arrival.

Does Bolt Operate on Koh Samui?

Barely. Bolt’s Thailand cities page lists Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Krabi, Surat Thani and others, but not Koh Samui (checked 1 October 2026). Conflicting evidence exists: a July 2026 Thailand Knowledge comparison says Grab has stronger coverage and Bolt is patchy on Samui, and a September 2026 Pattaya guide lists Koh Samui among Bolt cities.

A Tripadvisor Koh Samui forum thread has a Destination Expert saying both apps work but availability is “hit and miss”. Older threads say there is no Bolt on the island. Bolt also faces a Thai certification review, per a TTR Weekly report of 14 May 2026, but says it operates as usual.

I found no dated first-hand Bolt ride on Samui in 2026. Treat it as a bonus quote. Overview: taxi, Grab and Bolt guide and getting around.

Bolt from Chaweng to Lamai

If a driver does accept, a Bolt ride from Chaweng to Lamai should cost about 200-350 THB (~5.50-10 USD). That is my estimate (Bolt reported 10-25% under Grab); no source publishes a Samui Bolt tariff.

Ride types on Bolt in Thailand include Economy, Bolt, Bolt Comfort, XL and a motorbike option, per the Pattaya guide above. Expect the basic car at most. Payment: card in the app, cash depending on location; the fare shows first.

Grab from Chaweng to Lamai

Grab is the working app. A Chaweng to Lamai ride is about 250-300 THB (~7-8.50 USD) in normal traffic, with the fare shown upfront. It rises in rain and the 5-7 PM peak. Driver supply is best in Chaweng, Bophut and Lamai, thinner on the west coast. More: Grab on Koh Samui.

Carry small notes: some Samui drivers prefer cash. Uber does not operate on the island; inDrive is sometimes mentioned (check your pickup).

Street Taxi from Chaweng to Lamai

Street taxis are unmetered, so agree the price before you get in. The site’s fare table gives 250-400 THB (~7-11 USD) for Chaweng to Lamai, the same range as Grab. Counter 20-30% below the first quote. Other pairs: fares by route.

Does Bolt Work at Night or at the Airport?

Not reliably in either place. After about 10 PM, driver supply drops for every app on Samui, and Bolt, with fewer cars, drops first. Songthaews mostly stop by 9-10 PM, so a night plan needs a taxi or hotel call.

At Samui Airport (USM) neither Grab nor Bolt may use the terminal pickup zone. The airport taxi counter holds pickup rights, about 500 THB (~14 USD) to Chaweng. If you order an app car, you meet the driver on the public road outside. Details are in the airport transfers guide.

What to Do When No Driver Accepts

Wait about 5 minutes, then cancel and re-request once, and open Grab in parallel. If both stay empty, move to a street taxi: a main-road rank or your hotel desk. By day, a songthaew costs 30-100 THB (~1-3 USD) a person.

For a fixed time such as a flight, pre-book a hotel or private transfer instead.

FAQ

Does Koh Samui have Bolt?

Barely. Bolt lists Surat Thani but not Koh Samui on its cities page, and 2026 guides and forums call Samui coverage patchy. Use Grab first and treat Bolt as a second quote.

Does Koh Samui have Uber?

No. Uber does not operate on Koh Samui. The apps travellers mention are Grab (the main one), Bolt (patchy) and sometimes inDrive.

Is Bolt cheaper than Grab or a taxi?

On Thai routes Bolt is reported 10-25% cheaper than Grab (Thailand Knowledge, July 2026). Cheaper only counts if a driver accepts.

Can I pay Bolt with cash or card?

Bolt Thailand offers card payment in the app and, depending on location, cash or other methods. On Samui carry cash too, since some drivers cancel card-only rides or are short of change.

What is the best taxi app for Koh Samui?

Grab. It has the most drivers on the island, shows a fixed fare before you confirm, and works from hotels to the airport road. Keep a street taxi or your hotel desk as the fallback at night and on the west coast.

Checklist

Before you go

Three things worth checking for this journey, each with the guide that covers it.

  1. Keep small notes for the ride

Cash and in-app card both work, but some drivers prefer cash. Small notes help with change or a cancelled booking.

    Grab on Koh Samui
  2. Agree the fare before you get in

Taxis have no meters, so settle the price for the whole car first. Book through Grab and the price is fixed before you ride.

    Taxi, Grab and Bolt
  3. Have a rain plan

Most rain is a short afternoon squall, but multi-day rain can flood low stretches of the east coast road. Wet roads hit bikes hardest, so keep a backup way to get there.
