Verdict: Melia Koh Samui scores 7.3 out of 10

Melia Koh Samui scores 7.3 out of 10 in the Samui69 file. It is a 200-room, 5-star beach resort in Choeng Mon, 15 minutes from the airport, and it suits families with young children and first-time visitors who want a calm beach and staff who fix problems. It is a poor match for couples after silence, light sleepers and anyone counting baht: quiet scores 4.5, couples 5.0 and value 5.8. Rooms started around 6,000 THB (~171 USD) a night in the sources checked on 30 September 2026.

Method: 160 guest reviews read one by one, most of them on Tripadvisor and 85% from the last 18 months, set against the aggregate scores of HolidayCheck, Trip.com and Kayak. Checked 30 September 2026. Every judgement below is what guests report or what the file shows.

What does the brochure say?

The hotel is a 2020 conversion of the former Imperial Boat House resort, on Choeng Mon beach in the island’s northeast. Published figures give 159 rooms and 41 suites, 34 of them the hull-shaped “boat suites” that define the place. Facilities on paper: a lagoon pool loop of about 700 m with a lazy river and slides, a kids club and splash pool, YHI Spa, a fitness centre, free kayaks and paddleboards, daily yoga, and buffet breakfast from 07:00 to 11:00. The Michelin Guide lists the hotel, and Ecostars Bronze certification (2024-2027) appears on the hotel side. That last item is a hotel claim: no guest in the file confirms it.

Pets are not allowed. Parking is free on site, and an EV charger is listed by Michelin.

What do guests actually report?

Platform scores sit high. Tripadvisor shows 4.9 out of 5 from 2,974 reviews. HolidayCheck shows 5.2 out of 6 from 149 reviews: 96 rated it excellent, 10 poor or worse, and 87% recommend the hotel. Trip.com gives 9 out of 10 from 76 reviews, with cleanliness at 9.2 and location at 9.1.

The 160-review sample explains why the Samui69 score is lower than those headline numbers:

Category Mentions (+ / -) Score
Staff and service 115 / 9 9.4
Kids and families 35 / 6 9.6
Breakfast 32 / 5 9.0
Pool 30 / 14 8.2
Quiet and privacy 7 / 25 4.5
Value for money 5 / 13 5.8

Staff praise is the loudest signal in the file: about 12 guests name one staff member, Baw. Service problems, when they occur, are reported as solved quickly, and rude reception or slow service shows up in only a handful of reviews. Cleanliness, grounds and location also score above 8. The weak spots sit elsewhere: the file shows a resort that handles guests well and handles crowds and construction badly, which is why the overall figure lands at 7.3 and not above 9. Noise is the loudest complaint. About 25 of 160 guests mention it, either children in peak weeks or the pool construction of 2026.

What are the rooms and boat suites like?

Rooms score 7.8. Guests describe spacious pool-access rooms and the boat suites as the draw, with 28 positive and 12 negative mentions. The negatives are dated details and boat suites that stay dark. Sea views come from the boat suites and the Level rooms, while other rooms face garden or pool. The Level and the pool-access rooms lead to the same finding: guests who upgraded to them are the happiest in the file, and the Level upgrade is one of the few value comments that is positive.

Family suites are covered by the kids score of 9.6, but guests also flag missing cots and stairs with small children. The sample is thin on beds (3 positive, 6 negative): AC and neighbour noise pull several sleep ratings to 3 out of 5. Bathrooms are big in suites, although glass doors, drainage, sealing and flush faults appear in the reports.

Cleanliness scores 8.6: daily housekeeping is praised, with isolated mentions of stained cushions, mosquitoes and one musty room. Condition scores 6.9, the lowest of the physical categories. The hotel is only six years old, yet 15 guests report wear.

How good are the pools and the beach?

The pool is the reason families pick this hotel. A lagoon loop of about 700 m winds between the suites, with a lazy river, slides and a kids pool. It scores 8.2 with 30 positive and 14 negative mentions. The complaints are predictable: loungers reserved with towels (about 8 guests report this, and one says a 30-minute clearing policy was introduced), worn pool edges, and the closure of parts of the pool in mid-2026.

The beach scores 8.3: Choeng Mon sand with calm, shallow water (25 positive, 7 negative). Guests who mention crowding, close-set loungers, cloudy water or litter are the minority. For the wider bay, see the Choeng Mon beach guide. Location also scores 8.3. The airport is about 15 minutes away, and the distance to Fisherman’s Village is roughly 5.6 km, with Chaweng about 5.8 km away (route distances from public map data, not from the guest file). Guests mention walkable cafes nearby. Read the Bophut Fisherman’s Village guide for the evening-market side of the trip.

Grounds score 8.5: lush, immaculate tropical gardens with buggies on call. The downside is size. Guests report long walks, and few buildings have lifts, which is why accessibility scores 4.8.

What is the food and drink like?

Breakfast is the best food story in the file, with a score of 9.0 (32 positive, 5 negative). The buffet runs 07:00 to 11:00 with live stations, vegan and gluten-free options. The only recurring complaint is a wish for more Thai dishes.

Dinner scores 7.0. The beach restaurant Breeza is liked (22 positive, 14 negative across restaurants), while guests report repetitive choice, slow service and high prices for food and bottled water. Koko Kitchen is the other named venue. The pool bar is friendly but pricey, the lobby bar closes at 4 pm, and the pool bar sits beside the kids slide.

The spa gets a cautious 7.0: the YHI Spa and its coconut massage are praised, but only six guests mention it, so the sample is small. Wellness scores 7.6, with daily morning yoga, Thai boxing tasters, a private cooking class and free kayaks and paddleboards. The hotel has no fitness complaints beyond size: the gym is small, with no cable machine.

Where does Melia Koh Samui fall short?

Noise. It is the worst score in the file. Quiet sits at 4.5 with 7 positive and 25 negative mentions. The causes are two: children in peak weeks, and pool construction that started in June 2026. At least five reviews from June and July 2026 report construction or a closed pool. One guest reports the hotel paid 1,000 THB (~29 USD) a day in compensation. Anyone travelling in late 2026 should ask the hotel about works before paying.

Couples. There is no adults-only pool and only one rooftop adult area. Six guests praise the romance of the boat suites, but eight say children dominate the shared spaces.

Value. Rooms ran from about 6,000 to 10,500 THB (~171-300 USD) in the sources checked. The value score is 5.8, with 5 positive and 13 negative comments, mostly about food, drinks and water prices. Guests who upgraded to a pool-access room are the exception.

Access. Buggies are on call, but several buildings have no lift and the site is large. Reduced mobility is a poor match.

Who should book, and who should not?

Book it if you are:

  • a family with young children who will use the pool, slides and kids club all day
  • a guest who values named, attentive staff above design
  • a first-time visitor who wants a calm beach, 15 minutes from the airport, with food stops close by
  • a traveller willing to pay for a Level or pool-access room

Skip it if you are:

  • a couple or honeymooner after silence and an adults-only pool
  • a light sleeper travelling in peak weeks
  • travelling with a pet, or with limited mobility
  • hunting for a bargain, since the file shows pricey extras

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Staff praised by name in most reviews (115 positive against 9 negative) and quick problem solving
  • Lagoon pool, lazy river, slides and kids club make it a best-in-class family choice on Samui
  • Wide fresh breakfast and a calm, shallow Choeng Mon beach

Cons

  • Noise from kids in peak weeks and from the 2026 pool works (about 25 of 160 guests)
  • No adults-only pool, so poor for quiet-seeking couples
  • Pricey food, water and rooms; wear on pool edges, cushions and loungers; dark boat suites

What are the alternatives?

  • The Ritz-Carlton, Koh Samui: also near Choeng Mon, a 175-room estate on a private bay with two secluded beaches. A better match for couples and quiet, with entry rooms from around 10,500 THB (~300 USD).
  • Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui: all-pool-villa resort on Laem Yai Bay, far from the family-pool crowd. Privacy is total, but the nightly budget runs to five figures in baht and there is no beach strip to walk to.

For the trip from the airport, see the how to get to Koh Samui guide and the getting around guide.

FAQ

Is Melia Koh Samui all inclusive?

The file shows no all-inclusive plan. Guests describe paying for food, drinks and bottled water, and price complaints concentrate there. Ask the hotel which meal plan your rate includes.

How much is the airport transfer at Melia Koh Samui?

The Michelin Guide listing gives a private transfer at 900 THB (~26 USD) per way for up to six passengers. The airport is about 15 minutes by road. The hotel also runs a shopping shuttle and golf buggies inside the grounds.

How far is Melia Koh Samui from Fisherman’s Village and Chaweng?

About 5.6 km to Fisherman’s Village and about 5.8 km to Chaweng, from public map data. Both are short taxi rides.

Is the pool open in 2026?

Guests reported pool construction and closures from June 2026, at least five reviews in June and July. The file does not show when the works end. Ask before booking for the rest of 2026.

Are there family suites and a kids club?

Yes. The hotel lists a kids club, splash pool, slides and family rooms, and families give it a 9.6 in the file. Cots and stairs are the recurring complaints.

What do the review platforms say?

Tripadvisor 4.9 out of 5 from 2,974 reviews (Tripadvisor page), and HolidayCheck 5.2 out of 6 from 149 reviews (HolidayCheck page). Both are higher than the Samui69 score because that score weights quiet, condition and value, where the complaints gather.
