Verdict: Kamalaya Koh Samui scores 7.1 out of 10

Kamalaya Koh Samui scores 7.1 out of 10 in the Samui69 file. It is a 76-room wellness sanctuary on a forested hillside at Laem Set, built around a monk’s cave, and it suits solo travellers and anyone who books a structured programme of five nights or more. It is a poor match for families with young children, beach holidays, guests with reduced mobility, remote workers and tight budgets. Staff score 9.5, the spa 9.3 and wellness 9.4, while the beach scores 5.0, access 4.0 and value 6.0. Entry rooms ran about 12,000 THB (~343 USD) a night in the sources checked on 30 September 2026.

Method: 170 guest reviews read one by one, about 31% of them from the last 18 months, set against the aggregate scores of Tripadvisor, Google (as shown by 50 Best Spa) and Trip.com, which gave scores only. Checked 30 September 2026. Every judgement below is what guests report or what the file shows. The file records guest reports, not health outcomes, and makes no medical claims.

What does the brochure say?

The resort opened in 2005 and lists 76 rooms: hillside rooms, garden view rooms, superior sea view suites, penthouse pool suites and beachfront pool villas. It sells about 20 structured programmes from 3 nights, with daily yoga, meditation, qi gong and Muay Thai, a fitness centre with specialists, a spa with more than 100 wellness professionals, and the Soma restaurant with communal dining. The Longevity House was added around 2023. Non-guests can buy a day pass at 1,800 to 5,300 THB++ (~51-151 USD) on the official site.

Ownership changed in 2021, and the founder exit of 2024 is noted in the file. Three guests mention the change, and repeat guests say quality held. The hotel also lists no single-use plastic, composting, solar water heaters in suites and AC savers. That is a hotel claim: no guest or certificate in the file confirms it. Pets are not allowed, and the parking policy was not found.

What do guests actually report?

Platform scores sit high. Tripadvisor shows 4.8 out of 5 from 679 reviews, with service at 4.8, cleanliness 4.8, sleep 4.7, rooms 4.6, location 4.6 and value 4.4. The Google score shown by 50 Best Spa is 4.8 from 1,234 reviews, and Trip.com gives 9.8 out of 10 from 40 reviews.

The 170-review sample shows where the Samui69 score lands and why:

Category Mentions (+ / -) Score
Staff and service 110 / 4 9.5
Wellness and activities 75 / 6 9.4
Spa and massage 60 / 8 9.3
Restaurants 80 / 14 8.2
Beach 14 / 12 5.0
Access 4 / 10 4.0
Value for money 20 / 22 6.0

Staff praise is the loudest signal. Guests say staff remember names and show genuine care, and several repeat guests, some on their 3rd to 12th visit, say quality is still rising. Only a handful of reviews disagree: one guest found the service forced, and two from 2025 found it pricey. The weak spots are physical and financial rather than human: a steep site, a tidal beach, and extras that add up. That mix is why the overall figure sits at 7.1 and not near the platform averages.

What are the rooms and villas like?

Rooms score 8.0, with 40 positive and 4 negative mentions. Guests call them immaculate and spacious and like the bungalow design. Suites are about 65 sqm, and the top categories add private pools: penthouse pool suites and beachfront pool villas. The negative mentions are about entry hillside rooms, which are dimmer and plainer than the sea view suites.

Views score 7.5 (14 positive, 3 negative). Sea views come from suites and villas, while entry hillside rooms look into greenery. Sleep scores 8.0: the Tripadvisor sleep subscore is 4.7, and a few guests mention noisy outdoor AC units. One guest gave the sleep 2 of 5. Bathrooms score 7.0 on little data, with one 2025 report of a drain smell and a broken shower drain.

Cleanliness scores 9.3 (25 positive, 2 negative), with one mention of mosquitoes. Condition scores 8.0: the resort is over 20 years old, yet guests report it well kept.

How good are the pools and the beach?

The pool scores 6.5 on thin data: 8 positive and 1 negative mention, and several of those say the pools make up for the beach. The file shows one main outdoor pool plus private pools in the top villas and penthouses. Nobody in the sample describes it as crowded.

The beach is the weakest of the natural features. It is a private sandy cove below a rocky hillside, and it scores 5.0 with 14 positive and 12 negative mentions. Around 14 guests call it shallow, tidal or stony, and several could not swim at low tide. For the wider coast, see the Laem Set beach guide. Location scores 5.5: the airport is about 21 km and 45 minutes away, nothing is in walking distance, and guests say they depend on resort dining and taxis for outings. The how to get to Koh Samui and getting around guides cover the transfer.

Grounds score 7.0: guests call the gardens of granite boulders and tropical planting stunning, and about 12 mention steep walks and stairs. Buggies are on request.

What are the programmes, food and spa like?

Wellness is the reason to come, and it scores 9.4 with 75 positive and 6 negative mentions. Guests call the structured programmes transformative, and reviewers most often recommend 7 to 10 nights. The negatives: one guest found a 5-day package over-packed, and some report extras charged after the programme. The file does not judge any treatment’s effect on health and gives no medical advice. Anyone with a condition should ask a doctor first. The yoga and wellness retreats guide puts the offer in island context.

Food is the most mentioned single item: restaurants score 8.2 with 80 positive and 14 negative mentions. Soma serves communal, health-focused menus, including detox menus, and guests often call the food the best part of the stay. Complaints are about small portions, high prices and a wish for down-to-earth food. Breakfast scores 8.3 (10 positive, 2 negative), a superfood buffet described as fresh and healthy, with some repetition on long stays. The bar scores 4.5 on little data: alcohol and coffee are discouraged.

The spa scores 9.3 (60 positive, 8 negative) and ranks #9 worldwide on the 50 Best Spa list. Guests praise the therapists and call treatments very expensive: one reports about 131 EUR (~4,600 THB) for a 60-minute head massage. The gym scores 8.6 with 10 positive and no negative mentions, with praise for the trainers and personalised fitness plans. For other options on the island, read the spas and massage guide.

Where does Kamalaya Koh Samui fall short?

Value. Rooms ran from about 12,000 to 14,500 THB (~343-414 USD) in the sources checked. The value score is 6.0 with 20 positive and 22 negative mentions. Complaints are about treatments, food and extras, and one theme is a basic room plus package costing double other resorts. Guests who come for the programmes more often say it was worth it.

Access. Accessibility scores 4.0 (4 positive, 10 negative). The hillside is steep, stairs are everywhere, and buggies help but are not always at hand. Reduced mobility is a poor match.

Beach and location. Both score 5.0 to 5.5. The cove is tidal and stony, and the resort is a bubble: dining, activities and treatments happen on site.

Kids, Wi-Fi and pace. Kids score 3.0: children are allowed and fees may apply, but no kids club was found and one guest praised the lack of families. Wi-Fi scores 5.0 because it is deliberately weak in public areas as part of a digital detox. A few guests also note phone calls in common areas.

Who should book, and who should not?

Book it if you are:

  • a solo traveller who wants a structured programme and a crowd that skews to solo guests
  • staying 5 nights or more, which is what reviewers recommend
  • a guest who rates staff, food and the spa above the beach
  • looking for quiet, with a digital detox built in

Skip it if you are:

  • a family with young children, since no kids club was found
  • after a beach holiday with easy swimming
  • travelling with reduced mobility, because the hillside is steep
  • a remote worker or on a tight budget

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Staff praised in about 110 reviews against 4 negative
  • Food and spa are standouts, with the spa ranked #9 worldwide
  • Very clean and quiet, with structured programmes guests report good results from

Cons

  • Pricey: 22 guests call prices, portions or extras poor value
  • Tidal, stony beach that about 14 guests call too shallow to swim
  • Steep hillside with many stairs and a remote location

What are the alternatives?

  • Banyan Tree Samui: hillside pool villas on Lamai Bay, rated 7.8 in the file, with a top-tier spa and EarthCheck Gold. Entry rooms from about 18,600 THB (~531 USD), a stony bay, and buggies on a steep site too.
  • Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui: private pool villas with Gulf views, rated 8.3. Spa, kids club and free water sports are guest-confirmed. Entry rooms start at about 36,500 THB (~1,043 USD), so it costs far more.
