See the full fileSantiburi Koh Samui scores 7.6 out of 10 in the Samui69 file. It is a 96-suite and villa beach resort on Maenam beach on the north coast, open since 1992, and it suits families with children under 12 and couples who want private-pool villas, a calm beach and staff who remember names. It is a poor match for anyone who wants nightlife, walkable dining, step-free access or a brand-new design: condition scores 6.4, value 6.8 and access 5.8. Entry villas started around 9,000 THB (~257 USD) a night in the sources checked on 30 September 2026.
Method: 199 guest reviews read one by one (189 on Tripadvisor, 10 on HolidayCheck), 37% of them from the last 18 months. Booking.com, Trip.com and Expedia gave aggregate scores only, from search snippets. Checked 30 September 2026. Every judgement below is what guests report or what the file shows.
Santiburi sits on Maenam beach, on 23 acres of tropical gardens with a private stretch of palm-lined sand. The hotel lists 96 suites and villas: garden villas, beachfront villas and Reserve pool villas, most with a private pool. On paper it has a 50 m main pool with jacuzzis, a shaded kids pool, Santiburi Spa in standalone treatment suites, a sports centre, tennis, Thai boxing, cycling, non-motorised watersports, cooking classes and a junior camp for children from age 4. Dining runs across Sala Thai, The Beach House, The Pool House and the 1933 Bar, and the Michelin Guide lists the hotel.
Pets are not allowed. The file found no parking policy. Sustainability claims are Green Globe certification, a carbon-neutral certificate and a Green Hotel gold award, with plastic bottles banned, refill stations, solar panels and grey water recycling. Guests rarely mention any of it, but press coverage backs the refill and solar points.
Platform scores sit high. Tripadvisor shows 4.7 out of 5 from 1,467 reviews, with service 4.8, cleanliness 4.8, rooms 4.7, sleep 4.7, location 4.6 and value 4.4. HolidayCheck shows 5.8 out of 6 from 862 reviews. Booking.com shows 9.1 out of 10 from 374 reviews, Trip.com 9.4 from 59 and Expedia 4.7 out of 5 from 79.
The 199-review sample explains where the Samui69 score gives points back:
| Category | Mentions (+ / -) | Score |
|---|---|---|
| Staff and service | 150 / 25 | 9.1 |
| Grounds and premises | 75 / 8 | 9.0 |
| Beach | 55 / 9 | 8.8 |
| Rooms and design | 62 / 22 | 7.8 |

| Condition and age | 18 / 30 | 6.4 |
| Value for money | 20 / 40 | 6.8 |
Staff praise is the loudest signal: guests name individual staff, and several describe a general manager who is hands-on with guests. Nine of the 199 reviewers say they come back for the staff. The soft spots are the ageing product and the bill. At least 12 reviews call the property old or in need of renovation, and about 30 flag high prices for food, water, spa or late checkout. A general manager’s reply in April 2025 confirmed renovation, towel replacement and pest control measures; the extent of the works is unverified.
Rooms score 7.8, with 62 positive and 22 negative mentions. Guests praise spacious villas and private pools. The complaints are about dated furnishings, old TVs, worn original rooms, leaks and tired plunge pools. Beds score 8.2 (14 positive, 5 negative), with a Tripadvisor sleep subscore of 4.7; a few guests mention loud AC or a damp smell.
Views depend on the category. Beachfront and pool sea-view villas face the water; garden villas face greenery, which guests also praise. Views score 7.4 for that reason: the sea view has to be booked.
Cleanliness scores 8.5 (40 positive, 9 negative), with rooms cleaned twice daily and scattered mentions of frogs, roaches and mosquitoes, which is normal for a tropical garden site. Bathrooms score 7.4 and split the file almost evenly (7 positive, 8 negative): guests report mould in a shower, hot water control problems and dirty switches.
The beach is the strongest physical asset: 55 positive and 9 negative mentions, a score of 8.8. Guests describe a private, palm-lined, calm stretch that works for children. Complaints are few umbrellas at peak, wind and murky water on some days. The wider bay is covered in the Maenam beach guide, and the Bophut vs Maenam guide compares it with the busier bay next door.
The pools score 8.0 (32 positive, 17 negative). The main pool is 50 m long with jacuzzis and a shaded kids pool, and most villas have a private pool. Some guests call the main pool the best they have used; others find it warm, sterile or sometimes murky. The kids pool was reported closed for renovation in October 2025.
Grounds score 9.0 across 75 positive mentions: mature gardens, flat paths and a buggy service. Waits of 15 to 20 minutes for a buggy at peak and dark paths at night are the only recurring notes. Location scores 6.8: the airport is roughly 15 to 25 minutes away and Fisherman’s Village is a walk, described in the Bophut Fisherman’s Village guide, but most trips need a taxi.
Breakfast scores 8.5 (55 positive, 14 negative): a buffet with à la carte items, called exceptional by many. Complaints are peak queues, reserved tables and repetition on long stays. It runs from one main venue.
Restaurants score 7.0 and split the file (40 positive, 34 negative). Sala Thai and The Beach House are loved, while guests report high prices against outside restaurants, charged water, inconsistent service, venues closed on some evenings and a rubbery pizza. Bars score 6.4 (8 positive, 10 negative): calm, with no live music, and critics call the 1933 Bar soulless. Slow pool drinks are a recurring note.
The spa scores 8.3 (14 positive, 4 negative): excellent therapists, with spa and beach massage prices at hotel level. Wellness scores 7.6 for free Hobie Cat and other non-motorised watersports, a cooking class with Chef Pop, tennis and Thai boxing, against complaints of high fees for some activities.
Condition. The lowest physical score. Condition sits at 6.4 with 18 positive and 30 negative mentions. The grounds are immaculate, but torn loungers, worn towels and tired tiles are reported.
Extras. Value scores 6.8 (20 positive, 40 negative). Guests report pricey food, water, spa and activities, late checkout fees of up to 10,000 THB (~286 USD), and an airport transfer of about 1,700 THB (~49 USD) one way. Some still call it worth it for the service and grounds.
Evenings. Couples score is 8.0 partly because evenings are very quiet, but the same quiet means zero nightlife. Bars close early and some restaurants shut in low season.
Access. The grounds are flat with buggies, yet one wheelchair guest found restaurants, pools and restrooms hard to reach despite assurances. Access scores 5.8.
Noise. Quiet scores 8.4 (28 positive, 5 negative). The exceptions are a loud wedding event and family crowds in school holidays.

Yes. It has a private palm-lined beach on Maenam bay with staffed loungers. Guests report calm water, but too few umbrellas at peak and wind or murky water on some days.
Guests report a private limousine at about 1,700 THB (~49 USD) one way. The airport is roughly 15 to 25 minutes away by road.
Yes, with limits. The resort has a junior camp from age 4, a shaded kids pool, babysitting and a calm beach, and families score it 8.2 in the file. Some guests call the club basic at peak seasons, and the kids pool was reported closed for renovation in October 2025.
Partly. Fisherman’s Village is a walk, but most trips need a taxi or the hotel buggy. Guests who want nightlife or many dining options report it as remote.
The file is split: 20 guests call it good value, 40 call it pricey. Service and grounds justify the room rate for many, while the extras bill does not. Expect entry villas from about 9,000 THB (~257 USD).
Tripadvisor 4.7 out of 5 from 1,467 reviews (Tripadvisor page), and HolidayCheck 5.8 out of 6 from 862 reviews (HolidayCheck page). Both sit above the Samui69 score because that score weights condition and value, where the complaints gather.
Each hotel is scored on 26 counts from 0 to 10. Verifiable facts set the starting point, then what guests report moves it up or down.
