Xterra Thailand test event on Koh Samui (September 2016)

The test event for the first Xterra off-road triathlon in Thailand was held on 25 September 2016 on Koh Samui, presented by AMA Events.

About this event

Xterra is a brand of off-road triathlon, and this September 2016 race on Koh Samui was the test event for the first Xterra race in Thailand. AMA Events presented it. Before race day the organisers ran mountain bike workshops in Bangkok and posted training tips on the official Xterra Facebook page, to give first-time off-road racers some preparation.

The test mattered because of what Xterra membership brings. A full Xterra World Tour race hands out points toward the Xterra Asia-Pacific Tour and qualifying places for Xterra Worlds, and Thailand had not yet held such a race. Entrants could race alone or as a team, and the programme mixed triathlon, trail running and duathlon formats instead of a single race. Reports from the time frame it as a first step toward a race series. Read this page as a record of a preview event, not of a world-tour round.

The facts

  1. Options included a sprint (750 m swim, 16 km bike, 6 km run) and a full distance (1.5 km swim, 30 km bike, 10 km run), plus 13 and 32 km trail runs and an off-road duathlon.
  2. Organisers said Xterra Thailand was expected to join the Xterra World Tour from 2017.

Why it matters

Sport on Koh Samui

Sport on Samui means three things. Muay Thai fights run most nights in Chaweng: Samui International Stadium on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday, Phetchbuncha on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday, with six bouts from about 21:00. The Samui Regatta, the island's longest-running sporting event, brings sailing fleets to Chaweng in late May. Running events add a half marathon starting in Chaweng, which has been held in June, and the Samui Trail in November, with distances from 7 to 55 km starting in Na Mueang. Start times are early, to beat the heat.
