Verdict: OZO Chaweng Samui scores 6.8 out of 10

OZO Chaweng Samui scores 6.8 out of 10 in the Samui69 file. It is a 208-room, 4-star beachfront hotel on Chaweng Beach Road, about 15 minutes from the airport, and it suits beach-first travellers who want shops and restaurants on foot, families with a gentle beach and kids pools, and guests who value friendly service over floor space. It is a poor match for light sleepers, anyone travelling with heavy luggage and guests who expect an on-site spa: rooms score 5.2, quiet 5.0 and the spa 3.0. Rates started around 2,520 THB (~72 USD) a night in the sources checked on 30 September 2026.

Method: 168 guest reviews read one by one, 158 on Tripadvisor and 10 on HolidayCheck, 56% of them from the last 18 months. Booking.com and the platform totals gave aggregate scores only. Evidence checked 30 September 2026. Every judgement below is what guests report or what the file shows.

What does the brochure say?

OZO Chaweng opened in 2014 and sits on the sand of Chaweng Beach in the island’s east, on the calmer stretch away from the loudest bars. The published figures give 208 rooms, a large pool along the beachfront with a pool bar, a beach bar with a happy hour and the THIRST lounge, the STACKed burger restaurant, a breakfast buffet called Rise and Shine, and a fitness room named TONE. The hotel lists beachside yoga, craft workshops and kids pools. A refresh of the pool and beach bar was done in 2025.

The hotel also lists secure parking, pet-friendly accommodation and wheelchair access, plus a Green Health Hotel certificate and a 2023 Thailand tourism sustainability award, with glass water bottles and paper straws on request. These are hotel claims: no guest in the file confirms them, and the pet policy is not published in detail.

What do guests actually report?

Platform scores sit high. Tripadvisor shows 4.5 out of 5 from 3,155 reviews, with location 4.7, cleanliness 4.6 and sleep quality 4.6. HolidayCheck shows 5.4 out of 6 from 282 reviews, with location at 5.7 and sport at 5.1. Booking.com gives 8.3 out of 10 from 2,439 reviews, with staff at 9.0, location at 9.1 and value at 8.0.

The 168-review sample gives a lower Samui69 score because it weighs rooms, noise and value, where the complaints gather:

Category Mentions (+ / -) Score
Staff and service 90 / 14 8.8
Location and access 60 / 4 9.0
Pool 40 / 14 7.8
Rooms and design 12 / 60 5.2
Quiet and privacy 6 / 18 5.0
Value for money 14 / 22 6.5

Staff praise is the loudest signal in the file: about 90 guests praise the team, and many name reception, breakfast and bar staff one by one. A few reports mention cold reception or late housekeeping. Location is the second strength: 60 positive mentions against 4 negative, with shops and Central Festival within walking distance and the airport about 15 minutes away. The weakest signal is size. About 60 guests call the rooms and balconies small, the most common complaint in the file.

What are the rooms like?

Rooms score 5.2, the lowest of the big categories. The hotel lists Superior and Deluxe rooms of about 23 to 25 m2, and guests report tiny balconies and little storage, with corner and beachfront rooms as the better picks. Design is modern and the file does not call it dated. Guests also flag that some “ocean view” rooms sit around 100 m back from the sea, so views score 7.0 and depend on the room type booked.

Sleep is better than space: beds score 7.2 with 10 positive and 4 negative mentions, and Tripadvisor sleep quality is 4.6. The problems are thin walls, corridor doors and AC noise, which hurt some nights. Cleanliness scores 7.8 (35 positive, 14 negative): guests mostly describe spotless rooms and grounds, while a minority report cockroaches, dust, dirty AC filters or a musty smell.

Bathrooms score 6.3. Some guests call them large, and a handful report mould, leaks or a sewer smell. Condition scores 6.3: the hotel is twelve years old, the pool and beach bar were refreshed in 2025, and guests mention both good upkeep and some wear.

How good are the pool and the beach?

The beach is the main reason to pick the hotel. It scores 8.3 with 45 positive and 10 negative mentions. Guests describe clean sand, a gentle entry into the water, and sunbeds with towel service. The recurring negatives: jellyfish stings, rough seas in some weeks and loungers reserved early with towels. For the wider bay see the Chaweng beach guide, and for the stings read the jellyfish guide before swimming.

The pool scores 7.8 (40 positive, 14 negative). It is a large pool along the beach with a pool bar, and guests like the setting. They report that pool rules are not enforced, loungers are reserved, music is loud and the 2025 works disturbed some stays. Views score 7.0: the sea is visible from the pool, the bar and beachfront rooms, and sunsets from the beach bar are mentioned.

Grounds score 7.6: guests call them cosy and well kept with an easy, flat layout, compact rather than spacious. The wider area is covered in the Chaweng guide.

Two file details shape the pool and beach day. The pool sits along the beach, so the hotel’s sand, pool bar and beach bar form one strip, and guests praise the pool bar food for lunch. Guests who want quiet report that this strip is the loudest part of the property until the music stops around 10 pm.

What are the food, drink and spa options?

Breakfast scores 7.6 (40 positive, 14 negative). The Rise and Shine buffet has stations and guests call it varied and fresh. The complaints are queues, a cramped room, repeats and items running out at peak.

Restaurants score 6.6 (12 positive, 10 negative). The STACKed burgers and the pool bar food are liked, while dinners are called pricey and mediocre. Prices run above those outside the hotel. The bar scores 6.5: happy hour and cocktails are praised, and the complaints are prices, loud music and uneven service. For places outside the hotel, see the Chaweng nightlife guide.

There is no day spa on site in the file, so the spa scores 3.0. Massage shops and spas are a short walk away in Chaweng. The fitness room is small and guests say the equipment is limited (gym 4.5). Wellness scores 6.0: beach volleyball, yoga and workshops exist, and HolidayCheck gives sport 5.1 of 6, the lowest of its subscores.

Where does OZO Chaweng Samui fall short?

Rooms. Size is the top complaint, with 60 negative mentions against 12 positive. Families and long-stay guests with large cases feel it most.

Noise. Quiet scores 5.0 with 6 positive and 18 negative mentions. The causes are pool bar music until about 10 pm, thin walls, corridor doors and, for some, club noise nearby. Chaweng Beach Road outside is busy too. Ask for a room away from the pool bar and the corridor.

Value. The score is 6.5, with 14 positive and 22 negative comments. Low-season rates are fair, while small rooms, peak-season prices and food and drink prices draw “overpriced” remarks. Rates ranged from about 2,520 THB (~72 USD) to an estimated 9,000 THB (~257 USD) at peak. The high end is approximate, taken from reviews that cite 200 to 300 USD a night.

Works. The pool and beach bar refresh of 2025 brought works and water outages for some guests. Ask about current works before paying for a peak week.

Housekeeping and reception. Late room cleaning and a cold or slow reception are the two service complaints, raised by a minority against the 90 guests who praise the team. The file shows a hotel where the exceptions are noticed because the average is warm.

Who should book, and who should not?

Book it if you are:

  • a beach-first traveller who wants Chaweng shops and restaurants on foot
  • a family wanting a gentle beach, kids pools and connecting rooms
  • a guest who values named, friendly staff over room size
  • a short-stay visitor travelling light, with the airport 15 minutes away

Skip it if you are:

  • a light sleeper who needs silence
  • on a long stay with lots of luggage
  • a guest who wants an on-site spa, or a kids club
  • counting baht on food and drink, as the file shows hotel prices above the street

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Staff praised in about 90 reviews, many by name
  • Beachfront on Chaweng with shops and food on foot, airport 15 minutes away
  • Large beach-side pool, varied breakfast and mostly clean rooms

Cons

  • Small rooms, tiny balconies and little storage (60 guests)
  • Noise: pool bar music to 10 pm, thin walls, corridor doors
  • Crowded loungers, pricey food and drink, late housekeeping, no on-site spa

What are the alternatives?

  • Amari Koh Samui: 5-star in the quieter north of Chaweng, with three pools and a huge breakfast. The file shows 7.3 out of 10 and rooms from about 4,300 THB (~123 USD), but a 1992 building with dated rooms and a road between hotel and beach.
  • Hyatt Regency Koh Samui: 5-star with five pools and a kids club, scoring 7.0 in the file. The beach is rocky and unswimmable per about 38 reviews, and there is no walkable dining.
