About this event
The 21st Samui Regatta was held at Chaweng Beach with Nora Beach Resort and Spa as the host. The regatta was founded in 2002 and describes itself as the only multi-class sailing competition in the Gulf of Thailand, part of the Asian yacht circuit. Edition numbers show that the run was not unbroken: the 18th was in 2019 and the 21st in 2024.
Synergy Samui Resort hosted in 2019, and by 2024 the host was Nora Beach Resort and Spa, which also hosted the 22nd regatta in 2025. Regattas Asia organises the event with the Samui Yacht Club Regatta and the Yacht Racing Association of Thailand. Fah Thai magazine published a visitor's overview and Mysailing the results. The regatta keeps its slot at the end of May and the start of June on the island's sporting calendar.
The facts
- 1 Hong Kong's Zannekin, a Ker 46 skippered by Marcel Liedts, won overall after five days of racing.
- 2 The A35 Iolanthe 3 (Terry Foster) finished second and Sam Chan's Freefire third.
Why it matters
A Hong Kong-sailed boat won the 21st edition, part of the regatta's recovery after COVID-19.
Muay Thai and sport on Koh Samui
Sport on Samui means three things. Muay Thai fights run most nights in Chaweng: Samui International Stadium on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday, Phetchbuncha on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday, with six bouts from about 21:00. The Samui Regatta, the island's longest-running sporting event, brings sailing fleets to Chaweng in late May. Running events add a half marathon starting in Chaweng, which has been held in June, and the Samui Trail in November, with distances from 7 to 55 km starting in Na Mueang. Start times are early, to beat the heat.
Around Chaweng
Chaweng is the main resort town on Samui's east coast, with the longest beach on the island, roughly 7 km of sand. Soi Green Mango, just back from the beach, is the nightlife alley, and Central Festival Samui sits between the beach road and Chaweng Lake. Chaweng Beach Road is one-way northbound and slows to a crawl between 17:00 and 20:00 with taxis, scooters and pedestrians. Most club nights, pool parties and Muay Thai bouts are here, and Pru Chaweng Park hosts public festivals and races.
