6.8 out of 10
A top family resort with superb staff and six pools, but the beach is poor and a busy road splits the site.

See the full fileOutrigger Koh Samui Beach Resort scores 6.8 out of 10 in the Samui69 file. It is a 146-room resort in Lamai (Maret), marketed as 5-star, and it suits families with young children who want six pools, a free kids club and staff who go out of their way. It is a poor match for swimmers who expect a clean beach in front of the hotel, for light sleepers, and for anyone who dislikes crossing a road to reach the sea: beach scores 3.0, quiet 5.8 and location 5.6. Rooms started around 4,000 THB (~114 USD) a night in the sources checked on 30 September 2026, plus a 17% service and tax surcharge.
Method: 164 guest reviews read one by one, 58% from the last 18 months, set against the aggregate scores of Tripadvisor, HolidayCheck, Booking.com, Hotels.com and MakeMyTrip (the last three from search snippets only). Checked 30 September 2026. Every judgement below is what guests report or what the file shows.
The resort is the former Manathai Koh Samui. Outrigger bought it in 2021, renovated it fully and reopened it under the Outrigger name in 2022. Published figures give 146 rooms (some sources say 148), in a colonial-style complex with gardens. Facilities on paper: about six pools including a beach pool, a quiet pool, kids pools and a waterslide, a kids club, a games room with laser tag, the Edgewater Beach Club, a small gym, salas for massage, and free morning activities such as pilates, meditation, Muay Thai and volleyball.
Two items are hotel claims. The resort lists Green Key certification for 2026 and partners with the Baan Tai Crab Bank marine project, but no guest in the file confirms any visible practice. Pets are not allowed. Parking is free on site, self-parking or valet.
One layout fact shapes most of the file: the Rob Koh road runs through the property. Rooms and the main pool sit on one side, while the beach, Edgewater Beach Club and the beach pool sit on the other. Crossing guards staff the road.
Platform scores sit high. Tripadvisor shows 4.5 out of 5 from 319 reviews and ranks the resort 10 of 69 in Maret (Tripadvisor page). HolidayCheck shows 5.4 out of 6 from 75 reviews, with 93% recommending the hotel (HolidayCheck page). Booking.com shows 8.3 out of 10 from 1,829 reviews and Hotels.com 8.6 out of 10. Tripadvisor subscores: cleanliness 4.8, rooms 4.7, service 4.6, sleep 4.5, value 4.4, location 4.2.
The 164-review sample shows where the Samui69 score departs from those numbers:
| Category | Mentions (+ / -) | Score |
|---|---|---|
| Staff and service | 120 / 14 | 9.2 |
| Kids and families | 60 / 10 | 9.3 |
| Pool | 62 / 12 | 8.3 |
| Breakfast | 62 / 18 | 8.4 |
| Quiet and privacy | 14 / 26 | 5.8 |
| Beach | 8 / 46 | 3.0 |
| Value for money | 32 / 28 | 6.3 |
Staff praise is the loudest signal: over 100 of 164 guests name or praise staff, and Toey, Feen, Michael and Norbert recur. Kids club staff are named by families. Service lapses exist (slow restaurant service, inconsistent reception) but they are rare. The weak spots are physical. About 50 of 164 guests call the beach dirty, weedy, shallow or not swimmable, and about 14 complain about the road split.
Rooms score 7.8, with 70 positive and 18 negative mentions. Guests describe spacious, well-decorated colonial-style rooms and suites, including Lamai and Garden family suites and interconnecting rooms. The negatives are dark interiors, few chairs on balconies and, for some rooms, neighbour rooftops or a generator instead of a view. Views score 5.5: the sea is visible from the beach side, while many rooms face gardens.
Beds score 7.6 (40 positive, 14 negative). Guests praise the mattresses and pillow choice. The complaints are scattered: loud air-conditioning, windows that do not close well, street noise, and a bed too firm for side sleepers. Bathrooms score 6.3: immaculate in many reviews, small in others (few hooks, no outlets), with a handful of mould and plumbing smell reports.
Cleanliness scores 8.3 (58 positive, 15 negative), backed by the Tripadvisor cleanliness subscore of 4.8. The complaints are fruit flies at breakfast, a mouldy smell in some rooms and one report of insects in a bed. Condition scores 7.0: the resort was renovated in 2022 on an older base, and 14 guests mention wear, uneven paths or mould.
Families are the natural audience for the layout. Interconnecting rooms and family suites are praised, and kids score 9.3 with 60 positive and 10 negative mentions. The negatives are children dominating the pools and, after 18:00, the Voyager 47 lounge filling with kids.
The pools carry this hotel. Guests report about six: a beach pool, a quiet pool, kids pools and a waterslide. The pool scores 8.3 with 62 positive and 12 negative mentions. The complaints are loudness (the beach-side pool is busy with kids), crowding and too few loungers at peak.
The beach is the opposite story and the most repeated complaint in the file, with 8 positive and 46 negative mentions and a score of 3.0. Guests describe seaweed, plastic and rubbish, shallow silty water that they did not swim in, and a smell they link to a pipe or river discharge. The facts fit: the beach in front sits near a fishing port and a canal outfall. Several guests say nicer sand lies further along Lamai, and the Lamai beach guide covers the wider bay. For a comparison of the two big east-coast bases, read Chaweng vs Lamai.
Location scores 5.6 (14 positive, 22 negative). Lamai town and its night market are a 10-15 minute walk, which guests call far from the centre. The road crossing is a daily chore, though guests appreciate the traffic marshals.
Grounds score 7.4: handsome colonial gardens and activities, but uneven paths, a dark breakfast room and dead evenings appear in the reports. Accessibility scores 5.5. Two guests flag mobility limits, one of them at the club lounge and the pools.
Breakfast is the best food story: 62 positive and 18 negative mentions, a score of 8.4. The buffet has an omelette station and a wide spread, and several guests call it the best breakfast they had in Thailand. The negatives are crowds from 09:00 to 10:00, bread and fruit running low, and fruit flies.
Dinner is weaker at 6.3 (30 positive, 24 negative). Edgewater Beach Club and its grill get good marks for food and cocktails, but guests report high prices, an oversold seafood BBQ, menu items that are unavailable and slow service. Few outside venues are near, so half-board packages come up often. Bars score 6.8: the cocktails and bartenders are praised, and the pool bar closes about 22:30. Drinks run 300+ THB (~9 USD) and water 80 THB (~2 USD), which many guests call expensive.
The spa is a cautious 5.5. The salas sit beside the kids pool, which guests say leaves no privacy, and massage quality is mixed. One guest paid about 400 THB (~11 USD) for an hour. The gym scores 6.0: small but adequate, with some guests wanting bigger equipment. Wellness scores 7.3 for free morning classes, including pilates, meditation, Muay Thai and volleyball, though some sessions are poorly attended.
Beach. Not swimmable for most of the 54 guests who mention it. A traveller who books for a beach holiday should plan a day trip or use the pools.
Noise. Quiet scores 5.8 with 14 positive and 26 negative mentions. The causes are the road, children at the pools, and one episode in October 2025 when a guest reports renovation noise during a baby’s nap without warning. Management acknowledged noise in a September 2026 reply.
Value. Rooms ran from about 4,000 to 8,000 THB (~114-229 USD). The value score is 6.3 (32 positive, 28 negative). Guests like the bed-and-breakfast and half-board packages, but the 17% surcharge, expensive food and drinks, and a 4-star feel at a 5-star price recur.
Couples. There is no adults-only pool. Couples praise the romantic colonial setting and the birthday surprises, but others find the pools full of kids, and one calls the evenings deathly quiet.

Yes. Manathai Koh Samui was bought by Outrigger in 2021, fully renovated and reopened under the Outrigger name in 2022. Some older reviews and photos still carry the Manathai name.
The file says no for most guests. About 46 of the 54 beach mentions are negative: seaweed, rubbish, shallow silty water and a smell. The pools are the fallback.
The file shows no all-inclusive plan. Guests mention bed-and-breakfast and half-board packages and complain about food and drink prices outside them. Ask the hotel what your rate includes.
Yes, it is the strongest part of the file: kids score 9.3. The resort has a free kids club, games room, laser tag, baby and kids pools, a waterslide and babysitting, and interconnecting rooms. The recurring negative is children dominating the pools.
Mixed, at 6.5. Guests praise the romantic colonial style and warm staff, but there is no adults-only pool and families fill the shared spaces.
Tripadvisor 4.5 out of 5 from 319 reviews, HolidayCheck 5.4 out of 6 from 75 reviews with 93% recommending, Booking.com 8.3 out of 10 from 1,829 reviews. The Samui69 score is lower because it weights the beach, quiet, location and value, where the complaints gather.
