Verdict: Six Senses Samui scores 7.3 out of 10

Six Senses Samui scores 7.3 out of 10 in the Samui69 file. It is a 67-villa, 5-star resort on the Samrong Bay headland at the island’s northeast tip, about 15 minutes from the airport. It suits couples and honeymooners who want service, sea views and a private pool, and wellness-minded guests who like a farm, free classes and a plastic ban. It is a poor match for anyone who wants a swimming beach, anyone who struggles with stairs, light sleepers and travellers counting baht: beach scores 4.5, access 3.5 and value 6.3. Villas started around 15,000 THB (~429 USD) a night in the sources checked on 30 September 2026.

Method: 207 guest reviews read one by one, about 180 of them on Tripadvisor, the rest on Trip.com, HolidayCheck, Google snippets and two blog trip reports, with 32% from the last 18 months. Booking.com (9.4 out of 10, 345 reviews) and Hotels.com gave aggregate scores only. Checked 30 September 2026. Every judgement below is what guests report or what the file shows.

What does the brochure say?

The resort opened in 2004 and was refurbished in 2015. It covers about 20 acres of hillside above Samrong Bay, with buggies for the slopes. Facilities on paper: a 36 m infinity pool, private pools in roughly 59 villas, Dining on the Rocks, Dining on the Hill (breakfast and farm produce), the beach restaurant Drift, Alchemy Bar, Six Senses Spa with a sea-view couple’s suite, a gym, free daily activities and a working farm. Sustainability claims include solar panels, on-site water bottling, a single-use plastic ban and composting. No Green Globe, EarthCheck or GSTC certificate turned up, so those are practices guests can confirm, not a certified programme. A new culinary outlet is planned for Q4 2026, which is a hotel claim.

Pets are not allowed. Parking is free on site and valet is available. Free Wi-Fi is a hotel claim with almost no guest data behind it.

What do guests actually report?

Platform scores sit high. Tripadvisor shows 4.5 out of 5 from 1,249 reviews and ranks the resort 40th of 207 hotels in Bophut. HolidayCheck shows 5.5 out of 6 from 64 reviews, with 84% recommending it. Trip.com gives 9.2 out of 10 from 90 reviews, and recent Trip.com reviews from July 2025 to September 2026 are all 10 out of 10.

The 207-review sample explains why the Samui69 score is lower than those headline numbers:

Category Mentions (+ / -) Score
Staff and service 122 / 15 9.2
Views 40 / 4 9.3
Pools 38 / 8 9.0
Spa and massage 36 / 8 8.3
Quiet and privacy 18 / 20 6.6
Value for money 13 / 23 6.3
Condition and age 12 / 20 5.6
Beach 9 / 27 4.5
Accessibility 4 / 14 3.5

Staff praise is the loudest signal in the file. Each villa has a named Guest Experience Maker, and about 25 guests name hosts such as Noom, Grace or Nafmon and credit them for the stay. Complaints are rarer: inflexible housekeeping, a do-not-disturb sign ignored, and airport pickup mishaps. The weak spots sit elsewhere. The file shows a resort that looks after people very well and sits on a site with a poor beach, a steep hillside and an ageing build, which is why the overall figure is 7.3 and not above 9.

What are the villas like?

Rooms score 8.2 (50 positive, 12 negative). Guests describe spacious wooden villas, some up to 300 sqm, with terraces, private pools and open-air showers. The negatives are dated TVs and USB ports, air-conditioning noise, and a bamboo roof that does not stop sound. A few hideaway villas face the garden, not the sea, and one guest reports a villa orientation with no sun.

Beds score 8.3: the bedding is praised and Tripadvisor’s sleep subscore is 4.6 out of 5. The sleep complaints are noise, not comfort: air conditioning, thin wooden structure and, in five or more reviews, aircraft. Bathrooms score 7.4. They are spacious with soaking tubs and outdoor showers, but isolated reports cover a sewage smell, mould and stained tiles (March 2026) and a bathtub accident (July 2025).

Cleanliness scores 8.0: Tripadvisor’s cleanliness subscore is 4.7 and Booking’s is 9.6. Against that, about 15 reviews across 2019 to 2024 mention mosquitoes, including two of ten German HolidayCheck reviews from 2023, and one 2023 review reports rats in a villa.

Condition is the lowest physical score at 5.6 (12 positive, 20 negative). The 2015 refurbishment is now 11 years old. Guests in April 2025, December 2025 and March 2026 call parts of the resort worn, unloved or decrepit, and mention mould and broken screens. Others in late 2025 praise the upkeep. No renovation after 2015 was found.

How good are the pools and the beach?

The pool is a real strength. The 36 m main infinity pool is called breathtaking by many guests, and the private villa pools add to a score of 9.0 (38 positive, 8 negative). The complaints are small: Instagram photographers in the quiet pool, children in the main pool cutting into the calm, and construction noise above the pool in June 2025.

The beach is the weak side. It scores 4.5, with 9 positive and 27 negative mentions. The Samrong Bay sand is small, gravelly and shallow, and guests report litter and plastic on the sand and in the water, jet skis offshore and only about seven loungers for 67 villas (one guest’s count). Adjacent third-party construction closed or restricted the beach in 2025, and one guest says it was not disclosed at booking. Guests in 2026 still mention construction visible from the sand. For the bay itself, see the Samrong Bay beach guide.

Views score 9.3: sunrise from ocean villas and sunset from the main pool are the most repeated praise. The airport is about 15 minutes away. Location scores 6.0 because the headland is secluded, few shops or restaurants are nearby, and the shuttle to Fisherman’s Village is paid. Read the Koh Samui airport guide for the transfer side.

What are the food, drink and spa like?

Breakfast scores 8.6 (32 positive, 8 negative). Dining on the Hill serves a farm-to-table spread with eggs from the resort farm, and most guests call it varied. Made-to-order waffles are slow, a few find the choice limited, and one 1-star review calls a dish disgusting.

Dinner scores 7.3 (40 positive, 27 negative). Dining on the Rocks is the memorable meal and a fixture in honeymoon reports. The negatives repeat: a limited and mediocre dinner menu, few vegetarian choices, a disappointing BBQ format and high prices. The bar scores 6.5 on little data: the sunset setting is liked, and one guest cites a 150 EUR bottle of wine.

The spa scores 8.3 (36 positive, 8 negative). Guests praise the therapists and treatments, one calls a 2026 massage the best ever, while a few in 2020 and 2025 find it overpriced or impersonal. Wellness scores 8.3: free daily activities, yoga, a herbal inhaler workshop, a farm tour, canoes and kayaks to nearby islands, singing bowls and a cooking class. The gym is small but adequate, on thin data.

Where does Six Senses Samui fall short?

Beach. It is the worst mainstream score in the file after access: 4.5. Expect a pool and a view, not a swimming beach. At least 8 reviews from 2025 and 2026 complain of beach litter, plastic, construction or worn rooms, and 3 of them are 1-star.

Access. Score 3.5 (4 positive, 14 negative). Guests report 70 or more steps to the oceanfront villas, stairs throughout the 20 acres, and grounds that are not stroller friendly. Buggies help, but the resort is not step free and several guests say it is not for seniors.

Noise. Quiet scores 6.6 (18 positive, 20 negative). Five or more reviews mention aircraft, about six mention jet skis offshore, and construction noise appears in February 2024 and June 2025. The villas themselves are called secluded and peaceful by others.

Value. Score 6.3 (13 positive, 23 negative). Villas ran from about 15,000 to 29,000 THB (~429-829 USD) in the sources checked. Guests split between “expensive but worth it” and “overpriced for the wear”, and complaints about dinner and drink prices and the shuttle fee recur. A June 2025 guest says construction above the main pool was not disclosed and the mall shuttle was charged.

Who should book, and who should not?

Book it if you are:

  • a couple or honeymooner who wants a private pool, sunrise and sunset views and named, attentive hosts
  • a wellness-minded traveller who will use the free classes, farm tour and spa
  • a guest who values seclusion on a headland over walkable shops
  • eco-minded, and happy with visible practice (plastic ban, refills, farm) without a certificate

Skip it if you are:

  • a beach swimmer who wants calm, clean sand at the door
  • a senior or anyone with reduced mobility
  • a light sleeper sensitive to aircraft, jet skis or building work
  • hunting for a bargain, or travelling with a pet

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Staff and named hosts praised in about 120 reviews (122 positive against 15 negative)
  • Sunrise and sunset sea views from private infinity pool villas and a 36 m main pool
  • Strong breakfast, spa and free wellness and farm activities

Cons

  • Small gravelly beach, litter reports and 2025 adjacent construction
  • Aircraft, jet ski and construction noise in about 20 reviews; many stairs
  • Wear after the 2015 refurbishment, plus high dinner and drink prices

What are the alternatives?

  • Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui: 60 private pool villas on Laem Yai Bay, scored 8.3 in the file. Privacy and service are equally strong, but the beach is also rocky and tidal, and rates start near 36,500 THB (~1,043 USD).
  • Banyan Tree Samui: 88 huge pool villas on a private bay, scored 7.8. Staff are praised as warmly, rates start near 18,600 THB (~531 USD), but the bay is stony with dead reef and the hillside needs buggies too.

FAQ

Is the beach at Six Senses Samui good for swimming?

Not by the file’s evidence. The sand is small, gravelly and shallow, and 27 of 36 beach mentions are negative, citing litter, plastic, jet skis and the 2025 construction restriction. The pools are the better place to swim.

How far is Six Senses Samui from the airport?

About 15 minutes by road. The hotel arranges airport pickup, and some guests report delays or mishaps. The shuttle to Fisherman’s Village and the mall is paid, per guest reports.

Is Six Senses Samui suitable for kids?

It is family friendly and children stay free, and families with babies report feeling looked after. No kids club is confirmed by guests, and the stairs and steep paths are hard with strollers. Kids score 7.0 in the file.

Is Six Senses Samui accessible for reduced mobility?

Poorly. Access scores 3.5. Buggies are on call, but guests report 70 or more steps to the oceanfront villas and stairs throughout.

Is the resort certified as sustainable?

No Green Globe, EarthCheck or GSTC certificate was found. Guests do confirm the plastic ban, refill stations, farm and composting, and the file scores sustainability 8.0. Beach litter undercuts the eco image for some guests.

What do the review platforms say?

Tripadvisor 4.5 out of 5 from 1,249 reviews (Tripadvisor page), and HolidayCheck 5.5 out of 6 from 64 reviews (HolidayCheck page). Both are higher than the Samui69 score because that score weights beach, condition, access and value, where the complaints gather.
