About this event

Fisherman's Village is the old centre of Bophut on the north coast of Koh Samui, and its walking street is held every Friday from 17:00 to 23:00. It also runs in smaller form on Monday and Wednesday. The original wooden shophouses were built by Chinese immigrants as far back as the 19th century, when the village was a fishing community.

The fishermen have moved on, but the old buildings remain, with narrow alleys between them, and many now house boutiques, cafes, restaurants and bars. On Friday the market stretches along the whole village, with street food, handmade goods, live music and street performers. Friday is the biggest of the three nights, and guides rate the shopping, such as local fabrics, jewellery and independent fashion, as better than at most island markets. Pick Monday or Wednesday if you prefer a quieter walk.

Markets on Koh Samui

Samui's night markets rotate through the week. Fisherman's Village in Bophut closes its main street on Fridays, the biggest night, with smaller editions on Monday and Wednesday. Maenam holds a short walking street on Thursdays from about 17:00, where parking is easiest before 18:00. Lamai closes Beach Road on Sunday afternoons until about 22:00. Chaweng has a night market most evenings, and Nathon's market near the pier starts around 16:00 and is mostly local. Go hungry: grilled seafood, corn and noodles are the standard stalls, and clothes and souvenirs fill the rest.

Around Bophut

Bophut is on Samui's north coast, and its Fisherman's Village is the old Chinese-Thai fishing settlement, a single street of wooden shophouses beside the beach. Evenings here are about sunset dinners, beach lounges and live music at places such as Coco Tam's, with Koh Phangan visible on the horizon. On Fridays the street closes to traffic for the island's biggest walking street, with smaller editions on Monday and Wednesday. Resorts along the bay run festive dinners and holiday markets in December.
