10 companies ranked from 1,594 reviews read, checked October 2026

Ten Koh Samui scooter shops scored from 1,594 reviews: top picks, 150-450 THB day rates, no-passport deposits, damage claims and insurance gaps.

CHANG Samui Rentals is the safest all-round pick among ten rated Koh Samui scooter shops (8.5 of 10 from 187 reviews), with Tonton Samui Rental (8.4) and Samui Rental Service (8.2) close behind. Expat Rentals Maenam tops the board at 8.6 but from only 50 reviews, so read that score as indicative. CHANG suits riders who refuse to hand over a passport and want hotel delivery, Tonton suits French and English speakers who want a newer ADV or XMax brought to the villa, and Samui Rental Service suits Russian speakers and anyone adding a car. The two lowest scores, Id Scooter Rental (6.6) and Hakuna Matata Rent (6.3), come from reports of weak brakes, worn tyres and extra charges.

Method: 10 shops rated, 1,594 reviews read one by one from Google Maps and Tripadvisor, checked October 2026.

Key takeaways

  • Island median for a 110-125cc automatic is 150-300 THB (~4.50-8.50 USD) a day, 300-450 THB (~8.50-13 USD) for a 150-160cc. Eight of ten shops quote inside or just above those bands.
  • No shop’s rule requires the original passport: eight take a passport photo, and Thai-Moto and Samui Rental Service list passport only as an alternative to cash. Cash deposits run 0-3,000 THB (~0-86 USD), up to 5,000 THB for a 160cc at some shops.
  • Insurance is usually absent or statutory medical cover (Por Ror Bor) only. The renter pays damage at part prices, so the handover video matters more than any policy.
  • The sharpest damage-claim complaints cluster at Thai-Moto and Hakuna Matata Rent; the sharpest bike-condition complaints at Hakuna Matata Rent and Id Scooter Rental.
  • Helmet fine since 1 June 2025: up to 2,000 THB (~57 USD) per person. A motorcycle licence plus an IDP is the legal requirement, see the scooter rental guide.

How Are the Shops Rated?

Each shop is scored 0-10 on ten categories: bike condition, price against the island median, quoted price versus price paid, deposit terms, insurance and excess, damage-claim fairness, delivery, staff and English, breakdown help, and booking ease. The overall is a weighted mean. Price and damage-claim fairness weigh 1.2, insurance and deposit 1.0, delivery and service lower.

The scores come from the shops’ Google reviews for their Samui listing, plus Tripadvisor reviews where a page exists, plus each shop’s own published terms. A company claim counts only when a renter or a third party confirms it. Reviews are paraphrased, never quoted, and the page reports what reviews say, not what we rented. Shops under 80 reviews read carry a small-sample label, because a score from 42 or 50 reviews can move a lot with a few more; Raf’s Affordable Rentals and Expat Rentals Maenam are in that group. No shop paid, lent a bike or supplied a link: this site earns nothing from bookings.

Left out: shops with too few readable reviews or no findable Google listing. Price, deposit and delivery terms are as published or reported in October 2026 and change without notice.

Expat Rentals Maenam

Expat Rentals Maenam scores 8.6, the top of the board, from 50 reviews read, so the small-sample label applies. It rents a small fleet of near-new Honda Click 160s from Maenam, quoted at about 200 THB a day against a 300-450 THB island median for a 150-160cc.

Reviews report the strengths clearly. 28 mention near-new bikes with two helmets and a phone mount, 16 call the price the cheapest for a 160cc, and 20 of 50 praise free delivery to hotels, the pier and the airport, with the owner, named Dean, bringing bikes himself in the evening and in rain. 12 reviews say the passport is never held, with no deposit or about 2,000 THB cash. 4 report accident repairs billed at the real dealer cost, the rest refunded.

Watch-outs: no insurance is stated anywhere, booking is by WhatsApp only with no shop to browse (2 of 8 booking mentions are negative), and one reported 3-day minimum applies. The fleet is small, so reserve ahead. Best for a week or more in Maenam and the north coast. Not for anyone who wants a walk-in shop or written insurance terms.

CHANG Samui Rentals

CHANG Samui Rentals scores 8.5 from 187 reviews read, and 184 of the 184 Google texts in the pool date from the last 15 months. It rents Click 125 and 160, PCX, ADV 160, Aerox 155 and MSX 125 from Bophut and Chaweng, from 200 THB a day for a Click 125, 300 THB for a Click 160 or PCX and 450 THB for an ADV 160, at or under the island median.

Reviews report no deposit and no passport held, with a passport photo sent by WhatsApp: about 70 of 187 renters say so. Free hotel delivery needs a 2 to 7 day minimum depending on the area, and 55 reviews praise delivery within 30 to 60 minutes of the first message, with keys left at reception on return. 12 of the damage mentions are positive: a scratch fixed for 500 THB against 1,500 quoted, crashes waived or charged little. 9 reviews report a flat tyre or dead battery solved within the hour; one renter was told to deal with a flat alone.

Watch-outs: no insurance terms are published, one report of dirty or wrong-size helmets, one extra-key charge, and only 3 of 184 texts are below five stars, so there is little critical evidence to test it against. Best for passport-free week-plus rentals with delivery. Not for riders who want a written policy or instant card booking.

Tonton Samui Rental

Tonton Samui Rental scores 8.4 from 193 reviews read, with 132 Tripadvisor ratings averaging 4.9 beside 449 on Google. It runs about 80 vehicles from Bophut, mostly scooters (about 85 percent of reviews): Click 125 at 250 THB, Nmax 350-400, PCX 400 and ADV 350 at 900, with a 3-day minimum.

The deposit is 2,000 THB cash plus a passport photo, passport not held; 10 renters confirm no passport and 12 say the cash came back without hassle. 35 reviews praise free hotel and airport delivery in a daytime window, and 12 report a replacement scooter within 10 to 30 minutes after a fault. 55 reviews call the fleet new and clean. The listing claims full insurance on vehicles, but no excess is published and only one renter mentions it being explained.

The main watch-out is service tone: 5 of about 95 service mentions describe an aggressive or shouting owner, 3 of them after a battery fault. One renter was first charged for old damage, and the claim vanished once they showed a handover video. Best for French and English speakers wanting a newer ADV or XMax delivered. Not for long-rental haggling or riders who want insurance terms upfront.

Samui Rental Service

Samui Rental Service scores 8.2 from 178 reviews read. It is a Bophut and Chaweng shop near the airport with about 50 units: Nmax, XMax, Aerox 155, Click 160 and ADV 150, plus cars. Its scooter day rate sits at the island median, 150-300 THB, though no shop price list for scooters was found.

Reviews are strong on bikes and people: 50 praise new or like-new scooters, new helmets and visors, and 100 mention service, with Russian, English and Thai spoken, a road and parking briefing, and a helpful owner. The deposit is 3,000 THB cash or a passport (14 mentions, no negatives); renters report cash accepted, passport not held, and the deposit returned in full, even after a scratch. 10 mention damage handled with a handover video, such as 400 THB for a curb scratch.

Watch-outs: the website says delivery is free in office hours, yet 3 of 25 delivery mentions report 500-700 THB fees; hours are 10:00-17:00, awkward for early flights; one car reservation was cancelled the night before. Insurance is explained for cars but no scooter excess is published. Best for Russian speakers, month-long rentals and a car plus a bike from one shop. Not for early arrivals.

AuBanan Rentals

AuBanan Rentals scores 8.1 from 194 reviews read, almost all from 2026 since the Lamai shop opened in July 2024. A German owner, Randy, runs Honda Click 125, 150 and 160, ADV 160, Forza 300 and smaller Fino and Fazzio models. Click 125 is 250-270 THB, Click 160 350 and ADV 160 500, slightly above the island median.

It has the strongest deposit terms in the sample: no deposit, no passport held, only a passport photo and proof of the return flight, with an optional non-refundable 50 percent prepayment. 25 renters stress that. About 60 describe the scooters as new or like new, and 12 praise the brakes by name. 40 delivery reviews are all positive, with fully fuelled bikes arriving even from 25 minutes away; 4 describe a damage settlement as fair, using an itemised part price list.

Watch-outs: no insurance terms are published, there is a 5-day minimum on the website, delivery costs a small fee, and the owner replied to every critical text yet 3 of 189 are 1 star (a rude reply, an unanswered WhatsApp, an upsell). Best for German speakers and stays of a week or more who want new bikes and clear damage rules. Not for cheapest-per-day or rentals under 5 days.

Raf’s Affordable Rentals

Raf’s Affordable Rentals scores 8.0 from 42 reviews read, so the small-sample label applies. It is a Bophut shop with one product: Honda Click 125 at a flat 150 THB a day, the bottom of the island band, with both older and newer units, weekly maintenance included and delivery to hotels and the pier.

Of the 42 reviews read, 34 praise the price and 11 the free delivery, and none is negative. The deposit is 2,000 THB cash and a passport photo, original passport not held. There is no website, only a Facebook page, WhatsApp and phone; no insurance terms were found and damage handling has only 3 mentions, so the damage and breakdown scores rest on little data.

Watch-outs: the bikes are older than at the top shops (16 fleet mentions positive, 1 negative), no insurance, and a small operation means little backup if a bike fails. Best for budget week or month rentals in northern Samui. Not for riders who want new bikes, a larger scooter or insurance cover.

46 Moto Bike Rent

46 Moto Bike Rent scores 7.8 from 189 reviews read, with the best handover record in the sample and a small, Lamai-based fleet. It runs Fino, QBIX and Fazzio 125, Click 160, Aerox, Nmax, ADV, PCX 160 and XMax 300. A 125cc is 250 THB, a Click or ADV 160 400-550 THB, an XMax 800-900, so 160cc rates sit above the 300-450 THB median.

The deposit is 3,000 THB cash or 100 EUR for a 125cc (5,000 THB or 150 EUR for a 160cc), passport photo only, returned on the spot: 28 renters say no passport kept. Handover photos and the contract arrive by WhatsApp, and 6 renters call an accident or damage claim fair and transparent; the owner contacted the police after a hit and run. 9 reviews report a puncture or breakdown fixed or the bike replaced in 15 to 20 minutes. It is also the only shop in the sample whose renters mention statutory Por Ror Bor medical cover with stickers.

Watch-outs: one renter was charged 650 THB for scratches they had not photographed, hours are 10:00-18:00 Monday to Saturday, and with a small stock walk-ins can find the bike gone. Delivery is free in Lamai for 5-day-plus rentals, 500 THB for airport or pier transfers. Best for Lamai stays and a documented handover. Not for instant online booking or damage cover.

Thai-Moto

Thai-Moto scores 7.3 from 204 reviews read, the biggest sample, and covers both scooters and big bikes: Click 125 at 200 THB, PCX 160 at 350, ADV 160 at 400, ADV 350 at 800 and up to X-ADV 750 at 2,000, with Rebel, MT-07 and CRF300L too. Cars appear in about 10 of 183 texts.

Fleet and service are mostly good: 65 reviews call bikes new or nearly new, and 95 mention helpful staff, a beginner briefing and a practice lot, though 7 report unfriendly staff or an unreachable owner. Deposit is 3,000-5,000 THB cash or passport for up to 160cc, 10,000-20,000 THB for big bikes; renters pick cash and report it back within minutes. One renter says the passport was held until police arrived, and nearly missed a flight.

The damage record is the weak point. About 25 reviews talk about damage: 17 report small damage waived or billed fairly and the full deposit back, but 9 report 1,000-4,000 THB for scuffs or a plate, 5 of them since March 2025, and 4 say the shop would not itemise the deduction. The terms page bills new damage at the lessor’s part prices, and an IDP is required over 160cc. Best for big-bike renters and long rentals. Not for anyone who skips handover photos, Sunday pickups (closed) or those wanting written insurance terms.

Id Scooter Rental

Id Scooter Rental scores 6.6 from 177 reviews read, the second lowest, though it is also the largest fleet at about 140 bikes (Giorno, Scoopy, Click 125 and 160, ADV 160, PCX 160, GPX 300) and has 133 Tripadvisor ratings at 5.0 beside 331 on Google. A British owner, Ian, has run it since 2010 per its site. Rates are Click 125 at 250 THB, Click 160 at 350 and ADV 160 at 450, higher than the 150-300 THB median for the small bikes, and 14 of 19 price mentions are positive.

About 50 renters report no passport and no deposit; bikes carry a GPS or AirTag tracker instead. That is the catch: 4 renters found a tracker they were not told about, and 4 report a fuel bar charged at return that was not on the contract. 30 of 44 fleet mentions are good, but 6 report weak or squealing brakes and 6 worn or rusty helmets.

Delivery is free in the main areas with a 3-day minimum (25 of 26 delivery mentions positive), and handovers at the pier and airport are reported. Service has 40 positive and 8 negative mentions, including 4 reports of a rude woman at the shop. Hours are 09:00-17:00. Best for pier and airport arrivals and walk-ins, if you test the brakes. Not for riders who cannot swap a bike or who check helmet hygiene.

Hakuna Matata Rent

Hakuna Matata Rent scores 6.3 from 180 reviews read, the lowest on the board, with 1,290 Google reviews at 4.8 and 35 on Tripadvisor at 3.9. It rents Click 125 at 150-250 THB, PCX 160 at 400, Forza 350 at 800 and cars from the Bophut and Chaweng area, with free island-wide delivery to hotels, the pier and the airport only above a 1,000 THB minimum order.

The price and the 3,000 THB cash deposit with passport photo (not held) are real draws. But 16 of about 175 reviewers report worn tyres, weak or missing brakes or high-mileage vehicles, 8 of them since April 2025. 6 report deliveries 25 minutes to 2 hours late, one missing a ferry. 3 report the 1,000 THB minimum and 3 no refund for an early return. 2 renters were charged for scratches that were already on the bike despite a handover video, and 2 reviewers say the owner threatened police or defamation action after a negative review.

The positives are also real: 45 delivery mentions and 95 service mentions are positive, with fast WhatsApp and Telegram replies. Best for a long Click or PCX rental, ferry-pier handover and Russian speakers. Not for 2-3 day budget rentals, tight schedules or riders who skip a brake and tyre check.

What Do Scooter Rentals Cost Across the Island?

A 110-125cc automatic costs 150-300 THB (~4.50-8.50 USD) a day and a 150-160cc 300-450 THB (~8.50-13 USD), per the island medians in this site’s price dataset (October 2026). The cheapest rated rates are Raf’s at a flat 150 THB, Hakuna Matata from 150 THB, and Thai-Moto and CHANG at 200 THB; 160cc bikes at 400-550 THB at 46 Moto and Id Scooter sit at or above the top of the band.

Class Island median per day Rated shops
110-125cc 150-300 THB 150-270 THB
150-160cc 300-450 THB 300-550 THB
300cc and above no median 650-2,000 THB

Free hotel delivery usually needs a minimum rental (Hakuna Matata asks for a 1,000 THB, ~29 USD, minimum order): 2 to 7 days at CHANG, 3 days at Id and Tonton, 3 to 5 days at Thai-Moto, 5 days at 46 Moto and AuBanan, and the order minimum at Hakuna Matata. Delivery without a minimum is charged by distance at several shops, 500-700 THB at Samui Rental Service. Longer rentals cost less per day: Thai-Moto and Hakuna Matata mention long-rental discounts.

Do Scooter Shops Keep Your Passport?

Rarely. No shop rated here requires the original passport as its only deposit: eight take a photo of it, and Thai-Moto and Samui Rental Service list a passport as an alternative to cash, which reviewers say they decline in favour of cash. Cash deposits run 0-3,000 THB for a scooter up to 125cc and up to 5,000 THB for a 160cc or large bike at some shops.

Shop Deposit rule Reviews say
AuBanan, CHANG None, passport photo No cash, no passport
Id Scooter Rental None, passport copy, tracker About 50 say none
Tonton, Raf’s 2,000 THB, photo Returned at once
Expat Rentals Maenam 0-2,000 THB Passport never held
46 Moto, Hakuna Matata 3,000 THB cash or about 80-100 EUR Returned after a check
Samui Rental Service, Thai-Moto 3,000 THB or passport; big bikes 10,000-20,000 THB Choose cash

Isolated reports contradict the rules: one renter says staff held the passport at Id Scooter Rental, one at Thai-Moto until the police came, and one at Hakuna Matata alongside cash. Refuse, and offer cash or a photo. The scooter rental guide covers why passports should not be left.

Is There Insurance on a Rented Scooter?

Usually not in any form that pays for the bike. Of ten shops, only 46 Moto Bike Rent is reported (2 reviews) to include the statutory Por Ror Bor medical cover, with stickers, about 30,000 THB of medical cover; it does not cover the bike or third-party property. Tonton and Thai-Moto claim vehicle insurance but publish no excess and no renter describes a payout. The other seven publish no insurance terms at all.

The practical rule across the sample is that the renter pays new damage at part prices, which AuBanan prints in an itemised list and Thai-Moto’s terms state outright. That makes insurance scores sit in the 4-6 band for every shop, and no shop publishes a zero-excess option. Check that your own travel insurance covers a scooter ride and the licence you hold: policies commonly exclude riders without a motorcycle licence and IDP, and the driving guide covers the rules.

How Do You Avoid a Damage Claim?

Photograph and film every panel at handover, with the shop watching, before you sign. Damage fairness is where scores differ most: reviews report fair settlements at 46 Moto (6), AuBanan (4) and Samui Rental Service (4 small scratches settled cheaply), and disputes at Thai-Moto and Hakuna Matata.

Scratches like this are what a handover video settles

The patterns to know:

  • Thai-Moto: of about 25 damage mentions, 9 report 1,000-4,000 THB for scuffs or a plate, and 4 were refused an itemised breakdown.
  • Hakuna Matata Rent: 2 renters were charged for scratches already present despite a video.
  • 46 Moto: one 650 THB scratch charge after the renter had taken no photos.
  • Id Scooter Rental: one renter pinned a pre-existing crack on the shop; staff note handover scratches in other reports.
  • Tonton: one disputed claim was dropped after a handover video.

Ask for the part price list before you sign. A scooter contract in Thailand often prices every panel, key and mirror; the example below is a Koh Phangan form, but the practice is the same.

Keep the video until the deposit is back, and take a second one at return.

What Should You Check Before You Ride?

Test both brakes, check tyre tread, and make sure the helmets fit. Reports of brakes and tyres cluster at Hakuna Matata (16 negative fleet mentions) and Id Scooter Rental (6 weak-brake and 6 worn-helmet reports), and are rare at AuBanan, CHANG, Tonton and Samui Rental Service.

Check the helmet fit before you leave the shop

Before leaving the shop:

  • Squeeze each brake lever, roll the bike a few metres and brake. Squealing or a soft lever means ask for another bike.
  • Check tread on both tyres and look for cracks.
  • Test lights, indicators, horn and mirrors, and ask where the fuel level should be at return.
  • Take a helmet that fits and has a working strap. The fine for riding without one is up to 2,000 THB (~57 USD) per person since 1 June 2025, reported by the Bangkok Post.
  • Photograph the odometer, fuel gauge and every scratch, and ask whether the bike carries a tracker.
  • Carry your motorcycle licence and IDP. The law requires both (the US Embassy in Thailand says an IDP is needed alongside a valid home licence), though many shops never ask; the scooter rental guide explains how to get an IDP.

Which Shop Suits Which Rider?

Match the shop to your priority, then check the bike. Passport-free week-plus rentals: CHANG, AuBanan and Tonton. Cheapest day rate: Raf’s (150 THB) and Expat Rentals Maenam for a 160cc (about 200 THB), both small samples. Lamai stays: 46 Moto Bike Rent or AuBanan. Big bikes: Thai-Moto. Pier, airport or same-day walk-in: Id Scooter Rental, with a brake test. A car and a bike from one shop: Samui Rental Service, Tonton or Hakuna Matata. For a car instead, see the car rental companies list.

How Do You Book Without Surprises?

Book by WhatsApp and ask for the all-in price in writing. Booking at the rated shops runs mainly through WhatsApp or chat, and no shop is reported to offer instant card booking.

  • Reserve ahead in December-March and July-August; small shops such as 46 Moto have run out of bikes for walk-ins.
  • Ask for the minimum rental for free delivery, the fuel rule, and whether delivery is free outside office hours.
  • Confirm hours: Samui Rental Service and Id close by 17:00, 46 Moto and Thai-Moto by 18:00, and Thai-Moto is closed Sundays.
  • Ask whether you can extend by message and pay on return.
  • Keep the shop’s WhatsApp number for breakdowns: a swap within the hour is reported at CHANG, within 10 to 30 minutes at Tonton and 15 to 20 at 46 Moto.

What if You Do Not Want to Ride?

A short hop needs no rental. A motorbike taxi costs about 50-100 THB for a short ride, and a bicycle works on the flat north coast. Learn the rules of the ring road first in driving in Koh Samui, and see the scooter rental guide for licences, IDP and the full how-to.

FAQ

What is the best scooter rental shop on Koh Samui?

On the board, Expat Rentals Maenam (8.6) leads from 50 reviews, then CHANG Samui Rentals (8.5, 187 reviews) and Tonton Samui Rental (8.4, 193 reviews). CHANG is the safest all-round pick: passport-free, near-new bikes at or under the median price, free hotel delivery on a 2-7 day minimum.

How much does a scooter cost per day on Koh Samui?

A 110-125cc automatic costs 150-300 THB a day and a 150-160cc 300-450 THB. Rated shops quote 150-270 THB for a 125cc and 300-550 THB for a 160cc, with big bikes at 650-2,000 THB. Weekly and monthly deals lower the daily rate, and free delivery usually needs a minimum.

Do Samui scooter shops keep your passport?

Not by rule at the shops rated here. Eight take a photo, and Thai-Moto and Samui Rental Service list passport only as an alternative to cash. A few reviews report a passport held anyway. Offer cash or a photo, and never leave the original.

Is scooter rental insurance included?

Rarely. Only 46 Moto Bike Rent is reported to include statutory Por Ror Bor medical cover, about 30,000 THB. The renter pays damage to the bike at part prices at every shop, so record the bike’s condition at handover and check your travel insurance covers scooters.

Do I need a licence to rent a scooter on Koh Samui?

Yes in law: a home-country motorcycle licence plus an IDP with the motorcycle class. Many shops never ask, but police checks and insurers do, and a crash without them can void a claim. Helmets are compulsory, with a fine of up to 2,000 THB per person.

Which shops deliver to hotels for free?

CHANG, Tonton, Expat Rentals Maenam, Raf’s, Id Scooter Rental, Thai-Moto, Hakuna Matata and AuBanan (small fee) deliver, most free above a minimum rental of 2-7 days. 46 Moto delivers free in Lamai on 5-day-plus rentals. Samui Rental Service reports fees of 500-700 THB.
