Loy Krathong 2025 (toned down for royal mourning)
Note
About this event
Loy Krathong 2025 fell on 5 November, the night when Thai people float small offerings on water, and it went ahead in a reduced form. The festival was not cancelled. The government asked people to keep the tradition while paying tribute to the late Queen Mother Sirikit, so music and displays were scaled back. A Thai travel blog named the Wat Pai Laem pond as one of the places on Koh Samui to celebrate.
Reports from Phuket show what the adjusted format meant on the ground: no live music, stage shows, contests or fireworks in official event zones, a moment of silence, and a request to wear black and white. The sources give no Samui-specific programme, so read those rules as the national pattern, not as a confirmed Samui schedule. For any later Loy Krathong evening, check the local district announcements a few days ahead, because the format can change from year to year.

Festivals and culture on Koh Samui
Samui's cultural calendar follows the Thai lunar and Buddhist year. Songkran, on 13 to 15 April, is a water fight on the east coast, in Chaweng and Lamai, while west-coast villages keep a calmer, temple-centred version with blessings and merit-making. Loy Krathong falls on the November full moon, when people float small baskets on lakes and ponds. Chinese New Year brings feasting and temple visits. The Samui Festival has held a parade ending at Pru Chaweng Park. Expect restricted alcohol sales on holy days, and check dates a few weeks ahead.
