Samui speedboat guide: shared seats from about 350 THB, private boats on request, how they compare with catamarans, plus safety and rough-sea months.

Is a Speedboat Faster Than the Ferry From Samui?

Only slightly. A speedboat from Koh Samui to Koh Phangan takes about 25-45 minutes, against 30-45 for the high-speed catamaran. Its real advantages are a timed departure and, on a private boat, your own pier and schedule. Shared seats start around 350 THB (~10 USD); for a private boat, quotes vary widely by boat size and season; ask for a written quote. Prices checked 2026-10-01.

Key takeaways

  • Scheduled speedboat seats (Phangan, Tao) cost about 250-850 THB (~7-24 USD); the catamaran is almost as fast and steadier.
  • Private speedboat transfers to Phangan: quotes vary widely by boat size and season; ask for a written quote. They pay off for groups.
  • Small boats are cancelled first in rough seas. Nov-Dec, the northeast monsoon, is the risk window.
  • Check the life jackets, the licence and the passenger count before you board.
Option Time to Phangan Price Comfort
Scheduled speedboat 30-45 min 250-350 THB per person bumpy in chop
Private charter 25-45 min quote on request you choose the boat
Catamaran 30-45 min 250-355 THB per person steady, air-conditioned
Car ferry 60-75 min about 130 THB per person steadiest, carries vehicles

Scheduled Speedboat: What Runs and What Does It Cost?

Scheduled speedboats are seats on a fixed departure sold through agents and aggregators. Samui to Phangan listings run from about 199-350 THB (~5.50-10 USD) for Lomprayah; to Koh Tao, shared speedboats list at about 700-850 THB (~20-24 USD), 1.5 hours (Southeast Asia Simplified and siamtickets, 2026).

Lomprayah runs a speedboat on some Maenam to Koh Tao sailings around mid-afternoon at about 700 THB. A Lomprayah speedboat also links Tapee Pier in Surat Thani to Maenam in about 1h30 for 700 THB, per our Surat Thani guide. Route detail lives on the Phangan ferry page and the Koh Tao page. Only one scheduled boat lands directly at Haad Rin; see the Phangan page.

Private Speedboat Charter: How Much Does It Cost?

For a private speedboat to Koh Phangan, quotes vary widely by boat size and season; ask for a written quote. Longer charters cost more: our boat charter guide lists half-day boats from about 14,000 THB (~400 USD) and full days of 27,000-45,000 THB (~771-1,286 USD) for 12-20 guests.

No source gives a standard hourly rate; operators quote per trip or per day. Always ask what the quote includes: fuel, crew, park fees, snorkel gear, drinks and hotel pickup differ. Most leave from Bophut or Bang Rak. One local operator is profiled on Samui Boat Charter, without prices because it publishes none.

Catamaran: Is It the Comfortable Choice?

Yes, for most people. Lomprayah (Maenam) and Seatran Discovery (Bang Rak) catamarans reach Thong Sala in about 30-45 minutes for roughly 250-355 THB (~7-10 USD), about 3 sailings a day each (ferries.json and operator listings, October 2026). They are air-conditioned with assigned seats and ride rougher water better than a small speedboat.

Pick the catamaran when you travel alone or as a couple and the timetable fits. Add a speedboat only for a tight connection. Compare operators on Samui ferry companies and piers on Samui ferry piers.

Car Ferry: When Does the Slow Boat Win?

The Raja car ferry from Lipa Noi takes about 60-75 minutes for roughly 130 THB (~3.50 USD) per passenger, the cheapest crossing and the only one that carries scooters and cars. It also has the biggest hull, so it is the best pick if you get seasick or travel with a bike. The Samui to Phangan fare is unverified against Raja’s own page (October 2026 listings).

See the Phangan ferry guide for vehicle rules, and scooter rental for whether your shop allows the crossing.

Is a Speedboat Safe? A Checklist

A licensed speedboat is a normal, regulated way to cross, but small boats carry more risk in chop. Thai port officials check operator licences and passenger limits, and passengers must wear life jackets (TAT Newsroom, marine safety measures, 2016). Check these before paying or boarding:

  • A life jacket for every passenger, in your size, including children.
  • A licensed operator: ask for the TAT or Marine Department licence, and be wary of unmarked pier touts.
  • A passenger count within the boat’s limit. Refuse an overloaded boat.
  • A written quote with route, pier, return time and cancellation terms.
  • A weather call: if the captain declines to sail, accept it.

Which Months Are Roughest for Speedboats?

November and early December are the roughest on the Gulf coast, when the northeast monsoon brings wind, rain and chop around Samui, Phangan and Tao. Conditions usually improve from mid-December and are calmer from January to February (travel-source reports of the Gulf monsoon pattern, 2026). Sources differ on exact weeks, so check the day.

Speedboats and small ferries are cancelled first; the larger catamarans and car ferry keep running longer. Build a spare day before any flight. See rainy season for the full calendar.

Do Speedboats Run for the Full Moon Party?

Yes. On party nights, independent speedboats add to the extra late ferry sailings from Samui to Haad Rin, and boats return through the night. No dependable price list exists, since fares are set per party, so none is quoted here. Expect crowded piers, higher night fares and overloaded boats: apply the safety checklist above. Dates and plans are in Full Moon Party from Samui.

FAQ

How long is the speedboat from Koh Samui to Koh Phangan?

A speedboat takes about 25-45 minutes depending on the pier and the sea state. The scheduled catamaran takes 30-45 minutes, so a speedboat saves little time. The real gain is a departure that fits your flight or a private pier of your choice.

How much does a private speedboat from Koh Samui cost?

For a transfer to Koh Phangan, quotes vary widely by boat size and season; ask for a written quote. Full-day charters are listed at roughly 27,000-45,000 THB (~771-1,286 USD). Prices depend on boat, season and what is included.

Is a speedboat or a ferry better for seasickness?

The ferry. The Raja car ferry and the large catamarans move less than a small speedboat in chop. If you take a speedboat, sit low and central, and take motion-sickness tablets 30-60 minutes before boarding.

Are speedboats cancelled in bad weather?

Yes, small boats are cancelled first. Captains and port officials decide, and the northeast monsoon in November and December causes most cancellations. Check the morning of travel and keep a buffer day before a flight.

Checklist

Before you go

Three things worth checking for this journey, each with the guide that covers it.

  1. Watch the sea in the wet months

The northeast monsoon, October to December, brings the roughest water, worst on the east coast. Small boats are cancelled first, ferries run late. Keep a spare day.

    Sea conditions by month
  2. Know the last boat

Boats stop by early evening and some leave only in the morning. A late flight or bus can leave you on the mainland overnight.

    Ferry companies
  3. Book ahead for peak dates

Seats rarely sell out outside Christmas, New Year and Songkran, but the cheap fares go first. Book flights and peak-season boats well ahead.
