Verdict: Amari Koh Samui scores 7.3 out of 10

Amari Koh Samui scores 7.3 out of 10 in the Samui69 file. It is a 193-room, 5-star resort on the north end of Chaweng Beach, about 10 minutes from the airport, and it suits families with children, breakfast lovers and guests who rate service above design. It is a weaker match for light sleepers, for anyone who wants a swimmable beach all year and for travellers who expect a new-build finish: condition scores 6.6 and quiet 6.7. Rooms started around 4,300 THB (~123 USD) a night in the sources checked on 30 September 2026.

Method: 157 Tripadvisor reviews read one by one, 64% of them from the last 18 months, set against aggregate scores from HolidayCheck, Booking.com, Agoda and Google as shown in search snippets. The HolidayCheck page gave totals and a score distribution only, with no individual reviews. Checked 30 September 2026. Every judgement below is what guests report or what the file shows.

What does the brochure say?

The resort opened in 1992 as Amari Palm Reef and took the Amari Koh Samui name in 2015. It belongs to the ONYX group, which has run the brand since 2010. No renovation year turned up in the sources, which matters later for the condition score. The hotel claims 890 m of beachfront and lists three wings: Garden, Thai Village and Beach. Family hut rooms and two-bedroom suites sit on top of those.

On paper it offers three pools (a garden salt-water pool was added around 2024 to 2025), a beachfront pool with a bar, the Amaya Food Gallery buffet, the Prego Italian restaurant, a beach eatery, Breeze Spa, the FIT Centre gym, a kids club and a dive school. Sustainability claims on the hotel side include refill dispensers, no single-use plastic and beach clean-ups. Those are hotel claims: no guest in the file confirms them and no Green Globe or EarthCheck certificate turned up.

Pets are not allowed. Parking is free on site.

What do guests actually report?

Platform scores are high. Tripadvisor shows 4.4 out of 5 from 3,960 reviews and ranks the hotel 17 of 96 in Chaweng. HolidayCheck shows 5.6 out of 6 from 223 reviews, and 95% of those guests recommend it. Booking.com gives 8.5 out of 10 from 1,319 reviews and Agoda 8.6 from 1,784. Google, via a Hotels.com snippet, shows 8.8.

The 157-review sample explains why the Samui69 score sits below those headline numbers:

Category Mentions (+ / -) Score
Staff and service 100 / 14 9.3
Breakfast 55 / 8 9.2
Pool 40 / 10 8.3
Kids and families 30 / 8 8.3
Quiet and privacy 14 / 26 6.7
Condition and age 8 / 18 6.6

Staff are the loudest signal. About 15 of the 157 guests name Penn, the most praised single person in the file, and at least four guests report a voucher or an upgrade after a service problem. Reception and middle-management slips exist, but they are the minority. Cleanliness scores 8.0 and grounds 8.2. The file shows a resort that treats guests well and ages less well: old fittings, rust, mould reports and noise pull the overall figure down to 7.3. Value scores 7.0, with 25 positive and 20 negative mentions.

What are the rooms and wings like?

Rooms score 7.4, with 35 positive and 22 negative mentions. Guests like the Thai Village rooms, which they describe as spacious. The complaints cluster on garden-wing and ocean rooms that feel small or dated, and on five-person family rooms that get tight. Sea views come from the beach wing. Pool-view rooms can barely see the pool, and some guests say the ocean-view premium is not worth paying.

Beds score 7.4 and the sleep subscore on Tripadvisor is 4.5 out of 5, yet the reports split: 12 positive and 14 negative mentions. The negatives are thin walls, noisy AC and door locks, and aircraft at dawn. Bathrooms score 6.8. They are spacious in the garden wing, but guests report mould and rust, a sewage smell on a balcony or in a room, and showers or toilets that malfunction.

Condition is the weakest physical score. The property dates from 1992 and no renovation year was found. Eighteen guests report wear, rust or repairs, against eight who call it well maintained, and a few say it feels 4-star rather than 5. The two-bedroom family suites with a mezzanine are the layout most families will look at.

How good are the pools and the beach?

Three pools are the main reason the resort copes with families. The file shows 40 positive and 10 negative pool mentions and a score of 8.3. Guests say the spread of pools keeps crowding low. The gripes are sunbeds reserved with towels, a pool that closes early, and diving lessons in the pool with no lifeguard on duty at times.

The beach is the most divided category in the file: 14 positive and 14 negative mentions, score 6.0. Some guests praise white sand and few people. About 14 call the water shallow, weedy or murky, and a few say it is not swimmable. Seaweed and tide vary by season, so treat swimming as conditional. A road runs between the garden wings and the beach. About 8 reviews mention the crossing, and staff guide guests over it. See the Chaweng beach guide for the wider bay.

Location scores 8.6: restaurants and shops are within walking distance, and the airport is about 10 minutes away by the hotel’s own claim. The Koh Samui airport guide and the airport to Chaweng guide cover the transfer. For the evening scene down the road, read the Chaweng nightlife guide.

What are the food, drink and spa like?

Breakfast is the best food story: a score of 9.2 from 55 positive and 8 negative mentions. The Amaya Food Gallery buffet runs live cooking stations, and guests call it one of the best on the island. The recurring complaints are queues and pigeons at peak hours, plus inconsistent coffee.

Dinner scores 7.0. Guests like the beach venue and the BBQ nights. Prego draws complaints about portions and seasoning, and several say dinners are pricey and suggest eating outside the hotel for value. Bars score 7.2: a pool bar and the Amaya Bar with a daily happy hour, pleasant but nothing memorable.

Breeze Spa scores 7.3: guests mention quality treatments, but also that it is priced like a hotel spa, and one says there is no sauna or steam room for a 5-star property. The FIT Centre gets 7.0 on thin data, with one guest confirming 24-hour access. Wellness scores 6.5. The file shows family activities, themed nights and a dive school, but no guest confirms yoga or classes.

Where does Amari Koh Samui fall short?

Noise. Quiet scores 6.7 with 14 positive and 26 negative mentions, the largest negative count in the file. About 10 reviews cite aircraft or thin walls, and others cite noisy guests or live music near rooms. Guests who describe it as calm are comparing it with the rest of Chaweng.

Condition. The 1992 bones show in rust, mould and plumbing reports. The hotel answers most complaints with upgrades or vouchers, but the pattern repeats.

Beach. It is shallow and sometimes seaweedy or murky, and a road separates it from half the rooms.

Couples. There is no adults-only zone. Romantic beach dinners and hosted weddings are praised, yet the resort is family led, and couples score 6.8.

Value at peak. One guest reports tiny rooms at about 16,000 THB (~457 USD). Entry rates near 4,300 THB (~123 USD) draw fairer comments, and a 10% service charge plus 7% tax is added.

Sustainability. The score is 6.0 on hotel claims alone.

Who should book, and who should not?

Book it if you are:

  • a family with children who will use three pools and the kids club
  • a guest who values named, attentive staff and a big breakfast
  • planning a wedding or group event, since several guests praise hosted weddings for up to 250
  • a first-time visitor who wants a quiet north Chaweng base with restaurants on foot

Skip it if you are:

  • a light sleeper, given the aircraft, thin walls and AC reports
  • set on a swimmable beach every month of the year
  • a couple or honeymooner who wants an adults-only area
  • travelling with a pet, since pets are not allowed
  • after a design-led, recently built room

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Staff praised by name in most reviews (100 positive against 14 negative)
  • Huge live-station breakfast and three pools with lush gardens
  • Family friendly, walkable north Chaweng, about 10 minutes from the airport

Cons

  • Dated rooms and maintenance faults (mould, rust, plumbing, AC) in a 1992 property
  • Shallow, sometimes seaweedy beach, with a road between the wings and the sand
  • Aircraft, thin-wall and neighbour noise; peak rates and food extras are pricey

What are the alternatives?

  • Melia Koh Samui: the file scores it 7.3 as well. A 2020 conversion on calm Choeng Mon beach with a lagoon pool, lazy river and slides, rooms from about 6,000 THB (~171 USD). Newer and stronger on kids, but weaker on quiet, and the file shows pool works in 2026.
  • Anantara Bophut: scores 7.8 in the file. A 106-room resort a short walk from Fisherman’s Village with its own beach and strong family and wellness offer. Rooms start near 7,400 THB (~211 USD), and guests report a coarse-sand beach and no lifts.
