Rocky's Boutique Resort review: 7.6 out of 10 from 172 guest reviews. Superb staff and rooms, but a stony beach and steep steps. From 3,700 THB (~106 USD).
7.6 out of 10
Standout staff, spotless rooms and two good pools on a steep cove; the beach is stony and the many steps rule out some guests.

See the full fileRocky’s Boutique Resort scores 7.6 out of 10 in the Samui69 file. It is a 4-star, roughly 70-room resort on a terraced hillside above a small cove south of Lamai, and it suits couples, honeymooners and families with young children who want warm service and large, clean rooms. It is a poor match for guests with reduced mobility, swimmers who want a beach at the door and anyone who plans to eat out of the hotel: access scores 4.4, beach 4.6 and location 5.8. Rooms started around 3,700 THB (~106 USD) a night in the sources checked on 30 September 2026.
Method: 172 Tripadvisor guest reviews read one by one, 74% from the last 18 months, set against the aggregate scores of HolidayCheck, Booking.com, Trip.com, Hotels.com and Agoda, which the file holds as totals only. Checked 30 September 2026. Every judgement below is what guests report or what the file shows.
The resort opened in 2003 and was renovated in 2022, when a new sea-view building added lofty rooms. Published figures vary: the current listing gives 67 rooms plus 3 pool villas, while an older official page says 47 rooms and 3 villas. It belongs to the Veranda Collection and lists SHA Extra Plus status, a Michelin Guide entry and a Travellers’ Choice 2026 award on Tripadvisor.
Facilities on paper: two pools (a beach pool and a garden pool), plunge pools in some rooms, a small private beach, a restaurant terrace over the sea, a beach bar, a spa, a fitness room, a kids club room, a cooking class and free kayaks and paddleboards. The hotel also lists a nursery for restaurant produce, water recycling and beach clean-ups. Those sustainability points are hotel claims: no guest in the file confirms them and no certification turned up.
Pets are not allowed. Parking is free on site.
Platform scores sit high. Tripadvisor shows 4.8 out of 5 from 3,156 reviews and ranks the resort 2 of 52 hotels in Lamai Beach. HolidayCheck shows 5.9 out of 6 from 201 reviews, and every reviewer there recommends it. Booking.com shows 9.2 out of 10 from about 651 reviews, Trip.com 8.9 from 82, Hotels.com 9.6 and Agoda 4.5 out of 5 (the last three from search snippets, not read in full).
The 172-review sample explains the gap to a perfect score:
| Category | Mentions (+ / -) | Score |
|---|---|---|
| Staff and service | 130 / 9 | 9.4 |
| Cleanliness | 50 / 3 | 9.4 |
| Rooms and design | 55 / 11 | 8.8 |
| Pools | 45 / 10 | 8.6 |
| Value for money | 20 / 14 | 7.6 |
| Quiet and privacy | 14 / 12 | 7.2 |
| Beach | 14 / 24 | 4.6 |
| Accessibility | 3 / 14 | 4.4 |
Staff is the loudest signal in the file: 130 positive mentions against 9 negative. Guests name individuals repeatedly, and 9 praise the wedding planner Hannah. The few complaints concern slow breakfast service, a cold response after an accident and one cancelled booking. The weak spots are physical, not human: a stony beach, a steep site and a remote position. Those are why the overall figure lands at 7.6 and not at the 9-plus that the platform averages suggest.
Rooms score 8.8 with 55 positive and 11 negative mentions. Guests describe large, modern rooms and pool villas with big bathrooms and balconies, and the 2022 sea-view building is the favourite. The recurring gripe is storage: few hangers and little wardrobe space. Some guests in the new building also hear road noise, and a few rooms have only a partial sea view.
Sleep is mixed. The file holds 12 positive and 13 negative bed mentions: some praise huge comfortable beds, about a dozen report hard mattresses (toppers fixed it for some) or loud air conditioning. Bathrooms score 8.6 (8 positive, 2 negative), with one report of a wet room flooding around the toilet. Cleanliness is the strongest physical score at 9.4: rooms are cleaned up to twice a day with turndown, and the only complaints are a stained towel once and lizards on the grounds.
Condition scores 8.6. The renovation resets the picture: guests call the place well kept, with construction noise during the expansion and one old door gap as the exceptions.
The pools carry the resort. Pool scores 8.6 from 45 positive and 10 negative mentions: a beach pool facing the sea, a garden pool that children fill, and private plunge pools in some rooms. Complaints are small and predictable: sunbeds run short at busy times, the garden pool is loud with children, and one guest reports slippery tiles.
The beach is the file’s clearest miss. It scores 4.6 from 14 positive and 24 negative mentions. The private beach is small and stony, shallow at low tide and seasonally weedy, and about 10 guests say it is not good for swimming. The hotel provides water shoes and free kayaks, paddleboards and surfboards, and many guests simply swim in the pools. For proper sand, see the Lamai beach guide and the Lamai area guide.
Views score 9.0 (40 positive, 4 negative): sea views from most rooms, the restaurant and the beach pool. The grounds score 7.0, with lush terraced gardens but a steep 50 m slope from the road and, by guests’ counts, about 65 steps between the dining room and some rooms. The hotel runs a buggy on call, and guests with mobility issues report that it helps, but accessibility still scores 4.4 (3 positive, 14 negative). Choosing between a beachfront and a hillside resort is covered in the beachfront vs hillside guide.
Breakfast scores 8.5 (45 positive, 10 negative): a buffet plus a la carte dishes on a terrace over the sea, with made-to-order eggs praised. A few guests find fruit and pastries limited, and service can be slow at peak hours. The Dining Room has a Tripadvisor score of 4.4.
Dinner scores 7.8 (40 positive, 22 negative). Guests report excellent Thai food and a Saturday beach BBQ with a fire show, but mains and drinks cost more than outside, a 7% VAT and 10% service charge are added, and the menu feels limited on long stays. The bar scores 7.8: good cocktails, named bartenders and a 2-for-1 happy hour from 6 pm to 8 pm, balanced by an early close around 11 pm and smoke drifting to nearby tables. Cooking classes are covered in the Koh Samui cooking classes guide.
The spa scores 7.6 (9 positive, 2 negative): excellent therapists, dearer than massage shops outside. The gym scores 6.8 and is rarely mentioned. Wellness scores 8.0 with free kayaks and paddleboards, a cooking class loved by families, and yoga, meditation and Thai boxing sessions that guests mention. Wi-Fi has almost no guest data, so the 6.5 is a cautious middle.
Beach. It is the worst-scoring category after access: 14 positive and 24 negative mentions, with swimming impractical at low tide and seaweed in season.
Steps and slopes. About 14 guests mention steep slopes or steps, and some note missing handrails. The buggy service helps, but anyone with a stroller, a walking aid or a weak knee should ask about room location before booking.
Location. Food and shops are not within walking distance and a main road runs nearby. A free shuttle goes to Lamai and Chaweng, and one guest reports a taxi to the Lamai strip at about 7 GBP. Most guests in the file rent a scooter or a car: see the getting around guide.
Price of extras. About 20 guests mention high food and drink prices. Room rates are fair for the tier, and the value score is 7.6 with 20 positive and 14 negative mentions.
Noise. Quiet scores 7.2 with 14 positive and 12 negative. The cause is road noise in the new building, wedding events, expansion work and air conditioning hum.

Pros
Cons
The pools are. The private beach is small, stony and shallow at low tide, and about 10 guests say it is not good for swimming. The hotel provides water shoes and free kayaks and paddleboards.
Yes, with conditions. Kids and families score 8.5: a kids club room, a garden pool, family and connecting rooms and staff who are warm with children. The garden pool gets busy, and the stairs are a risk with small children and strollers.
The entry rate was about 3,700 THB (~106 USD) a night and the high end about 9,200 THB (~263 USD) in the sources checked on 30 September 2026. Food and drinks carry 7% VAT and 10% service on top.
The file does not support it: guests call walking to shops impractical, mention a main road and recommend a scooter, a taxi or the free shuttle to Lamai and Chaweng. For the wider area, see the Chaweng vs Lamai guide.
Yes. The hotel offers beachfront weddings and beach dinners, and 9 guests in the file praise the planner Hannah. Noise from wedding events is also reported by a few guests staying at the same time. See the Koh Samui weddings guide.
Tripadvisor 4.8 out of 5 from 3,156 reviews (Tripadvisor page), and HolidayCheck 5.9 out of 6 from 201 reviews (HolidayCheck page). Both are higher than the Samui69 score because that score also weighs beach, access and location, where the complaints gather.
Each hotel is scored on 26 counts from 0 to 10. Verifiable facts set the starting point, then what guests report moves it up or down.
