Verdict: SALA Samui Chaweng Beach Resort scores 8.0 out of 10

SALA Samui Chaweng Beach Resort scores 8.0 out of 10 in the Samui69 file. It is a 134-room, 5-star beach resort at the quiet north end of Chaweng, and it suits couples, honeymooners and families with babies or small children who want a private pool and staff who solve problems. It is a weaker match for swimmers who need deep clear water, light sleepers and anyone on a budget: the beach scores 7.0, quiet 7.2 and value 7.4. Rooms started around 6,500 THB (~186 USD) a night in the sources checked on 1 October 2026.

Method: 165 Tripadvisor reviews read one by one, 60% of them from the last 18 months. HolidayCheck, Booking.com and Google were used for aggregate scores only. Checked 1 October 2026. Every judgement below is what guests report or what the file shows.

What does the brochure say?

The resort opened in 2018 and is split into two wings by a public road. The oceanfront wing has 52 pool rooms (2018), the garden wing 82 rooms (2019). Every oceanfront room has a private pool, sized between about 15 and 52 sqm. Published facilities include the Moon Pool, a lap pool, a kids pool, SALA Spa, a fitness centre, a kids club in the garden wing, free kayaks and paddleboards, a Thai cooking class and three main venues: The Tent beachfront restaurant, Sexy Fish and the Beach Bar. The hotel also advertises yoga classes, which is a hotel claim: no guest in the file confirms a session.

Pets are not allowed. Parking is free on site. Children under five stay free on existing beds. The hotel lists the reservation line as +66 77 905 888 and the official site is salahospitality.com. Do not confuse it with SALA Samui Choengmon Beach, a separate sister resort on the northeast coast with its own reviews and score.

What do guests actually report?

Platform scores sit high. Tripadvisor shows 4.8 out of 5 from 1,313 reviews, with rooms, cleanliness, service and sleep each at 4.9 and value at 4.7. HolidayCheck shows 5.6 out of 6 from 76 reviews, and 95% recommend the hotel. Booking.com shows 9.0 out of 10 from 1,428 reviews and Google 4.7 out of 5 from 2,256, both from search snippets only.

The 165-review sample behind the Samui69 score looks like this:

Category Mentions (+ / -) Score
Staff and service 140 / 12 9.4
Cleanliness 78 / 10 8.9
Rooms and design 70 / 12 9.0
Pools 45 / 10 8.8
Beach 32 / 14 7.0
Quiet and privacy 25 / 12 7.2
Value for money 25 / 14 7.4

Staff praise is the loudest signal in the file. About 140 mentions are positive, many naming individual team members across departments, and guests repeatedly point to a visible, hands-on General Manager. Problems reported to the team or through the SALA app are described as handled quickly. The negatives are few: slow table service at the restaurants and one case of an inflexible reservations team.

The overall figure lands at 8.0 and not at the 9.6 implied by the platforms because the file weights beach, quiet and value, where the complaints gather.

What are the rooms and pool villas like?

Rooms score 9.0 with 70 positive and 12 negative mentions. Guests describe large, stylish, spotless pool suites and garden pool villas in a white, arched design. About six guests single out the pillow and scent selection offered at check-in. The oceanfront wing gets sunrise views over the bay; the garden wing faces gardens. Views score 7.6, because some rooms face a bamboo screen or a wall.

Beds score 8.8 (22 positive, 5 negative). Three guests report loud air conditioning at night. Complaints about rooms are small: weak soundproofing on sliding doors, limited terrace seating and, in a handful of reviews, worn sections.

Families get the garden wing two-bedroom suites, described as “Family and Friends” suites on the hotel site. Cleanliness scores 8.9 with twice-daily housekeeping reported. Ants at breakfast, lizards and flies are mentioned by about five guests, and one villa review reports cockroaches.

Condition scores 8.0. The wings are about seven to eight years old and pool areas were renewed in 2024. Reports of rust, peeling paint, splintering wood and stained pool towels are a minority (8 of 33 condition mentions), and two reviews call the rooms overpriced for the wear.

How good are the pools and the beach?

Pools score 8.8 with 45 positive and 10 negative mentions. Private pools in the oceanfront rooms are the main draw. The complaints are specific: private pools that stay cold, and a main pool guests call small with few loungers. The Moon Pool is the shared centrepiece.

The beach scores 7.0 (32 positive, 14 negative). Guests praise white sand, free loungers and free kayaks and paddleboards. At least 10 report seaweed or seagrass, and others mention shallow water that turns muddy at low tide. Loungers are reserved early in the morning. For the wider bay, read the Chaweng beach guide.

Location scores 9.0 (40 positive, 5 negative). The resort sits at the quiet north end of Chaweng, about 3 km from the airport, with a 7-Eleven, restaurants and shops within walking distance. The guide to getting from the airport to Chaweng covers transfers, and the general Chaweng area guide covers where to eat and go out.

Grounds score 7.8. Guests like the photo spots and gardens, but the site is compact, has little greenery around the pools, and a road separates the two wings.

What are the food, drink and spa like?

Breakfast scores 8.4 (50 positive, 11 negative). It is a buffet plus a la carte menu served at The Tent on the beach. Guests praise the variety and the setting. A minority find the buffet limited, hot or crowded, and one reports ants. A floating breakfast in the private pool is also offered.

Restaurants score 8.0 (40 positive, 14 negative). The Tent and Sexy Fish are the praised venues. Complaints concern slow service, wrong orders at The Tent and prices that some guests call high for the quality. The Beach Bar scores 8.3 with cocktails and happy hour praised.

The spa scores 7.8. Guests rate the therapists highly, but the hotel prices sit above beach massage and town massage, and one guest found the treatment average. The gym is described as good in six mentions, with no detail on size or hours. Wellness scores 7.3: free kayaks and paddleboards, a cooking class with the chef and a fire show are confirmed; yoga is a hotel claim and Muay Thai training has one mention.

Private beach dining is reported by guests celebrating proposals and anniversaries, a pattern that fits the couples score.

Where does SALA Samui Chaweng fall short?

Beach conditions. Seaweed, seagrass, shallow water and low tide are the recurring notes, at least 10 reports. Swimmers who need deep, clear water are better served by a private pool than by the sea here.

Noise. Quiet scores 7.2 with 25 positive and 12 negative mentions. Reports include street noise, rowdy groups at the pool, air conditioning, construction once and, from one guest, loud neighbours at 3 am. North Chaweng is calmer than the main strip but not silent.

Food and spa prices. Value scores 7.4 with 25 positive and 14 negative mentions. Some guests call food and spa pricey, and a few give value 3 out of 5 while rating everything else at 5.

Families and couples share space. Kids score 8.2 and couples 8.4, but guests mention many children at times, and a few report rowdy groups by the pool. Children’s activities are limited beyond the kids club.

Accessibility and pets. The site is flat but a road splits the wings, and accessibility data is thin (6.5). Pets are not allowed.

Who should book, and who should not?

Book it if you are:

  • a couple or honeymooner who wants a private pool and celebration touches
  • a family with a baby or young children, since guests praise infant care and the kids club
  • a guest who wants a beachfront resort but also a short walk to shops and restaurants
  • a traveller who values named, responsive staff

Skip it if you are:

  • a swimmer who wants deep, clear sea water every day
  • a light sleeper who needs total silence
  • travelling with a pet
  • looking for a bargain, since food and spa prices are a repeated complaint

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Staff praised by name across departments (140 positive against 12 negative), with a visible General Manager
  • Private pools in all 52 oceanfront rooms, large stylish suites and spotless housekeeping
  • Quiet north Chaweng with shops and food on foot and the airport about 3 km away
  • Beachfront breakfast at The Tent

Cons

  • Seaweed, shallows and low tide on the beach (at least 10 reports)
  • Slow or wrong restaurant orders and high food and spa prices
  • Noise from air conditioning, street and groups, and a road between the two wings
  • Some wear: rust, peeling paint, ants and lizards

What are the alternatives?

  • Hyatt Regency Koh Samui: also in north Chaweng, 140 rooms and a Camp Hyatt kids club, rated 7.0 in the file. Better for families who want five cascading pools, but about 38 reviews call the rocky beach unswimmable and dining is not walkable.
  • OZO Chaweng Samui: 4-star beachfront on Chaweng, rated 6.8 with rooms from about 2,520 THB (~72 USD). Cheaper and well placed with praised staff, but guests report small rooms and noise.
