Verdict: Nora Buri Resort scores 7.2 out of 10

Nora Buri Resort & Spa scores 7.2 out of 10 in the Samui69 file. It is a 5-star, 144-room hillside resort on the north end of Chaweng, about 12 minutes from the airport. It suits couples and honeymooners who want a pool villa, sea and sunrise views and staff who solve problems. It is a poor match for swimmers who want sand at the door, guests with limited mobility or strollers, and families who expect a kids club: beach scores 3.3, access 5.0 and kids 6.0. Rooms started around 4,900 THB (~140 USD) a night in the sources checked on 30 September 2026.

Method: 164 guest reviews read one by one, 96% of them from the last 18 months, set against the aggregate scores of Tripadvisor, HolidayCheck, Trip.com, Agoda and Momondo, which gave totals only. Checked 30 September 2026. Every judgement below is what guests report or what the file shows.

What does the brochure say?

The resort sits on about 16 acres of steep hillside above the bay at Chaweng, with the address given as Moo 5, Chaweng Beach, Bophut. It offers 96 deluxe rooms of about 70 sqm and 48 pool villas. On paper: two infinity pools (one hillside, one beachside) with bars and shallow kid pools, three restaurants including the Thai Rice Barge, three bars, Anodas Spa, an air-conditioned fitness room, free 24-hour golf buggies and free Wi-Fi. Private yoga and Muay Thai lessons, kayaks for hire and a cooking class are offered on request. A SHA Extra Plus health certificate is the only certification found; no green certificate turned up at the property or the group.

Pets are not allowed. Parking is free on site, a fact taken from booking listings because guest reviews do not mention it. The opening year was not found, but the resort has been trading since at least 2011.

What do guests actually report?

Platform scores are good but not spectacular. Tripadvisor shows 4.5 out of 5 from 2,568 reviews, with rooms and sleep at 4.6 and location at 4.2. HolidayCheck shows 5.2 out of 6 from 78 reviews, with 93% recommending the hotel. Trip.com gives 8.9 out of 10 from 60 reviews, Agoda 8.6 from 3,576 and Momondo 8.7 from 1,016.

The 164-review sample shows where the Samui69 score of 7.2 comes from:

Category Mentions (+ / -) Score
Staff and service 120 / 10 9.3
Pools 55 / 5 9.0
Couples and honeymoon 40 / 2 8.8
Value for money 25 / 10 7.4
Location and access 22 / 28 5.4
Beach 6 / 40 3.3

Staff praise is the loudest signal: about 12 guests name Lester, 10 name Git or Sky, and 6 name manager Nung. The loudest complaint is the beach, raised by about 40 of 164 guests as rocky, stony or not suitable for swimming. Stairs and hillside come next, with at least 10 guests flagging them. The file shows a resort that is strong on pools, service and romance, and weak on the things geography decides.

What are the rooms and villas like?

Rooms score 8.4, with 70 positive and 10 negative mentions. Guests describe the roughly 70 sqm rooms as large, with big bathrooms and sea views from the hillside. The negatives are a room that feels dark at night, an uncomfortable extra bed and some dated furniture. Bathrooms score 8.2: huge, with outdoor showers, apart from a dated bathroom in one villa and a bath that did not work once.

Pool villas are the draw for couples: 48 of them, some with a private pool facing the bay. Guests call the pool villas good value, and some private pools run cold or overlook neighbours. Pool villas are priced from about 263 USD (~9,200 THB) for the hillside sea view and about 308 USD (~10,800 THB) for the beachside version, against about 142 USD (~4,970 THB) for a deluxe hillside room, so the private pool roughly doubles the bill.

Sleep scores 7.6 (Tripadvisor sleep 4.6): a few firm mattresses, air conditioning above the bed, and an AC fault that cost one guest two nights.

Cleanliness scores 8.7 (50 positive, 8 negative): daily cleaning is praised, with rare mentions of mosquitoes, musty towels and mouldy curtains. Condition is lower at 6.3, because 14 guests report cracked walls, broken wooden pool posts or tired villas.

Grounds score 6.3 (20 positive, 25 negative). The 16 acres are lush, and a tunnel passes under the road that splits the resort, but the slope is real: guests report many stairs, steep ramps without railings and buggy waits at busy times such as events. The free buggies run around the clock and most guests treat them as part of the stay rather than a perk. Anyone planning to walk between a hillside room, the beachside pool and the restaurants should expect a climb on the way back.

How good are the pools and the beach?

Pools score 9.0 with 55 positive and 5 negative mentions, the best physical score in the file. The resort has two infinity pools, hillside and beachside, plus pools in the villas and two 60 cm kid pools. Complaints are small: cold private pools, thin privacy between villas and families taking over a pool.

The beach is the opposite story: 6 positive and 40 negative mentions, a score of 3.3. Guests describe a rocky, stony frontage, washed-up rubbish after storms, cyclone erosion and no usable sand at high tide. Swimming is hard. Sandy Chaweng is a short taxi ride, or the one free afternoon shuttle, and the Chaweng beach guide covers what it is like. Views help compensate (8.8, with 45 positive mentions): sunrise bay views from the hillside villas come up again and again.

What are the food, drink and spa like?

Breakfast scores 8.8 (55 positive, 8 negative). The buffet has Western, Thai, vegetarian, gluten-free and plant-based choices over long hours, and the recurring complaints are repetition on long stays and bread that is not fresh.

Restaurants score 8.0. The Thai Rice Barge and buffet nights with a fire show are praised, while guests report pricey seafood, tepid Thai dishes once, and no halal options. The bars are pool bars with a 4-6 pm happy hour (7.8, no complaints found).

Anodas Spa gets 8.3 (22 positive, 2 negative): professional therapists and 90-minute massage packages, with one guest finding the prices high. The gym scores 7.6: air-conditioned and equipped, slightly dated. Wellness is 5.5: private yoga and Muay Thai on request, kayaks for hire, but no daily free programme.

Where does Nora Buri Resort fall short?

Beach. The worst score in the file, described above. Anyone booking for swimming will spend on taxis or the single shuttle.

Location. It scores 5.4 (22 positive, 28 negative). The airport is about 12 minutes away and the resort is quiet, but shops and restaurants are not walkable. A road splits the site, and only one free shuttle runs a day, at about 4 pm to Chaweng, returning at 4:50 pm. Read getting around before deciding on a car. Guests add that taxi costs build up, which drags on value.

Access. Score 5.0: 14 negative against 8 positive mentions. The hill has many stairs and steep ramps without railings. Free buggies run 24 hours and were short of drivers at one event. Guests note it is not for seniors, mobility issues or strollers.

Noise and works. Quiet scores 7.2: road noise in beachside villas, buggies passing, and construction next door from 8 am in 2026.

Sustainability and Wi-Fi. Sustainability scores 3.5 because no green certificate or visible practice was found, only the SHA health certificate and eco tours. Wi-Fi is free but scores a neutral 6.0 on thin data: two guests mention daily re-login and few power outlets, with no USB sockets.

Service lapses. Rare, but one June 2026 guest reports a 6-hour check-in wait and an unresponsive front office.

Who should book, and who should not?

Book it if you are:

  • a couple or honeymooner who wants a pool villa with sunrise views
  • a guest who values named, attentive staff above a sand beach
  • a traveller with a rental car, or happy to use taxis
  • someone who will live in the pools, the spa and the restaurants

Skip it if you are:

  • a swimmer who wants sand and calm water at the door
  • a guest with limited mobility, or travelling with a stroller
  • a family that expects a kids club or play area
  • travelling with a pet, or seeking a green-certified stay

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Named staff praised in about 120 reviews, problems fixed fast
  • Two infinity pools, 70 sqm rooms and private pool villas with sea views
  • Wide breakfast, Rice Barge Thai restaurant, Anodas Spa and free 24 h buggies

Cons

  • Rocky, stony beach not suitable for swimming (about 40 reviews); sandy Chaweng needs a taxi
  • Steep hillside and many stairs; road splits the resort
  • Remote for shops, one free shuttle; ageing details, road and construction noise

What are the alternatives?

  • Melia Koh Samui: scores 7.3 and has a calm sand beach, a lagoon pool and a kids club at Choeng Mon. Better for families, weaker on quiet.
  • Conrad Koh Samui: scores 8.0, with private pool villas and sunset views at Taling Ngam. Also steep and with a small beach, but from 9,500 THB (~271 USD).
