Verdict: Hansar Samui scores 7.6 out of 10

Hansar Samui Resort & Spa scores 7.6 out of 10 in the Samui69 file. It is a 74-room, 5-star beachfront resort at the start of Fisherman’s Village in Bophut, and it suits couples, food lovers and anyone who rates service and a good massage above polish. It is a poor match for guests with reduced mobility (no lift, accessibility 4.3), families wanting a kids club, and swimmers who want fine sand. Rooms started around 6,000 THB (~171 USD) a night in the sources checked on 1 October 2026.

Method: 168 guest reviews read one by one, mainly on Tripadvisor and HolidayCheck, about 35% from the last 18 months. Booking.com and Google gave aggregate scores and snippets only, because their pages are closed to readers. Checked 1 October 2026. Every judgement below is what guests report or what the file shows.

What does the brochure say?

The resort opened in 2010 on the Bophut waterfront, a two-minute walk from the shops and night market of Fisherman’s Village. Published figures give 74 rooms of roughly 50 to 75 sq m with large balconies and daybeds, a 15 x 30 m infinity pool facing the sea, H Bistro (French Mediterranean and Thai), a pool and beach bar, the Hansar Thai Wellness Spa, a fitness centre, free kayaks and paddleboards, and a Thai cooking class. The design is low-rise terracotta and timber around the pool and the sea, rather than a tower or a villa estate, and the hotel describes every room as sea-facing. Some listings say the rooms were renovated in 2024. No guest or hotel source in the file confirms it, so the score treats the hotel as a 2010 building.

Pets are not allowed and parking is free on site. The hotel is a three-floor low-rise with no lift. The brand also runs Hansar Bangkok, a different hotel with different reviews; none of the figures here come from it.

What do guests actually report?

Platform scores sit high. Tripadvisor shows 4.7 out of 5 from 3,193 reviews, with location at 4.8 and value at 4.4, the lowest subscore. HolidayCheck shows 5.4 out of 6 from 128 reviews: 86 rated it excellent, 6 poor or worse, and 96% recommend the hotel. Booking.com shows 9.2 out of 10 from 967 reviews (location 9.6, value 8.8) and Google 4.6 out of 5 from 1,448.

The 168-review sample gives a lower and more detailed picture:

Category Mentions (+ / -) Score
Staff and service 120 / 10 9.3
Location and access 75 / 2 9.2
Pool 65 / 15 8.5
Breakfast 80 / 18 8.4
Condition and age 8 / 18 6.6
Accessibility 1 / 7 4.3

Staff praise is the loudest signal: about 12 guests name a team member (Kwan, Dear, Boo and Ford come up most), and problems are reported as fixed quickly, with an app for room service. Location is the second strength, with 75 positive mentions against 2 negative. The weak spots are physical. Condition has 8 positive and 18 negative mentions, and accessibility is the lowest score in the file. That gap between service and building is why the overall figure lands at 7.6 and not above 9.

What are the rooms like?

Rooms score 8.0, with 50 positive and 20 negative mentions. The price file shows entry rooms near 6,000 THB (~171 USD) and upper rates near 9,500 THB (~271 USD), approximate figures from search snippets and a hotel package, so check the live rate for your dates. Guests like the size, the big balconies and the daybeds, and sea views score 8.8 because almost every room faces the water. The negatives repeat: dark interiors, little storage and some dated details. Ground-floor rooms see less of the sea.

Beds score 7.4 (14 positive, 12 negative). The complaints are a low wooden frame that catches ankles, soft mattresses, and air-conditioning or pipe noise. Bathrooms score 7.3: huge showers are praised, while glass walls give no privacy and some guests report drainage problems, worn tiling and low light.

Cleanliness scores 8.0 (40 positive, 12 negative). Daily housekeeping and evening turndown are praised, but about 9 guests mention a musty smell, mould spots or stained items. Condition is the lowest physical score at 6.6: guests cite peeling varnish, rust, damp and an old gym. A renovation in 2024 would be a reason to re-score; the file has no evidence for it.

How good are the pool and the beach?

The pool is the headline. A 15 x 30 m infinity pool faces the sea and scores 8.5 (65 positive, 15 negative). The complaints are predictable: about 10 guests report loungers reserved with towels from 7 am, some mention children in the shared pool, and one reports cloudy water once.

The beach scores 7.0 (25 positive, 12 negative). Access is direct, and kayaks and paddleboards are free, but about 12 guests mention coarse sand with stones, dark water and few beach beds. Bophut is a working bay rather than a postcard stretch; the Bophut beach guide covers the water and the seasons in more detail.

Location scores 9.2. Guests walk to restaurants, the market and massage shops in minutes, and the Bophut Fisherman’s Village guide explains the Friday walking street that starts at the gate. For transfers see how to get to Koh Samui and getting around.

What are the food, drinks and spa like?

Breakfast is the best food story: 80 positive and 18 negative mentions, score 8.4. Guests praise the buffet with made-to-order eggs and noodles and the sea view; a few want fresh juice and more variety, and some mention noise. H Bistro and beach dining score 7.7. The cooking class and beach dinners are liked, while some guests call prices high and one reports a frozen fish dish.

The pool and beach bar scores 8.0 (18 positive, 3 negative), with good cocktails and one complaint about weak drinks in plastic cups. The spa is the standout: 16 positive mentions and none negative, with several guests calling the massage the best on the island or better than shops outside. That sample is small, so treat the 9.0 as strong but not proven at scale. The gym is split at 5.8: six guests call it old, small and dim, six say it is fine with treadmills. Wellness scores 7.2 with free kayaks, paddleboards, a cooking class and some yoga. One guest says morning yoga is free, another says it was not offered, so ask before counting on it.

Where does Hansar Samui fall short?

Wear and damp. About 18 reviews mention tired areas, peeling paint, rust or mould spots, against 8 positive mentions of condition. A hotel that opened in 2010 and is priced as a 5-star draws this comparison.

Access. One positive mention against 7 negative. There is no lift and rooms sit on three floors, and guests note the deep edge of the pool. Flat ground-floor access is the only option for reduced mobility.

Canopy-bed room with sitting area

Noise. Quiet scores 7.6 (15 positive, 8 negative). Several 2025 guests cite slammed doors, scooters, construction and beach music or jet skis. It is a village-edge hotel, not a secluded one.

Value and extras. Value scores 7.6. Tripadvisor value (4.4) is the weakest of its subscores, and guests call restaurants and minibar water pricey. The rooms themselves are seen as fair for a beachfront 5-star.

Sustainability. No certification or visible programme turned up at property or brand level, and no guest confirms one, so it scores 3.5.

Who should book, and who should not?

Book it if you are:

  • a couple after a romantic, walkable base, since guests mention anniversary touches and turndown
  • a guest who values named, attentive staff above design
  • a massage fan, given 16 positive spa mentions and none negative
  • someone who wants Fisherman’s Village dinners a short walk away

Skip it if you are:

  • travelling with limited mobility, because there is no lift
  • a family wanting a kids club, since none turned up in the file
  • a swimmer who wants fine, clear beach water
  • sensitive to damp smells or tired finishes
  • travelling with a pet

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Staff praised in about 120 reviews, with named staff and fast fixes
  • Huge sea-front infinity pool, a well-rated spa and sea-view rooms with big balconies
  • Beachfront at Fisherman’s Village: walk to restaurants and the market

Cons

  • Wear and damp: musty smell, mould spots, peeling paint in about 18 reviews
  • No lift, rooms on three floors, limited storage and dark rooms
  • Loungers reserved by towel from early morning; coarse sand and murky water

What are the alternatives?

  • Anantara Bophut Koh Samui: also in Bophut, a 106-room resort with its own beach and gardens, rated 7.8 in the file. Kids club and free classes are a better match for families, but guests report loud afternoon pools and no lift, and rooms start around 7,400 THB (~211 USD).
  • Melia Koh Samui: a 200-room family resort on Choeng Mon beach, rated 7.3. It has a lagoon pool with a lazy river and slides, but the file shows noise and pricey extras, and it is a taxi ride from Fisherman’s Village.
